Tees Cottage Beam Engine Gas Engine Pumping Station

Ойын-сауық

In 1849 Tees Cottage Pumping Station revolutionised the water supply to Darlington by offering cleaner, piped water to homes and businesses which had previously relied on contaminated ground wells, polluted rivers, and rainwater tubs. In 1851, recognising the health benefits of a clean water supply, the customer base was extended to also supply Stockton, Middlesbrough and Yarm.
Tees Cottage has Lancashire Boilers dating from 1902, a 1904, steam-powered, Beam Engine and a 1914 Gas Engine, all in operation and still pumping water from the River Tees (although no longer supplying the town’s water!).

Hi Andy & family& friends What an amazing victorian pumping house, marvel of engineering back in the day. Darlington was the place to live in victorian times if you didnt want to die ftom cholera! Great to see kids interested in old engineering too! Of course i love the minature train. Kudos to everyone who keeps this place up & running. ❤❤❤❤😊👍

Hello Carol :) It certainly is an important part of the fight against cholera. The staff were amazing and the time and effort really shows for them. There is a members section extra for tees cottage which I will share at the weekend. :)

I would have a thousand questions...like why are the machines so big; do the parts wear out often; how do they change out the old parts? Yeah. Thanks for this. I've always heard how impresssive the Victorian machines are.

Good question! They had a maintenance team and a large workshops. The engineers there looked to be well acquainted with long hours keeping things moving. I bet it was amazing to see when it was fully operational.
