Tesla Terafactory Texas Update

Hello and welcome back everyone, it’s Randy! In today’s footage we see the latest updates with the major road construction in the southwest corner and also happening in various areas around the exterior of the site. As always, there are updates to other areas of interest we’ll see as it looks like things are moving along just fine.
Here are today’s key takeaways:
- The north end shows the progress on the possible new lot at the far north of the factory and we can see that aggregate mix has already started to be applied to the area. The northern gap shows lots of activity happening on the ground-level beneath the space frame and also lots of activity on each of the different levels of the BCP we see later that’s out of frame.
- The GigaPress area shows concrete has been poured beneath the corridor we last saw formed and prepped with rebar. We also see a new angled steel cross beam between the concrete columns on the north end. Concrete has also been poured in the areas around the recently poured foundations and expansion joints have been cut as well. On the left of the image, we can see that concrete has been poured for the grade beam and the next section of it is being set up with rebar as it extends across the entire angled corner.
- East of of GigaPress area across the road, we can see work in progress to lay some new gas lines that currently extend from where we see in the image all the way up to HGR.
- The east side of the BIW section shows an active concrete pour to one of the large formed sections just north of where the loading bays are on this side. Up on the roof, it looks like the stairwell access structure has now been wrapped with a poly sheeting tarp possibly until the remaining frame work is completed while we deal with recent and more storms in the forecast.
- The former robot storage area is now having temporary parking space bumper blocks placed so this area can be used for parking pretty soon.
- The southern gap shows the center row footings on the south end are in the process of having forms and rebar installed and we can see that many excavations have taken place along the west side of the gap directly on columns of the structure on that side for future footings. On the north end, we see that some interesting pieces of steel are on the ground in this area, in addition to metal wall studs being installed to close off this section from the section to the north of it.
- In the southeast corner, we can see new activity where we have many sections of reinforced concrete pipe positioned next to an excavator, so we may start seeing some work starting here to handle sewage or more drainage in general.
- The southwest corner near the bridge shows the curved section has now been paved and now the road coming from the west successfully connects to the road on the west side of the factory. We can also see a new portion of road has been formed and is almost ready for concrete. Major progress has been made with the installation of the wall panels on the angled corner as they look to have the vast majority of them installed. It’s quite possible there are a few remaining on the ground-level where we see them missing, but also there could be large rollup doors here as well, so we’ll keep an eye on it.
- Lastly, we look at the rest of the west side and see major progress with installing the bottom row of windows as well as the taller top row of windows now that installation has resumed for both.

@ 2:49 NEW INFORMATION: (Upper right) Stormwater pipes and river outlets..... Credit goes to Bob Callahan for bringing information in the new site plans to my attention... This is where a massive new "Splitter box" 37' x 69' will be constructed. To manage and divert some stormwater to a new south pond. It will work something like this... 1) All three main stormwater pipes... Eastside, central, and westside will converge near the road where the river outlet pipes are. 2) A fourth pipe will collect water from the road embankment and converge were river outlet pipes are. 3) At that convergence point a massive splitter box will divert water through two new 8' diameter pipes to a new south pond under normal conditions. But... In an extreme down pour, or extended heavy rain... The new pond fills and water flows straight through splitter box to the river outlets. The existing north pond will be filled in.

As part of this project there will also be an outlet structure constructed at the river. It will have energy dissipaters to break up the water flow as it goes into the river.

You could hide three different mini factories inside the main building and mange shift changes, entrances etc. in such a way that nobody but the people working in each one even knew it was there. Navigating around inside there when its finished is going to be a significant challenge.

There *are* going to be (at least) 3 different factories within the main structure. The Cybertruck assembly, Model Y body shop, and Model Y assembly. People living near a lot of auto factories (grew up Metro Detroit; UAW family) knows a body shop is a different factory than an assembly plant. You are correct about interior navigation being insane. But it's not likely to be necessary by anyone other than executives and tour groups; each factory will be self-contained.

I think you are right. I am also curious about the stormwater system for the east parking lots. The new site plan covers the stormwater system for the main building and surrounding roads in great detail, but shows nothing about the parking lots to the east. So we are left to guess... Is the current pond temporary? Will there be a new pond located closer to the river? What about river outlets? There has to be a way of dealing with overflow.

I've been getting there later due to coaching my kids flag football teams and fitting practices in, so if I'm able to make it over to the site after practice, it's much later and most of the outside updates have been done for the day, unless it is concrete being poured or asphalt being paved. I'm still working out the kinks in my new schedule, but it should only be off from my norm until maybe the first week of November when the season ends.

I wonder if the irony of seeing all those gas lines going into the plant will engage the minds of the "end fossil fuels" crowd?

  • @daveachuk

    @daveachuk

    2 жыл бұрын

Yes, an interesting point. Fossil fuels are actually an amazing resource, but they are limited in supply, and should only be used only where it makes sense. Burning them in an ICE where only 25% of their energy is being used for useful work is an example of a bad use (or as little as 10% efficiency if you take into account the energy that goes into collecting, refining and transporting those fuels from oil field to gas pump). But, using fossil fuels for thermal industrial processes (eg melting ingots for casting) is actually much better than using it to generate electricity: a natural gas power plant is between 40-50% efficient in converting fuel to electricity, plus you have grid losses. But you can get close to 100% efficient with converting fuel to heat (though there is definitely still some of that heat that doesn't do useful work). Given the electricity mix of the Texas grid (46% natural gas, 17% coal, the rest is low-carbon wind/nuclear/solar) it's entirely possible that natural gas -> heat is better than grid electricity -> heat in terms of net CO2. Of course if that grid went to a high percentage of renewables, or Tesla generated its own electricity on-site, then it'd be more CO2-friendly to use electric heating for thermal processes, but for now, surprisingly, Tesla may be making the most environmentally-sound choice by using natural gas for heat. One of the big talking points against EVs is the higher CO2 needed for manufacture (in reality, this is usually made up for by less burned fuel within a few months of driving). Tesla in its environmental reports have made a point of the effort they are going through to try to reduce that so that the up-front/embodied CO2 emissions of their cars are similar to a conventional ICE car, so I suspect they keep track of all these CO2 outputs and have done the math on this. Also it seems like it would be cheaper to just increase the capacity of the electrical switchyard they're putting in anyway to allow for electrical heating, rather than installing a new natural gas pipeline, so I think if using the grid electricity were better for net CO2 they'd probably be taking that option.

The real issue here is how much CO2 IN TOTAL is required to build and maintain this plant plus produce this product compared to an ICE plant. This includes emissions from the life cycle of the cars themselves. My Tesla Weekend has done some calculations that suggest the break-even point for CO2 emissions is a matter of DAYS of production (not weeks, months, or years) It's really invalid to pick on a small part of production and claim that as a negative when they are light years ahead when considering the whole issue.
