Tesla towing test: hauling a dead electric car across New Zealand

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Last year we went on a caravan holiday to see if an electric car could tow a caravan. The result was unsurprising: yes, electric cars have more than enough range and power for towing regular loads.
But despite that successful test, when it comes to towing with electric cars, critics on the internet can get quite passionate, and they told us we need to tow more, faster, further, and harder! So... we did!
To finally put the old "EVs can't tow" myth to bed, Gav borrowed an eight year old Tesla Model S, loaded a tonne of weight on the back, then towed it through the night, on the toughest, steepest, windiest roads across the width of New Zealand's North Island.
After witnessing the destruction from worsening climate change-related weather events, and seeing as all the electricity used in this trip was purely Climate Positive, it was the right journey at the right time.
If you're keen on being part of this positive change, come and join us at Ecotricity, which is now New Zealand's only Climate Positive electricity provider! That means by switching today, you're actually turning back the clock on Climate Change, while saving money in the process.
Head to ecotricity.co.nz and chuck in your address to see how much money & carbon you can save right now. It's that easy and it makes a real difference.

Another great video Gavin! I recently I took a road trip in my EV6 LR towing a 4m aluminum boat (aprox 750kgs) from Auckland, around the East Cape and back again. All up it was slightly over 1,100kms. What I found was that the trailer and mountainous terrain reduced my usual ranger by about 30%. Really not that bad! The main niggle that I had, as you rightly pointed out, was having to unhook the trailer in order to plug in at most of the chargers. But that's a small price to pay for a cheap and eco-friendly holiday. Admittedly this is a relatively small boat, but I personally believe that with prevalence of charges and rapid charging speeds of many modern EVs, the old argument that "EVs can't tow" is becoming less and less of an issue.

As someone who’s just been a passenger on a few 8-10 hour days , having a vehicle that will literally tell you to go take some time out to stretch your legs and eat something every few hours while it chargers is hardly a bad thing, for people’s safety and well-being if nothing else. If anything I would even view such enforced stops as a good thing. The only real problem you run into is when the charger is in use and there is no alternative, something more chargers could well and truly fix. Also educating people and having more widespread and integrated alert systems to let even the newbies know when people are waiting even if they don’t have PlugShare.

Hey Gavin, the examples of towing capabilities for e.v's makes for great content. Another hurdle for potential buyers, (that constantly comes up in conversation) is battery degradation. Is there a possibility that you could cover this in an episode? (As well as a MY Performance review) 😬. I constantly refer this channel to people I speak to about e.v's. So your take on this subject would definitely help with bringing more to the lightside. Keep the content coming.

Speaking of climate change, how mad is that petrol station having all of its lighting on in the middle of the night despite being closed? It's not the only business guilty of wasting energy. You see it all over the world, particularly in empty office buildings. Energy efficiency matters when it comes to climate change action.

its only green traveling when charging/driving using green energy. The electricity still need to be made..... And driving around for fun is not eco friendly Ofcourse i like the revieuw but thinking green is just staying at home and charging from home. Even the solar aray had to been produced to give power to the carr so end the end i realy dont now how green we all are. I realy hope evs last 30 years bechose the price of evs is at least 30-40 more expensive. The montly payments if keeping a car for like 4-5 years is around 750-1000$ so how will ppl affard this. The tested car is well over 100.000$ here. great revieuw world is just not ready to go green

Proof of concept, in limited scensrios. I am driving Auckland to SI for 3 weeks doing 3,000 kms. Electric cars are worse for carbon until the car gets to 7 years old. So actually, you are making the environment worse by buying a new electric car! Oh the irony. Make sure you don't buy anything imported, or export any goods, est meat, etc. Such a sad life!

It is not an "echo chamber" if the opposing views are damaging lies with naught to evidence the falsehoods of which you repeat.
