    I just have to say after driving in SF professionally, daily, during and after rush hour, for 4 years a decent percentage of human drivers aren't ready to drive there either. The layout is complex and with constant construction going on resulting in detours, lane closures combined with sporting events and tourist traffic it takes a driving competency a some (many) drivers just don't possess.

    @@markplott4820 I've seen New Deli and with all the bikes and animals it's definitely a challenge it looks like chaos to western eyes but if you watch there is a system in place. The worst place I have ever driven was through Tijuana Mexico in the mid-1970s. There were approximately 7 to 8 traffic lanes unmarked and no direction for traffic vehicles going both directions on both sides of the road with potholes literally large enough to stop a car completely and not be able to get out

    @@danzafrir9193 FSD works amazing well without interventions in areas with well marked lanes and standard roads and road markings. The issue is places like SF that invent their own non standard markings that are seen nowhere else but there, its completely absurd, most new drivers would definitely have issues driving there. If you compare the tesla to a new average driver driving in SF for the first time, other then its edge cases and 'wobbly' driving, id say its better then a human. the wobbly driving is because of the absurd lane lines that the car cant quite figure out right away. This will improve with time. As for the edge cases, those will also improve with time and this test helps find them. its fairly improper to compare any human or a tesla that sees those areas for the first time to a driver that lives there and drives those roads daily, How could they ever compare? By the time they do, teslas will be driving perfectly everywhere else in the USA.

    This video is the perfect backdrop for a question I have that I am not sure if you have addressed in the past or not. We know that humans make driving decisions based not only on what they see vehicles and pedestrians doing, but also based on what drivers do. Specifically hand gestures, flashing high beams or even mouthing words. I can think of numerous occasions when I have reached a 4-way stop or a round-about at the same time as another vehicle and one driver will wave or motion for the other driver to go, even if the first driver had the right of way. I think recognizing these kinds of gestures would be valuable for the FSD software to be able to deal with. Say a Tesla is the second car at a 4-way stop and the first car hand motions or flashes high beams for the Tesla to go. A human driver would recognize this and assume the right of way. A similar situation would be when two vehicles are coming at each other and obstacles will only leave enough room for one vehicle. How can a FSD vehicle communicate with the other car in the absence of a human hand gesture? I think this is just another challenge that can certainly be eventually overcome, but it would seem to me to be one that genuinely has real-world implications. This video was very fascinating and I appreciate the time you took making it.

    it will be an interesting problem to solve for the empty self driving car to communicate with the human driver in the other car. (I know that most of the time there are no communications necessary, but still there are edge cases when the A.I. would need to make its intentions known). Also in traffic jams most of rules are completely disregarded when an emergency vehicle comes, and everybody goes where they can to let it pass. This is a VERY important edge case, but relatively rare too.

    the car has a better view then a human, so if the car cant see it, humans would have no hope of seeing it. The car would inch forward and have a better view then a human. Any situation where the car cant see is a situation where no human could see and would likely result in many accidents, so that situation would likely never exist in the first place.

    @8:31 I'm not sure if the driving laws are the same in California/USA vs. Canada. But where I live, any intersection is always a crosswalk/right-of-way for pedestrians, regardless of whether there's a painted crosswalk or not. So those two pedestrians weren't crossing in the middle of the street and did have right-of-way.

  • @AIDRIVR

    Yeah, but if FSD gave the right of way to every pedestrian standing in the street, it would never be able to drive in SF

    A lot of the time when we encountered pedestrians standing still waiting to cross the road, we hand signal the pedestrians to cross which FSD is lacking. The same goes true when two cars came to a four-way stop at the same time. A lot of human gesturing and face reading are involved to decide who goes first. I don't think FSD can do that. Some form of communication between the driver and FSD needs to be implemented for such cases.

    Or increase driver education: Always yield to the car that arrived first. If you and another driver reach the intersection at the same time, yield if the car is on your right. ... At a four-way stop if two vehicles reach the intersection simultaneously, the vehicle on the left must yield the right-of-way to the vehicle on the right. driversed.com/driving-information/signs-signals-and-markings/right-of-way.aspx#:~:text=Always%20yield%20to%20the%20car,car%20is%20on%20your%20right.&text=At%20a%20four-way%20stop,the%20vehicle%20on%20the%20right.

    I'm really curious with re to what FSD is 'thinking' at 10:06: it renders the truck in an angle, which could make the system think it could pass it in the way it seemed to be going to do. So the actual position of the truck is different from what the system thinks, and i really think it would crash into the truck. Really wondering what the FSD team thinks of it and how they think to resolve this, as to many situations like this at mass roll out of the beta, will seriously hurt Tesla...

  • @nilsfrederking62

    I mean a broken emergency light looking like a turn signal is quite a demanding situation, the only things which could indicate that it might not be a turn signal was that the door on the drivers side was opened and that the frequency of the turn signal was double the usual speed, which is an indicator that the opposite turn signal does not work.

    I know emergency vehicles have a special strobe light built in that flashes at a very specific frequency to control traffic lights. Wonder if they made the tesla recognize that same frequency strobe, letting that firetruck command a stop from autopilot. Or, like you said, it's just a fluke from big, red lights mounted up high on the truck.

    I wonder if the system will learn how to behave based on geographic location. eg how to assume people and other cars will behave while in SFO vs cities in Canada for example.

  • @AIDRIVR

    @AIDRIVR

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yes I think it will definitely behave differently in different areas. The "California Stop" it does through stop signs going ~5mph won't fly in other states. Also there's some cities you can drive safely and get by just fine, but a place like San Francisco requires you to drive aggressively to get around
