Legend has it that the lighting scene where the light comes from the top was done using natural sunlight not a spotlight. It took many days of planning and execution to get it right.

It was explained by VK Murthy, the cinematographer in an interview. Guru Dutt had asked Murthy if he could create a shaft of light will almost parallel beam ( this was BEFORE Kagaz... was conceived). So, what VK Murthy did was : He cut a round window in the wall of the studio, and he put a round mirror on the floor between Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehman. Then he slowly opened the window and what we see is the light bouncing back (yes)... hard to believe but that's how he did it... in 1959!!

Yeah, guys it's high time you watched Pyaasa (1957). As Ric said, it's long overdue. It is the first one from the Guru Dutt classic triology- Kaaghaz Ke Phool (1959) and Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam (1961) being the other two.

i miss the old bollywood style of songs which integrated well with the story and was used to express what characters were feeling and it further moved along the movie as opposed to now with all the dancing with background people in middle of the movie with no relation to the story of the movie....i hate that type of songs...this trend started in the late 80s to entire 90s and still is happening....however things are changing nowadays with many filmmakers opting to put music in the movie that tells the story rather than halts the movie in the middle

Gurudutt sahab way ahead of his time. The master of pathos, pain, cinemascope, noir, the use of prose and out of the world simmering poetic collaborations. Pyaasa should be the first, has to be. Your hear will go out to the morbidly gut wrenching "Jinhe naaz hai hind par" will remain immortal. As artists you would also relate to Kaagaz Ke Phool, was his commentary on the downward spiral of show business.

The master thinker, the master creator, the visionary, though utterly sensitive to the extent of sinking in depression, nver to come out ultimately! That was the legendary Guru Dutt! In his short life, what he has created , is still unmatchable in many many ways! It's not at all surprising that "Pyasa" is included by "Time" in the list of top 100 ever made movies anywhere in the world! The great film maker was a genius and enigma combined! The way the team of Guru Dutt (the director, actor, producer, co-writer), Abrar Alvi (Writer, assisted Guru Dutt in direction too) and the great cinematographer Murthy (the only cinematographer who got India's highest cinematic honor "Dada Saheb Phalke Award"), has created unbeatable, unsurpassable, astounding masterpieces! Ever salutable people indeed! Thanx for chosing the piece for reactions here!

Kagaz ke phool and Pyasaa are two films that Amitabh Bachhan loves. Guru Dutt saheb was way ahead of his times and surely it’s an understatement that he would be in the list of top 3 film makers in the entire country. On Pyasaa the great legendary actor Dilip Kumar was signed, and Guru Dutt saheb was the director and he waited from morning until late afternoon, and when you see this film the first shot of this film was shot that very evening and Guru Dutt took the call, and acted himself, rest is history. Guru Dutt saheb was from Karnataka a person who was a master photographer and later this helped him in the process of film making, his sense of music and language was impeccable. A lot of people landed in Bombay just with an aspiration to work with Guru Dutt saheb, one of them is Javed Akhtar. There is lot more, he never got any award. His tragic tales in films took over his own life, separated from his wife, the great legendary singer Geeta Dutt. Became alcoholic and died due to over drinking. Salute to Guru Dutt saheb- for his films till date entertain and inspire film makers!

The best thing about your reactions is you guys never talk or interrupt in between. And you guys have genuine way of reacting. Nothing is made up artificially. And i must admit your pronounciation is on point mostly . Cheers

Guru Dutt and his movies, including Pyaasa, have a large cult following in France and Germany. It was a huge commercial success during its 1984 French Premiere, something Guru Dutt never witnessed during his lifetime. Since then, the movie has been screened to huge mass appeal the world over, like the recent screening at The 9th International Festival of Asian Cinema held in Vesoul, in February 2003.[14] This one's taken from Wikipedia 👆. This movie was quite ahead of its time in India. After quite a few decades, people appreciated it. The direction and the angle of lighting is quite revolutionary, given the budget constraints of that era

I remember changing my perception of black and white movies and cinema in general after watching Pyaasa. I was 17, never have looked back...only regret we were never meant to be blessed be more work of Mr. Guru Dutt. A very tragic life in its own right. The singer of this song is his wife, and their life was going through a rough patch.

LET ME TELL YOU A STORY! The male lead and director of this film " KAGAZ KE PHOOL "(1959) the great Guru Dutt and Waheeda Rehmanji rumoured to have an extramarital affair. This song is sung by the great Geeta Dutt, who was married to Guru Dutt in real life. She knew about the affair as everybody in the industry was talking about it. And if you listen to the song carefully, the lyrics kind of similarly also conveyed the feelings what Geetaji might have felt during singing the song for her husband knowing the fact that this movie/scene would express the inner turmoil between the male and female lead character, played by her husband and his lovelady at that time. Even the movie script of "kagaz ke phool" is kind of inspired by the relationship between Guru Dutt and Waheedaji. ( A troubled director fell in love with an orphan actress but their love faced many obstructions from his wife's family and society ). Their affair started during their first film together..PYAASA in around 1956-57. The marriage between Guru Dutt and Geeta Dutt got affected by the affair and Geeta Dutt became alcoholic and they separated later. Guru Dutt was also a chronic alcoholic. In 1964 he died of accidental overdose with sleeping pills and alcohol because of depression. He attempted suicide twice before that. After hearing the news, Geeta Dutt became ill due to nervous breakdown and became more alcoholic and died of Cirrhosis in 1972. Waheeda ji was also depression and in love with Guru dutt for a long time after his death and was unmarried till 1974. This is a sad and tragic love story between three brilliant artists and I am a fan of all of them. P.S- in 1971, just before her own demise and almost 5 years after the death of her husband, Geetaji sang a song called "Mujhe jaan na kaho meri jaan"(My Dear Beloved, Don't call me dear) from the movie ANUBHAB. It was one of her last recordings and she sang the song so emotionally and could not hold her tears during the recording ( you can hear it in the song ) probably in memory of her loving husband. Here is the link of the song- kzread.info/dash/bejne/eGp6zbiJf7DaprA.html
