I grew up with a Technics SL-5; direct drive, linear tracker, P mount cart. Today, I love my SL-1200 MK2. I also have a fully automatic SL-1300 which was like an automatic version of the 1200. Rock on.

I started my journey with an SL-Q20 with an Audiotechnica 152LP cartridge. It was actually more than adequate for many years finally replacing it with a 1200GR sporting a Nagaoka Jewaltone JT-80BK which is quite nice. I tried it with a Grado Platinum 3 but found it a little too dark for my liking. Technics may not be the ultimate turntable but there is something to be said about ease of use and the ability to swap cartridges and do adjustments quickly allowing you to enjoy the music.

I was so shocked to learn of Nick’s sudden passing last year. He was one of a kind! I was introduced to him through a friend and he had only just given my old Dual TT a tune up! Is Connor taking over the shop?

I got an SL-1200GR and I am very glad I got it, but the cueing level, the tonearm lifter, is not great. It just feels a little flimsy and I feel like the tonearm can fall on it's own if the lifter isn't totally all the way back into "up" position. Mine may even be defective, which is actually inexcusable at this price. But I don't really use it so it's not super important to my everyday use. It's just annoying to know that I have something in the setup that isn't exactly what it should be. Ultimately it's just a big mystery why Technics cueing levers aren't the best in the industry. The turntable is such a tank otherwise. The lifter should be the best in the industry. It should be the lifter that all others are compared to.
