In 1987 I was still at school in a small town in the highlands of Scotland. Nineteen years later I packed one suitcase and moved to Thailand and I am very happy. Regarding visas, I have always completed my own visa although I do have my Thai wife to assist. The first time applying for my marriage visa was the most difficult but we managed. The IO's at Si Racha immigration were very helpful. Now we have it organized and never have an issue. 1900 baht per year or 30K baht for an agent who you still have to supply the paperwork too. It's a no brainer.

I took my second semester off from university in '87 and backpacked through Australia and New Zealand for a couple of months with my brother. I can relate to the receiving mail from home when living overseas. I taught English in Osaka for a year in '92 and my folks would ship me taped episodes of 'Seinfeld' and 'Cheers.' My friends likewise recorded cassettes of new music and sent them out. The Cure's "Wish" and Concrete Blonde's "Walking in London" still take me back to my life there whenever I listen to them. Thanks for another great presentation, Steve!

Steve, A friend of mine went to immigration 5 times and finally had everything. Signed copies, multiple copies, passport photos, and TM30. On tgat day they realized he had a non-Thai landlord and then they wanted stuff from him. The landlord later replied "Oh yeah I should have told you that, sorry." He handed my friend 3 file folders of paper and said you're gonna need all that. That's when he called me and said he's going to my visa agent. She has honest, affordable and been around a long long time. Her office is right next to my condo. Anything I need done i'm usually in and out of her office within two minutes. I do admire that you were able to get all this done on your own, without pissing off an immigration agent. LOL

I have never used visa agents and have always done it myself. Same when I applied for Permanent Residence, then for citizenship. Contrary to popular belief, most government agents are more than pleased to deal with people directly, as long as you are polite and respectful. Dealing with government departments helps you learn a lot about the way the country works (Ok, I'm a bit nerdy) and the contacts you make can be useful.

In 1987 I started a way too long stay in frigid northern Indiana, just a few years after graduating college. 17 of the longest years of my life in that horrible place on the wrong side of Lake Michigan (in winter anyway). I got 'stuck' due to landing a decent paying job in an inexpensive city, so leaving wasn't so easy until I finally had enough. Sometimes I think I am still recovering from that stretch decades later. Arizona, Nevada & Thailand from there to make up for the brutality, the cold & the lameness of Indiana. Finding my Turtle Beach on the outskirts of Jomtien.

Hi Steve. I looked forward to your weekly monologue and enjoyed it very much. Thank you. I share your apprehension towards Immigration. For more than ten years I utilized an agent doing my annual visa renewals. In the end, it was about 20K. So, half of what you paid. Anyhow, eventually, my better half said, "don't waste your money. You fulfill all criteria. Let's go together and do it ourselves". That worked as well as a chocolate teapot... My wife got so upset with the immigration dragon in Bangkok, that she almost got me deported...(joking). In the end, I traded quick but expensive service with no questions asked, for 3 day-trips to immigration. Happy you made it - it is indeed possible! Same for driving license.

Thank you! I love Thailand, and will be there again in about 8 months. Visiting family and friends. The Thai are wonderful. Thanks again Steve, you're a remarkable human being. Thank you for doing this "thing". "You can speak to me, Steve, I am a semi retired engineer, and "decorated at that". "Speak to me!" "I'll listen, I promise". (Re; Alzheimer's ... start consuming "fat", and "cholesterol" ... there's a secret in there, I can't tell). I've met astronauts and the great Edward Teller, but I'm still waiting to be impressed. I've met a few Thai, very special people, and I am impressed! (Some very impressed! They are such wonderful and lovely people!) I wish I could tell more, but the monarchy likes silence.

In 1987, I was planting Cocoa trees three kilometers from Cahuita National Park created in 1970 as a National Monument. I mention the Park because, unlike Turtle Beach, the residents of the original town of Cahuita were Not allowed to maintain the houses existing there. The residents were given lots in an area just outside known at that time as The Bluff. The original houses were built on posts above the shallow water to avoid sand flies. All the houses eventually fell into the sea. There is now no evidence of the town, not even a plaque. The Bluff has been renamed Cahuita. What happened to the Cocoa trees? Unbeknownst to me, the USAID had been giving trees to every woman in West Africa who would take in an effort of empowerment. When my trees got to harvest, the price fell from the $2000/ton price since anyone could remember to $800/ton. Thank you Hershey's!🙏

He mentioned there that Chamnan found it in Steve's glass or sunglass case. I don't know that he ever said how it got there though. Perhaps I missed it.

Apparently the week before, when Tim and I filmed GOM at a local restaurant, after the show I put the thing in my sunglasses case. It must have been annoying me. Then I forgot that I had done that. I only wear my sunglasses to drive the motorbike and I guess I had not worn them for the whole week.

Steve, don't worry about the tech, this is your style and so many of us like and watch every week. Curious where did you find the tooth ? 1987 was in school in Ireland, seems an age ago. Well done sorting your visa out yourself. Visa agents are overrated and over priced. In 20 years used them twice, always a hassle ! I do it myself 18 yrs, not being "Kee-Nok" I just know what Tor Mor needs and everyone happy. I was told 20 years ago dress smartly at Immigration / government offices and I always do. I'm increasingly shocked at the state of some people coming into Bangkok Immigration thesedays. Whatever about tourists, but in the Business visa section ! ! Look forward to next week and your big turtle day outing !!

I have learned a lot from you. I wear pants and also long sleeve shirt in most situations dealing with government or even the bank. But in Pattaya I don't feel it makes a difference. I'm usually the only firang in pants.

Yeah. Apparently my views are twenty years out of date. Even in the little, poky Phang Nga office I saw farang in shorts and T-shirts. It's a brave new world. But I'll still be wearing my nice clothes when I go.

Facebook does not even allow political rants anymore. Think I wrote something about Trump being an idiot and I got a message from Facebook "My post was deleted and if I did it again my account would be deleted." Hahaha actual a good think as least I don't have to see those Maga conspiracy rants anymore. Always enjoy seeing your beautiful face every week Steve.

Lessons learned are like Bridges burned You only need to cross them but once Is the knowledge gained Worth the price of the pain? Are the spoils worth the cost of the hunt? Fly - but remember don`t look down Take as much as you think you ought to Give just as much as you can Don`t forget what your failures have taught you Or else you`ll learn them all over again Or else you`ll have to learn them All over again.
