Testing Cold Smoke Generator from ProQ - Pitmaster X

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I bought the cold smoke generator from proQ, because I wanted to do some cold smoking.
Buy your CSG on amazon -- amzn.to/1sJVbYS
I like the proQ cold smoke generator, but there are a few design faults.
The main design fault is the thealight, it's a danger to your grill and it should not be a part of the design. The candle wax can do damage to your grill. - Pitmaster X

Thanks for the feedback jeffhrose, Glad you like the info, that I try to bring across. I find that my english speach is not good enough to narrate, so I do add some descriptive text and I try and support the videos with music. Of coarse the choise of music is always hard and no music at all I think is no option. Have you watched my latest videos? Do you think they work better?

I agree, ofcoarse CSG was not designed for this purpose. To me it was just a test to see if it would work. I still love using this device, to cold smoke salmon. Perhaps I will shoot a video for it in the neir future. Thanks for your comment.

I LOVE this gadget. I bought one about a year ago so I could start making my own bacon and that's gone on to using it for guanciale, cured sausage and various cheeses. You know you can just leave the tealight where it is, it doesn't do it any harm ;)

Good vid - I still have to try saw dust in the A-Maze-N-Pellet-Smoker looks like it burns slower than pellets. What kind of wood was in the saw dust ?

I see a problem that you pointed out with the tea light candle. Looking at the smoker tray where the candle goes the left side is bent in and should be straightened to allow the candle to slide in and out with easy. If you do this it should work better. you can also design a small cup with a handle to hold the candle for easy handling. Just a though of what I have seen.

Yes wood dust burns slower than pellets, but it also produces les smoke. I used oak wood dust

Nice review! I have the competitor's 6" maze that uses dust and it works well. I also have their tube smoker that uses pellets. The tube smoker works really well for smoke but it raises the temp in the kettle a bit too much for cheese. I think I am going to get their maze that does use pellets for the perfect cheese smoking setup! I love smoked cheese too!

I've cold smoked so much bacon using my ProQ. Awesome results every single time, as long as you use the right sized sawdust, and you pack it properly. If the dust is too coarse, it will keep going out. If it's too full, you get crossover between the channels, and it burns out too quickly.

I got one for Christmas. Unlike in your video, my tealight slides in and out very easily, no screw required. Perhaps the tray the candle sits on is not very precisely made. Why not save old tealights that have little wax left - only needs to burn for a minute, and there's less chance of spilling any wax.

I've noticed there seem to be 2 sizes of tea lights these days. The original shorter size and a slightly larger one. In another video of a similar gadget, the candle slid out easily. (They just blew it out and pulled it with their fingers.) But thanks to PX for the detailed visual. I worry when it's shortened that I'm going to do something bone-headed that the demonstrator obviously didn't believe anyone would be stupid enough to do.

Sean Somers Sure... 1. Most important that you use sawdust.. it has to be dust. 2. Make sure the dust is dry If your dust is too coarse it will die. You could grind it down in a coffee grinder Hope this will solve your problem PMX

I'd say from looking at the smoker (compared to other stock photos and videos on here) that the tray the tea light fits into on yours is slightly mishapen which is why it is such a tight fit. Did you not try bending the metal back straight so the tea light slid in and out easily?

Only issue is you have to jam your candle under where the wood is, because you've not filled the start & just bare mesh is exposed to half the flame. Cover all mesh up to below the edge of the spiral bead, that candle will slip in & out easily

Yeah, what was done here is awkward and doesn't need to be. You can still use a tealight, just do this instead: 1. Get a tiny tin that holds mints. Use the bottom part only. This kind of thing: images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41GYrPMeapL.jpg It's exactly the right size for the tealight and fits perfectly into the opening. No stupid screw. 2. Don't start the ProQ on the grill, start it on a small table next to the grill. When it's smoking well, remove the tin above with your fingers, no screw, no mess. Blow out the candle, and put the cold smoke generator into your grill. Problems solved. But I also like your cool torch and I'm going to buy one. :)

Hi. So I live in South Africa and although in some respects we are up to date in other respects we are far behind. Certainly in terms of gadgets like the cold smoker. I bought one, a spiral, which it seems came from China. I did everything you did and the dratted thing keeps on going out after about 3-5min. I put it in my Weber which had enough airflow and nothing. I then put it in the open and still nothing. I changed from oak barrel sawdust to walnut and still nothing. Is there something I am missing or is our saw dust different from yours? BTW. I even went and bought a sieve and made it into a donut to try and even that didn’t work. Thanks for the vid. Regards Ralph

My ProQ lasted for about 40 smoking sessions before the mesh burned out using Oak, Hickory and Hawthorn dust. Although the ProQ is simple, easy use and does give good results it is way overpriced for what it is. I am currently using the Barbecook spiral cold smoke generator, and so far at 6 sessions in, it is as good as the ProQ with no significant difference in use, but the Barbecook version is so much better priced.
