Larry PLEASE do a video on how you teach "leave it", my dog struggles with leave it so much, he is so nosy it's hard to get him to REALLY leave something alone.

Love the videos man, I’ve been watching mangos progress and training her along with my baby gsd. I needed this video because her “drop it” needs work. She couldn’t care 2 oinks about treats when training, she just wants me , and the toy I have in my hand.

The way I taught my not-food-motivated dog to out was to use another tug toy as the incentive to out - that way the reward for releasing is to get to bite a new toy! :) I used 2 balls to teach fetch too - she'd only release the one she had if I had another to throw. Over time she learnt that releasing the ball meant it would be thrown again and I only need 1 ball now.

I tried this out on my female Dutch Shepherd today. She is 8 months old and has only been with me for 1 week. I have been using kill the prey item and substituting toys to get her to release the bite. I had my doubts about her releasing for food because my male who is 2 years old could give 2 shits about food once we start the prey games. To my surprise, it worked. She released for the food treat. Thanks for sharing. BTW: I used Kosher beef franks as the treat.

When we train or play with the retriever puppies, we say, “always leave ‘em hungry”. (For another retrieve.). If they get bored, we are over-doing it.

My dog is also more interested in the game / play than any food rewards so I just use toy and play rewards for most high energy stuff and save the food rewards for counter conditioning and calmer obedience work. If training is made into a fun game that's far more rewarding for the dog than boring repetitive sit-stand-stay stuff anyway.

Hello I forgot to mentioned I am looking into getting a rottie pup,I have had Rottweiler before I an have done regular house hold obedience but back then all I could really fine were watered down and rottie.I am looking I into different lines and also wanted to have your recommendation not only on temperament but also male or female as this will be a house companion,Thank you in advance

Hello sir you are talking about drives and temperament but what if you don't want a high drive pup but one that's easy to train and live with in the house doing obedience and ability to do protection, what type of temperament ,or how do you make sure the breeder picks the right pup for you and explain this middle of the road or calm and laid back, help

Thanks for post. I am very reluctant to use compulsion and have not to this point with my 8 year old German girl. With that being said she has good toy drive. Not high speed working dog level but way more than food and plenty to use as a reward as continue forward. Just have to get her locked on to the out first. Thank again

Larry, could you pleaseee post a video on how to teach a puppy not to 'out' but 'LEAVE IT' before they even get there. I have literally went through all of your videos (yes, since the ones starting 2010 lol) and cannot find one where you would show how to start the teaching process from the very beginning. THANK YOU

That makes sense may i ask you a question or two my pup is 10 weeks old and i use chicken to teach him to sit lay look ,but sometimes i only reward with a good boy and or a toy tug etc..I feel i lose him a little, attention wise ,unless food is present .Also we tried our first lead/walk today i have had this dog for 4 days and he was good on the walk no treats just a little leash pressure he was good but again easily distracted (which i understand new pup new things its not a problem) my question is am i rushing him or expecting to much ,we train sit /down look.three times a day for about 3-5 mins max then we have some looking around the garden some cuddles some toy games pulling etc i am doing this 3-5 times a day weather dependant he sleeps after every hour or exercise /freedom and is crated and has a barrier which he seems to be very happy with ..I have a ton of questions which seem to me un answerd by the internet, mis information is alarmingly high.. thanks for focusing in on honest problems and not trying to sell me a brand of food in the process ..great job

If the question is are you rushing it or expecting to much the answer is yes. Having a puppy is a marathon not a sprint, they will pick some things up quicker than others. I would say keep doing what youre doing, not treating every single time is OK. Remember hes only been on the Earth for 10 weeks, just keep having fun and dont get frustrated, the pup will sense it.

Thanks its been a hard first two weeks but i have been learning and trying to do lots of different things ,we are now walking in the forest which has been a such a great time he walks like a pro on lead and drinks from my water bottle i have a smart dog he also took to the van easy enough but i am tired i spend every waking hour with this dog from 5am till 10.30 he naps through the day which is when i get stuff done but its worth it ! He has started licking me instead of always biting so its a good day ,thanks again good advice is hard to come by everyone here is super against this breed of dog but i love them ..

Davis yes it is the best breed on the planet in my opinion.. I will tell you this though, I did what you're doing with my last shepherd, spending every waking second with him. This turned out to not be the best idea when he got older. He became overly attached to the point where it wasn't really healthy for him. I'll be getting my new 8 week old pup next Friday and this time I'll be sure to crate him a little more and give him more alone time so that doesn't happen.

Thanks Paul good tip ,i am crating him i need to go to the shops etc .. To be fair i have had no issues with anxiety at all as yet ! I will take that info and mayby do a little more crate stuff ,my wife said the same thing i am overly active with the dog .I thought by spending more time with him now he would be or feel a little more confident later or at least more trusting .Is it normal for a puppie to be this good ?I have for many years walked friends dogs but this puppy is by far the best walker i have ever experienced its like he is not on the leash at all i have to keep checking ..or am i just lucky ..TOday all the dogs behind gates were barking at him and he could not care less i was amazed ..

Any suggestion for a lab to release the dummy. She is very food driven, maybe more than retrieving so after she knows I have food she won't retrieve or leave my side. Prying it from her mouth is getting old though and not what the goal is obviously with those puppy teeth. She's 13 weeks

Larry I have a 6 mo morkie that we have rasie in a baby playpen instead of a crate. We have a bed for her and a pee pad in the pen. She is starting to tear up the pad or sleep on the pad more and more. What are we doing wrong? Should we remove the pad now? Is the pen too large for a 6 lb pup?

The "out"ing the food works with older dogs. I use cheerios with my pit foster and she freaking dives bombs for them, forgetting the toy existed. It's a good way to give a force free out with a dog starting tug games imo, who says it ruins the drive?? My dog got even more excited by the tug by doing this.

  • @Luculencia

    @Luculencia

Doesn't ruin drive, just may not work for dogs that aren't food motivated (like mine) she'd ignore a steak if there was a ball or a tug toy available instead xD

What is the purpose for this toy? Why talk about something like the bite rag if you don't explain its training purpose? From my understanding you can wave anything around and a dog will bite it
