TEC Pistol!

Ok, we still don't know exactly what to call this thing. It's a modern take on the classic TEC-9, and the awesome thing is that it's caliber switchable between 9mm and 30 Super Carry! Former Kel-Tec head engineer, Toby Obermeit, pays me a visit and brings along his new baby. It's a standard blowback firearm, but it's made using technologies that didn't exist when its 1980s ghetto-blaster namesake went into production. The original TEC-9 didn't have the greatest reputation...it was known for being cheap and being used by criminals. Toby's take on the original design goes way beyond just cloning the original...it's high-quality, hammer-fired and reliable. And it's definitely a sexy gun! I hope he ends up getting this baby into production! His website is tobiasarms.com/, and his KZread channel is / @tobiasarmsllc

The work you have done on that magazine is great, its begging for a whole ecosystem of guns and calibers to be built around it. Good guns are reasonably common, good magazine designs are very rare. I hope this will become one of those successes! EDIT: Holy crap, the 50 round quad stack magwell being directly compatible with a scorpion magazine is amazing. Take my money!

@@zendell37 I totally agree. Today, many products are miscarriages due to the influence of lawyers and regulatory affairs specialists. Many design people have too little knowledge of production processes, and their designs are considered awkward in the production environment. One of the reasons I opted for a specialization in production management and technology, was to be able to come up with better design, and to participate in the industrialization process. Industrialization is all too often overlooked. All points that my teachers brought up and advised me. Now that I'm in my early 60's, I can only be happy I heeded their advice because they were right. The different videos on this channel also demonstrate how production processes and design are intertwined.

@@robendert7617 Indeed. The "how it's made" is very important. Forgotten weapons did a series on the Garand and found out at the last second if the receiver is cut a certain way, then magazines loaded one way would always jam first round. It's little issues like that that'll often be overlooked by the lawyers and beam counters. You have to have the experience and understand the why to it all.

I have a suggestion, if the length of the bolt will allow. The bottom of the bolt should be cut to an f/a cut AR-15 bolt carrier group pattern and modify the lower to be compatible with AR-15 triggers. If those modifications were possible that would make it much more marketable.

AR15 triggers are THICK. as in tall. it would raise the bore which is not good for recoil, etc. This low profile trigger mechanism fits MUCH better. sol Invictus arms tried that with the TAC-9.... i did not end well.

It's pretty true, though. And a funny way to put it. Some designers are dead set on certain things and some designs can't have certain things changed without major changes.

It clearly needs further development , refinement, and streamlining but he’s on the right path definitely. Suggestions include but not limited to: 1) A new and worthwhile BRACE. 2) Better material or style of hand guard for heat dissipation when shooting with an ungloved hand. 3) A fancy great trigger like an ALG. 4) 1/2x28 barrel threading for a suppressor and maybe come with a tri lug adapter. 5) An excellent cerakote finish for longevity. 6) 35 round standard magazine to be on par with with competition. 7) Longer picatinny rail for red dot and worthwhile iron sights. I was looking at the Beretta PMX and those magazine are expensive and they bought the rights for the original Tec-9. He’s got something good he just needs to go to the drawing board with someone who has some manufacturing might behind them. I would even argue to see if this could be scaled up for rifle calibers

Well this looks like fun. For a time the TEC-9 was one of my favorite plinking guns. Mine always ran everything I put in it perfectly. They just need a little bit of tuning to remain extremely reliable. Factory magazines are important, and using the magazine as a grip will cause a malfunction. The most critical element is the extractor. It's retained by a set screw, and must be set at exactly the right spot to firmly retain the empty case for ejection. This is very easily accomplish by setting it to the rim of a cartridge. It's also important to make sure the claw is sharp and square and it has good tension. Recoil and striker springs need to be replaced every several thousand rounds. This is often overlooked generally. With factory magazines, good springs, and a properly adjusted extractor it should be monotonously reliable. It also helps to have decent sights. I put an M1 Carbine rear sight on mine and made an Uzi style front sight that bolts in the shroud. It actually delivers excellent accuracy once it shoots to the sights. Pretty miserable long squishy heavy trigger, but it can be managed.

The power of the round is nearly identical to 9mm. So you will not see a scaling down of the guns.... ONLY the magazines (or increase in capacity). you still need the same mechanisms/weights as any other 9mm to function well.

She's a beautiful little pistol. And yea people smack talk Kel-Tec, but i have a good feeling those same people never shot one... nor do they go shooting in places that might ruin their fancy EDC with all the expensive junk stuck on it. I mean shit, you wouldn't wear a tuxedo to go mudding. That doesn't mean you won't ever play in the mud!! Cheap guns deserve love too!

I had one back in the early 90’s before the ban. It had two 30 round magazines. It was stolen. The mags when loaded past 20 would fail to feed. Now that there’s a drum I may replace it. Or build it better. Balanced.
