FAQ:
1) "What's the name of that theme song?" It's called "Whatever," performed by Trevor Fisher and The Special Ones.
2) "Why are there so many lighters on the beach?" Ninety percent of the plastic trash in the oceans comes from city streets. A dog knocks over a trash can, the trash goes in the gutter, the gutter goes to a sewer, the sewer goes to a river, the river goes to the sea. The sea grinds most of it up into microparticles, but lighters are made to hold compressed gas; they are enormously strong and durable. They'll float around for years and never even lose their bright colors. Most of the lighters I find were probably used by street food vendors in Yangon to light their charcoal braziers.
3) "Aren't you afraid of tsunamis?" There has never been a tsunami on Turtle Beach and there never will be one. Tsunamis are only dangerous in shallow water; it's very, very deep right offshore here. That's one reason the turtles like it here.
4) "What if Turtle Beach becomes overdeveloped?" Very little chance of that, and if it happens it will because they finally build the international airport in Phang Nga. But even then, the geology of the place is against development. Even if they some day revoke the protected status of the national park, it will still be too deep to anchor a boat here, so no yachts, no speed boats, no long-tail boats. No jet skis or parasailing. Also, we are not in a bay, protected by headlands, like any tourist beach you can name. Six months out of every year the wind comes off the sea like a freight train. In two years I've paid twice to have the front doors repaired; they were literally blown off their hinges.
5) "Steve, you're a narcissist." Yeah, I say as much in almost every video. I was diagnosed with narcissistic personality disorder when I was seventeen years old. It manifests itself in many ways, including a variety of facial tics and a compulsion to touch my face and hair when I'm excited. You can see me do that in every video. Between 2003 and 2007 I was housebound with social anxiety disorder. I suffer from insomnia and stress-related vertigo. I am an only child of a single parent, so narcissism is page one in the DSM. That's why you won't ever see anybody else on this channel. No meet-ups with other vloggers, no interviews, no walk-n-talks on crowded streets or in markets. It's always just Steve, alone in some deserted place, so that the focus always remains on Steve. But thanks for that facile and ill-informed diagnosis, Doctor Obvious. Are you going to send me a bill for all that insight?
6) "Steve, sometimes you react aggressively to comments." No shit, Sherlock?

A horse walks into a bar... The bartender says, "Hey". The horse replies, "Sure". A turtle walks into a bar and orders some water. The bartender gives that turtle a glass of water and the turtle slowly walks away with it. The next day, the turtle comes again with the same order. This repeats for four days, but on day 5 the bartender decides to ask the turtle: Man, why do you just order water. Wouldn’t you like to try some cocktails or something? The turtle replies: Not now, man, my house is on fire!

8 or 9 years ago I had Thai driver's licences that I stupidly let expire. Now, at 76, the local office seems to want to make reissue more difficult. Since we are fortunate enough to be able to return to the US periodically I just go to the AAA every year and give them $20 for a new International licence. We also visit Europe periodically. It's getting more difficult to find car rentals there if you are over 70. I drive motorcycles in our rural area and to the village, but anything more than that and it's the car or truck. Driving in Thailand CAN be a challenge. The nearby city of Prachinburi has 2 traffic lights. If you don't learn to "drive same-same Thai" you can grow old and die trying to make a right turn at an uncontrolled intersection. Stopping to allow a pedestrian cross the street only causes confusion and puts them at greater risk. 😅

Cool FAQs, Steve. I think you've got it covered! I get blown away by some comments on the GOM vlogs. People who claim to watch that program regularly sometimes still don't get what the deal is with how you two interact there. Some people never learn. It is like every day they wake up, they are a newborn and have to relearn things. I imagine that might plague them in everyday life as well. Always a great watch both here and on GOM. Yours is amongst 7 or 8 different YT vlogs that convinced me to visit Thailand from The States last year to see if it was a viable retirement spot. I get the 'old school/traditional' Thailand piece from people like yourself, and the touristy etc stuff from some others. I have lived here for 2 months now and have enjoyed every single day. I hope to live here many, many years. Side note - Chris Parker's YT work made my traveling here so much easier, especially my 1st trip. His videos are fantastic and professional - and he seems genuine in his desire to help others have a smooth transition to Thailand.

Depends also on the Province as they all have their own rules… I have a valid US and International, and Koh Samui made me go through the entire process (2 Theory test and driving tests for Motorcycle and Auto) Cheers

Turned out it was awful. Overcooked to the point that I could pound on the table with it. Meanwhile the veggies were barely cooked at all. It was like eating a crudité platter.

I have been driving for 63 years. I am now 79 years old and went to have my license renewed. I was told that I am too old and now have no valid license. Getting old stinks.

A lovely cafe. Was it recommended or happened upon? One of the most under-appreciated features of Thailand are the unexpected little places blessed with delightful ambience and hospitality and good food. My guesstimate is 99% of visitors come, swirl around in the tourist spots and leave none the wiser.

Markelliott6105 - Nice try. When you try to appeal to Dr. Jeckle the sophisticated, creative coastal liberal, you may wind up with the pragmatic Mr. Hyde from Iowa. Me Hungry. Me Stop Walking. Me Have Food. 😄
