It is an interesting situation: I feel like it will be incredibly challenging for the AI to make sense of the huge variety of snowy road conditions with covered lane lines, curbs, and road signs, hidden hazards, and poor image contrast, and yet.... if the car begins to slide while driving, the AI probably has a much better chance of regaining control quickly compared to any human. A person is probably much better at situational prediction in these conditions than the AI, and yet the AI would be far superior in traction control, capable of making hundreds of micro adjustments to the steering, acceleration, and breaking to keep the car from sliding. I'm looking forward to seeing lots of videos of FSD in the snow.

Indeed. Snow driving is so much different from regular driving, it feels like it would need completely new programming to handle it. For now, I think it would be good if it could recognize the snow, and disable itself for safety.

That’s why existing driving aids exist, the human does the part they are good and the car does its parts. The hard part is incrementally improving systems, normal people don’t read release notes. It almost has to do nothing until it can do everything from a mainstream perspective

i live in northeast and the variability is completely chaotic. Depending on who plowed the specific road, age of the road, potholes and weather conditions, some times it's only 1 lane in side streets and even main roads can go from 4 lanes (2 each direction) down to 2 lanes.

I cant wait until it comes to Norway. It will get needed data to handle weather we have. I see drivers almost on daily basis that should be on autopilot for everyones safety. That said, I'm sure full auto will not be available on the very narrow or challenging roads to begin with.

@@BertVanMullem Even the best winter tires for the condition doesn't have nearly the same grip as summer tires on dry roads. But it's still vastly better than summer tires on snow or ice. At 40kph/25mph stopping distance for a Model S85 on icy road is ~105m/345ft with summer tires, ~45m/148ft with studless winter tires and ~35m/115ft with studded. On summer tires dry roads, it'd break at ~7.5m/25ft. The difference should be obvious from the numbers alone, but on top of that, the distance increases exponentially with speed. Stay safe.

This is my fear regarding the robotaxis. They are so very far away from being able to operate in FSD with no driver inputs. I have a Tesla and I'm a total fan boy as well, I live in Canada on the prairies, but I drive in a lot of shit every winter that I'm not convinced FSD could handle with no driver inputs. U think in a foot of snow an FSD car is going to figure out how to rock itself out of a parking spot that is snowed in. Just this spring there was a bad snow storm the streets were covered in slush and parking was a nightmare. I saw someone having trouble so I stopped and gave them room to back up and get a run at it so they could get out. How does that interaction go with a robotaxi. Also I live on 22kms of grid road that gets nasty when it rains I don't see a robotaxi coming to get me any time soon.

Nice overview of FSD beta handing in snow! It's encouraging the car can make out the path of roads in plowed snow. However, it's pretty clear from watching this and other videos that as of beta 8, the car doesn't have much if any situational awareness as it doesn't know it's driving in snow, etc. or other adverse conditions to know it has to slow down. Getting out of that parking lot would be challenge in dry conditions. Handling parking lots and other unmapped areas is going to be a big challenge for FSD once the team starts to tackle them which is probably at least several releases away. Thus far, all the improvements in FSD beta's seem to be for typical street driving in good conditions with better handling for various intersections with each release.

Snow, ice, and slush come with dangerous very abilities, especially for a full self driving. For example, would it understand what a snow mound is and what to do in that situation? There’s a whole lot of shape to snow, also how does it recognize ice, black ice?

When there's a fresh cover of snow in a parking lot I also have a hard time seeing where the "islands" are and where the exit is. I'm thinking Tesla is going to have to look at a map or satellite view to understand a parking lot fully and signal if what the map says and what the car sees doesn't jive- snow or no snow. Personally, I'm impressed that the car can see the designated driving lane on a fully snow covered road. Too bad your S doesn't have an external speaker - you could have "farted" at those people walking in the road.

Very interesting! These are exactly the types of situations that come to my mind when I hear people (including Musk) say that *true* full self driving (level 5 autonomy) is right around the corner. It's not uncommon for roads to look like this, or even worse in small towns in upstate NY... There is no way in hell that we see level 5 autonomy in the next decade, and I wish people were more okay with that fact. Cant imagine how it fast it would rip through my long, rough gravel driveway in a foot of snow if its trying to do 20-30mph in a small parking lot where it clearly can't identify its environment. Look forward to future progress and advancements!

Ideally I would also like to see a worst case, 10 degrees, snow still kind of on the car with some ice on the sensors that kind of thing. Within reason I wouldn't want you to go completely blind and not brush the thing off, although the temptation is strong, someone will do it. Also how well does it do recognizing other cars that are half covered in snow themselves.

If you're a wanted fugitive inside a tesla can the cops force tesla to deliver you to the nearest police station?

I have a 2020 Model S in northern Canada and I have a number of issues to report in snowy conditions with even just enhanced autopilot. I am waiting for FSD to be released here and I would love to be a beta tester. There seems to be no way to report issues to Tesla if you are not a FSD beta tester. I am very happy to see you dping some testing which IS being reported to Tesla. Definately, the software does not seem to take into account snow in any way. My car is fully equipped for snow, but it should really be able to adapt speed to road conditions. It also does lane changes in passing lanes as it does in dry conditions which is too aggressive for snow.

You can hold the setting (car logo) button, it sends a screenshot of the car. Not sure if it can be used for autopilot improvements tho

@@TheKdcool Thanks for the suggestion. At present, I just set up a scenario and intervene on purpose in the hopes the intervention gets logged and put in the massive database of interventions and maybe reviewed at random.

@@TheKdcool Thanks, didn’t know that! That camera reporting button they added for beta testers is redundant then? Plus it is much too small and takes too much of their attention off the road!

@@micheljull the purpose if the camera reporting button really is to report fsd mishaps. The "screenshot button" sends telemetrics and a screenshot of the whole car at that time. I'm not sure it can be used for autopilot training but I do it anyway. After sending the "screenshot" I often tap on voice command, say "bug report" and explain the bug. It says "thank you" but I don't if really is used or I just annoy them 😂

The whole thing about snow tires is way overblown. The key to safe winter driving is to know wtf you're doing. I live in Canada. I've been driving for 58 years. I average 50,000 miles per year in all kinds of weather and all kinds of roads. I tend to drive faster than most people feel comfortable with. I have NEVER owned a set of snow tires. I use "all season radials". In those years, I've been in a winter accident once, where I skidded off a road in 2 feet of snow. No damage. I've only been stuck twice where I needed to call for assistance. That's in 58 years. Drivers and self-driving software developers need to understand that it's perfectly safe to drive in winter conditions without special tires if you're careful and know what you're doing. Obviously, with good winter tires it's even safer but given my experience, in my case it's just not worth the $5-600+ to get the fancy tires.

Since you have the FSD Beta, if an accident does occur while using the FSD beta, are you accountable? Will Tesla cover any % of the damage since you are a tester? Also, on the Autopilot Menu on the screen, does it say, “Full Self Driving Beta”?
