How to Succeed in Thailand Without Really Trying: PFTB

    In support of your rant, I moved here with enough pension income to comfortably live here until I go to that big BBQ at my local Wat. I think my most important life lesson was learning what is "enough" for me. Almost every time I meet with my foreigner friends who feel compelled to be involved in some post-retirement business enterprise in Thailand I am so very grateful I was able to come here with "enough". My Turtle Beach happens to be in Isaan, and every day I wake up here, it's a blessing--one that is very much appreciated, just as it comes.

    I started on Apple Cider Vinegar a while back to settle my gallbladder. The added benefit was that it literally eliminated the GERD I’ve had for years. No more medications! I add the lemon juice but also cinnamon! Yeah so many people want me to go into business with them here in Hua Hin! I tell them I’m done! Why would I jump back on the wheel? I play music but that’s never been work!

    In the past you've talked about "King & I" and how it was banned in Thailand. I watched a neat 1958 interview with Oscar Hammerstein. He said "Getting to Know You" was the number that best symbolized the play, as it was about race and color fading away as people got to know each other. South Pacific, as you mentioned, had that theme too. Hammerstein also said King & I was about a struggle within a man who was born believing in absolute power, but was persuaded to western democracy by the English governess, and was therefore in a way destroyed by her. I can see why Thais would see that as objectionable, because it paints the king as fallible and vulnerable.

  • @steverosse

    @steverosse

    5 ай бұрын

    You're overthinking it. So was Hammerstein. Since most Thais have never seen the play, and couldn't understand the language if they heard it, that seems like slim reason to hate it. But having a woman he's not married to touch the royal personage? To even dance with him? That's scandalous, and you don't need to understand the language to see that. You also see Brynner (in the film) clowning it up during the dance scene, literally breaking the fourth wall and mugging to the audience. Making a clown of the monarch? A much more in-your-face and unmistakable thing to witness than the dramaturgy involved in parsing a character's spiritual demise.

    That's Ross, from Oz, newly retired to TB. We've got a fantastic golf course here that's hardly used. Fantastic restaurant, million-dollar villas. A round there is dirt cheap, or so I'm told. There's a Pilipino guy here who was the first pro at the Club. He's helping Ross with his swing. That club is Ross' Faberge Turtle.

    Hey Steve I am new to your Channel and am really loving it. You have a great personality and I share the same dream as you in being able to spend my final years in Thailand. You made a comment that I found very interesting and would love for you to elaborate on if possible. You said that the Thai Royals do not have Thai chefs but rather Chinese chefs and you also called Thai Food "peasant" food. Very interesting. Keep up the good content dude.

  • @steverosse

    @steverosse

    Well, the Chinese chefs thing I would have read in a book thirty-some years ago. Don't ask me to cite my source. But it makes sense, for no other reason than that royals, anywhere, always do whatever they can to separate themselves from the common folk. As for peasant food, sure. It's locally sourced fresh ingredients picked or slaughtered that day. Insects and reptiles make up a fair portion of the protein in the traditional SEAsian diet, Thai included. Rats from the paddies. A spice palette of only four flavors (salt, sugar, peppers and vinegar). Curries on loan from India. I'm not saying that peasant food is bad in any way. It used to be common to see school kids in the roadside ditches gathering dinner on their way home from school, picking things off trees, pulling things out of puddles. Walking down the road with their books in one hand and a bunch of green leaves in the other. It was quaint and charming. And very healthy.

    Thanks for the response! I was curious about this because of a youtuber called Goatis and his views on "slave food". I am listening to this video and you are talking about special brownies, have you ever heard of some thing called green dragon? It is special broccoli that is saturated in to everclear. Works faster than the brownies. Like you I have been a avid fan of the Broccoli starting at age 15. When I was in Thailand 20 years ago Broccoli was verboten, has that changed? @@wills9732 Yes, a big change for the moment. New governments will make new laws, but currently broccoli is sold openly and legally in fancy shops. Quality as good as in the US, and you can find it much, much cheaper here. It's a golden age, my friend.
