It's an 80s signature song - like Simple Minds "Don't you forget about me".

Hey @leroyrs , agree, this is by FAR an signature song of the 80s and my personal favorite. Just curious, to you thing the "Don't You Forget About Me" is as prominent as it is due to the Breakfast Club? I only ask because during discussion with others, when I have them listen to that side by side with Crowded House "Don't Dream It's Over" most people actually prefer the later. Just wondering your thoughts.

@@willwhitman7534 Sure "The Breakfast Club" made that song iconic. But IMO TFF and Simple Minds share a similiar sound. "Everybody rules the World" and "Alive and Kicking" have a comparable song structure with that positive very melodic upbeat sound.

The opening lyrics have always spoken to me..."Welcome to your life. There's no turning back." This song was released just as I was graduating from high school and turning 18 in 1985. The more time that passes, the more thought provoking those lyrics become. It was as if it was a send off to the rest of my adult life. And quickly, the older I got the more I began to realize there truly is no turning back. There are no do-overs. Once that time is gone, it's gone forever. Don't waste it. Make it the most of it. Here I sit, 39 years later with my 57th birthday just a couple of months away wondering where it all went and wishing I could have another chance to get it right.

Roland Orzabal (on guitar) and Curt Smith (on vocals) aren't related but they were childhood friends from Bath, England. They do have somewhat similar voices though, which could be a regional thing. Both actually share lead vocals pretty evenly throughout their catalogue. Curt is also the band's Bassist. Certainly check out "Head over heels" which features Roland on lead vocals. Also "Shout" (they were big into Shout therapy back then), "Advice for the young at heart", "Change", "Pale Shelter", "Mad World", "Woman in chains", "I Believe", "Sowing the Seeds of love"

This song was sung by bass player Curt Smith, and his musical partner is the guitar player, Roland Orzabal, with the two the bandleaders. Roland sings lead about half the time, and they generally always provide backup vocals for each other. Both of them endured very difficult childhoods, resulting in them both being very introverted, and they'd been undergoing Primal Scream Therapy to help break them out of their introverted shells - which is what inspired their song Shout. The band's name, Tears For Fears, was also inspired by their collective therapy and emotional struggles. Everybody Wants To Rule The World would easily make the list of the Top 20 most important songs of the 1980s, and this monster hit enjoyed 4 or 5 years of hourly rotation on the radio, along with the other smash hit from this album, Shout. EWTRTW has appeared in MANY movies and even more TV shows. Here's a (very likely incomplete) list of movies known to feature the song: Real Genius (1985) The Secret Of My Success (1987) Peter's Friends (1992) American Psycho (2000) Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011) The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) (cover by Lorde) Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) Pitch Perfect 2 (2015) Deadpool (2016) Wonder Woman (2017) The Lego Batman Movie (2017) Ready Player One (2018) Alita: Battle Angel (2019) Trolls World Tour (2020) Tesla (2020)

Great to see you react to this - it is indeed an iconic 80s hit which was huge in the mid-1980s on both sides of the Atlantic. Tears For Fears are a great British band, the two main performers you see (singer Curt Smith and guitarist Roland Orzabal) are still together to this day and you can find clips of them performing live even in recent years and they still sound great. There are lots of good songs from them apart from this one: "Shout", "Woman In Chains", "Mad World", "Sowing the Seeds of Love", "Head Over Heels", "Laid So Low (Tears Roll Down)", "Break It Down Again", "Raoul and the Kings of Spain" - to pick just the main highlights!

Nice! Good one! Can't remember if you've done them before. Good, very 80s band! For me, they were one of those bands that were popular when I was a kid, so they were there, in the atmosphere, but I didn't necessarily pay that much attention, but later when I was older, I was able to come to really appreciate how good they really were. This song in particular was used in at least a few movies in the 80s. They have a lot of good songs, like "Shout", "Sewing The Seeds Of Love", and "Mad World" are some of my favorites. Actually there was a great cover of "Mad World" in the early 2000s, by Gary Jules, I think, and Curt Smith of Tears For Fears, did a cute video of him performing it with his teenage daughter not too long ago.

No, they weren't related, but Curt Smith, who's the main singer in this song, and Roland Orzabal, who's playing guitar, are British, I think come from the same neighborhood, met as teenagers, were in another band together very early on, but the two of them just vibed together, and found they were really on the same wavelength, and interested in the same kind of stuff, and had very similar upbringings, so broke off from that other group, and started Tears For Fears instead. They would both write songs, I think sometimes together, and sometimes separately, and they both perform, but some songs, one would take more of the lead, and other songs the other would, but either way, they were really great together. Seems like they were a pretty tight partnership for quite a long time, but after the fame, and the this and that, I think Curt Smith eventually just felt like he needed to be alone for once. I don't know exactly, but I think it's something like that.

This takes me back to my teen years. Please more Tears for Fears. I've always loved the official video for their song "Head Over Heels." The one playing guitar sings lead on that song.

Been waiting 'a while' for you to get to this band, that was better than I thought, thanks! There are lots of beauties from them for you to listen to in time to come, so enjoy. In fact, a while ago one of the singers did an acoustic version with his daughter and it has 10 million views so far(!), I hope you check out their version of Mad World.

The song was featured on the soundtrack of several films including Felix the Cat, Friends of Peter, Romy & Michelle, School of Geniuses and Change Your Life with a Click. The song also appeared in the early trailers of the film Independence Day, but was eventually favoured by R.E.M.’s It’s the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine). The song also appeared in the television series Numb3rs, Malcolm, Mr. Robot (played in melancholy-dissociated style by Angela Moss in the karaoke of a nightclub in the episode Illegal Interception) and in the video games Saints Row 2 and World in Conflict and was reinterpreted by Darren Criss in the popular television series Glee. In 2014, a cover by Lorde was featured on the soundtrack of Hunger Games: The Girl of Fire, and was later used in the trailers of Assassin’s Creed: Unity and Dracula Untold and in the final sequence of the first season of The Royals. The song was also performed in the film Pixels and in 2016 a cover of the band Ninja Sex Party was released. The song is also featured in the films Ready Player One and Bumblebee. On November 7, 2018, it was used in the fourth episode of the third season of the American television series Riverdale, and on May 15, 2020, it closed the first episode of the first season of The Great. The song has been sampled and remixed by many artists, singers and DJs, an example is that of Tiësto of 2023, in collaboration with the same Tears For Fears.

It's not your current year playlist, full of 80s songs. It's John Hughes' playlist, from the 1980s. That one movie director was the biggest hit maker of the 80s. If the song was in a John Hughes teen movie, it was going to sell and get radio play.
