Incredible Water Tunnel built after thousands Died of Cholera

Ойын-сауық

In today’s episode we venture inside a Victorian era tunnel, constructed to carry fresh water between the villages of Conisborough to New Edlington in south Yorkshire, England. The tunnel was mined and commissioned somewhere between 1890 and 1896 as it didn’t appear on the 1890 OS mapping but is clearly shown on the 1896 map of the same area.
The need for fresh drinking water is essential in everyday life and after three catastrophic cholera outbreaks in the United Kingdom which led to tens of thousands of deaths in otherwise healthy humans. New sanitation infrastructure was installed bringing fresh clean drinking water to many areas including here. Join us on this feature length adventure into the forgotten engineering beneath the surface.

Where the steel ceiling was, thatched been rebuilt using LBC common bricks, and probably an imperial 3" before imperial bricks were all sorts of sizes, then of course we had metric, always good to have a measure with you, you can date the bricks then,

This was so interesting Andy, what a funny way to tet inside a tunnel. It was creepy & i dont like spiders! I dont think ive seen a tunnel as long as this one before, it must have been so uncomfortable to walk through with it being quite small. ❤😊😱👍

Glad you enjoyed it Carol, the low height was a problem for me as im quite tall. My nech hurt the next day from crouching so much. Paul doesnt like spiders either. I dont mind them if they leave me alone. Thanks for watching and for being the lovely person that you are :)

Pity the poor people who had to carry the brick in and make the walls/arches. Why is it bricked for only part of it?

Hello there, its mainly due to the different materials encountered during tunneling. The natural rock and soil changes along the route meaning different shoring methods
