The woman in blue, orange dress is Madhubala, the most beautiful and iconic actress of Bollywood to this date. In 1952, she was so much popular that Theatre Arts magazine cited her to be the "biggest star in the world". She even received several offers from Hollywood but her dominating father refused. She is the only actress to give 6 blockbusters (Kala Pani, Howrah Bridge, Phagun, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, Mughal-E-Azam and Barsaat Ki Raat) in just two years!

The production of the movie began in the year 1944 but it took 16 years to get completed. The movie was made in black and white, because that's how movies were made at that time. While shooting of the film was going on, Technicolor arrived in India, and so K. Asif, the director of the film, decided to film a song ("Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya") in colour in order to showcase the beauty of the "Sheesh Mahal" set that had been put up for the film. After filming the song, the director was so impressed with the visuals that he decided to shoot the entire film again, this time in colour, but the producers didn't agree to this, as the film had already consumed a lot of money. So finally the director-producer came to a settlement of filming the climax portion of "Mughal-E-Azam" in colour. This is the reason why this movie is partly in colour. In the year 2004, the entire film was digitally coloured and released in theatres.

They don't care. Half the time is spent in referencing Hollywood films - that can be tolerated because they need some context- but not reading the subs and appreciating the lyrics and watching the nuances in the scene? Either it's beyond them or as I said they don't care to delve deep into it. I have seen one guy who reacts to old Tamil songs even without subs but he is silent mostly and listens ,more appreciative and has even become a fan of legendary Tamil playback singer T.M.S and loved Sivaji Ganesan acting prowess. It's o.k if you don't like something but give some respect when you watch it. Or if you can't bear it just cut short the reaction. Simple. One thing I like is that for me at least korbin is more natural sincere than Rick . But his insistence of mispronouncing Punjab . It makes me cringe everytime and makes me say there he goes again. Well, regardless of skin tone Indians can be light - eyed. It's just not concentrated in one particular region or ethnicity. For example, Aishwarya Rai , who is Indian from southern region is light -eyed. It's all about genetical mutation, which causes some people to have light eyes. Moreover, lightness is recessive gene which is why it is not wide-spread.

Translation: ['Mehfil' has the literal meaning of an assembly, a meeting event, generally referring to a performance of poetry or song and dance. But it can be a metaphor for many things. In this case the meaning of the first line (the refrain) is closer to 'I will put my destiny in your hands' or 'I will try my fortune in your world'] Bahar- I will try my fortune in your world, I will spend a few moments by your side, and I will see how it feels. Anarkali- I will try my fortune in your world, I will bow my head at your feet, and I will see how it feels. Bahar- The spring has brought a message of love today, After ages, the flowers of hope are smiling again I will escape from this heartache and I will see how it feels. Anarkali- If there is no ache in your heart, how can it be a life? if your heart is not bleeding (into your tears), where is the joy in drinking your tears? I will shed a few tears in love and I will see how it feels. [The metaphor of drinking your tears to depict silent suffering, and hiding your pain from others, at unrequited love, is a common one in Urdu poetry] Bahar- (mocking) This is the story of someone in love, nothing more Suffering, sighing in private, and choke to death on one's sorrow Some day, I will have a laugh watching this happen I will try my fortune in your world, and I will see how it feels. Anarkali- I concede that love can ruin one's life Is it not enough that when you die (for love), the whole world remembers you? I will forsake my world in someone's love, I will try my fortune in your world, and I will see how it feels.

Fun fact: this is Madhubala (the one in purple and orange clothing). She is still considered as the most beautiful woman to exist in India. Irl, she had a very fair complexion her skin was translucent. When she used to eat apples or paan (betel leaf), you could see the red going down her throat. And she had the most unusual eyes.. something u might have not seen in ur entire life!! And her smile.... Trust me, people used to wait outside the studios to get one glimpse of tht smile and her face.. Am sure you must've noticed her unusual smile in this video itself. She is woman who never needed makeup, Even if she had to put on makeup for some certain roles, it would just be a eyeliner and a lipstick. Probably for some roles she had to put on heavy makeup. But otherwise she never needed makeup. Actors who have worked with her or have seen her, they describe her as ethereal. Definitely something out of this world!! Her real name was Mumtaz Jehan Begum Dehlavi. The stage name 'madhubala' was given to her because of how sweet and beautiful she was! She was even offered roles in Hollywood as well. But she couldn't accept the offer because of her father. Her father didn't let her go. He was very strict about where she goes, who she's working with. An article published in the US describes madhubala as "The biggest star in the world and she's not in Beverly hills" Even though she couldn't dance, she was casted for the role of a court dancer named anarkali because of how beautiful she was! And even because she was a very talented actress. She could play any role! She literally still ranks #1 in terms of the most beautiful and talented actresses She is born on valentines day the 14th of Feb. That is why she is considered as a symbol of love and beauty. She had a very famous title given to her 'The venus of Indian Cinema'

As great a film Mughal e Azam is, the story of its making is incredible. It took more than 12 long years to make the movie. The production stalled due to Partition as the producers left India for Pakistan. K Asif, the director had to struggle a lot to get the money he required for the film. His persistence and dedication has been an inspiration for many Indian artists. Perhaps that would explain parts of the film being made in colour and parts of it being colorised later.

Thank you Asad - you did the near impossible in conveying the lyrics so well!! Fun fact: in the first line when Bahar sings about the spring - she is referring to ‘Anarkali’ (her opponent played by Madhubala) and herself. Baharein aaj pehghaam-e-mohabbat leke aayi hai - in the first line she is talking about herself, saying that Bahar had brought a message of love. In the second line, she says Badi muddat mein ummeedon ki kaliyan muskurayi hain - talking about flowerbuds (referencing Anarkali)

Dilip Kumar, who debuted in the 1940s and eventually became one of the biggest Indian movie stars of the 1950s and 1960s, was a pioneer of method acting, predating Hollywood method actors such as Marlon Brando. Also known as tragedy king and the Kohinoor of India. pls check out his films and watch him flex his acting muscles. An inspiration for many actors from Amitabh Bachchan to Naseeruddin Shah and Shah Rukh Khan to Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

K Asif, the director, made this film over a decade, with actors dying in between. So it's possible color became a thing halfway through the development of the film. He made another film over 23 years, actor passed away, then he passed away, then his widow released an incomplete version of the film another decade later. Talk about love for film. And, he was a tailor to start with, and made just 4 films. What a classic.

I don’t know if your concern was addressed or not. Only one song (jab pyar kia to darna kya) and entire court scene was actually shot in coloured. This movie took a full decade to complete the entire movie due to financial and other reasons. The ending dialogues of this Qawwali are superb. If you can then react to “khuda nigehban ho tumhara” from same movie.

Every single dialogue of this movie was written with so much thought behind it. They cut the dialogue immediately after this song in the vid you reacted to. Salim gives the rose to Bahaar, because her idea of love was romantic and fairy-tale-ish, but gave the stem of the rose to Anarkali, because her idea of love was too realistic and painful. Anarkali accepts the thorny stem happily and says, "it's my blessed fortune that I received the thorns. The petals would have withered a couple days later. But these thorns are going to stay with me forever." Very symbolic lines if you see it in the context of the larger story
