    Hey Larry, I cant thank you enough for these videos. You have been a tremendous help to improving my relationship with my dogs. I do have one question, though. My lab is great in a controlled environment but when we go for walks (which we have to for bathroom purposes) and other dogs come by, the working level - even with leash pressure- isnt enough. I can even bump it up quite a bit and tge dog still doesnt comply at that point. Can you talk about what a working level should accomplish? He can feel it but it isnt enough to chamge behavior so I'm not sure if it means that the working level isnt actually high enough for that situation or if I am just expecting more than I should. For this dog, I use a martingale in addition to thw ecollar. Thanks again and stay well

    5 month old GSD I brought back from Germany a month ago. He is a great pup that performs basic sit come down quickly and eagerly while inside. He crates easily and sleeps through the night. Everything changes when he is outside. I train in fenced back yard and large patio slab. He is distracted very easily and wants to break and chase a leaf or go after a small pine cone. Very high energy. While on the leash he is pretty good but loses focus easily yet responds to command when food treat is present. Off leash he ignores verbal command of 'come' and if he had a middle finger I'm sure he would use it to communicate although about half the time he will respond if he thinks there is a treat involved.. The dog is very high energy and I give him walks and games of tug to wear him down. He is a very happy pup and responds well to "no" when being corrected inside or on leash. I hesitate to start e-collar as I am told he must be 6Months old to start. I recently put him in a prong collar 2.25 and he figured it out quickly by himself, as I left slack in leash and lrt him learn. This made a big difference in our walks. He stayed with me and didn't go aggressive if we walked past a yard with barking dog. Good pup. Any tips?

    MegaTripodman - sounds like a very typical 5 month old. Sounds like your doing great. Many of the behaviors you are experiencing are to be expected at that age, you’ll work through them with repetitions.

    Do you have a video on the structured walk for a mid aged puppy? I have a 7m dutch shepherd. He's always wanting to be ahead, I'm not sure how much to use negative vrs positive reinforcement. I feel like I'm always having to turn the other way and snap the leash. There's a lot of conflict on the walks, because I'm not clear on what he's capable of. Thanks!

    First off i want to say that the shepherd is a beautiful dog. And i think youre a great trainer. My question is, do you have two release commands? One being free dog and the other being yes with a reward?

  • @Bornmong

    @Bornmong

    4 жыл бұрын

    Exactly, free dog means go be a dog, you're off work. Yes means a treat or toy is coming (reward). If i did my homework right, that's what it means.

    Francis Xyooj : If I may: free/free dog or whatever you want to use is a release to freedom. “Yes” is a terminal marker- meaning : you did a great job, get your paycheck. It is a release, but it is a release to further engagement, not to freedom.

    We just adopted a 5 year old Rotweiller from a SPCA. It was told to us that he was surrendered because the woman couldn't afford him. She had asked them to euthanize him. Fortunately, the shelter was "non kill". It is evident that someone spent training time with him. He knows basic commands very well. The problem is that sometimes he noses us and amps up to play and is very rough. Otherwise, hes loving and gentle. Seems that some of our body language triggers him, like putting our pants on and tucking in our clothes, or animately using our arms while telling a story. He gets very vocal and I think wants to play, but biting is involved and I don't know how to engage and have problems getting him to stop. I need help understanding this. Any ideas?

    Shadow is thirteen years old, she just poops while she walks or she just stops in her tracks to poop! At her age, there isn't any asking time... Otherwise Shadow remains a great companion and a halfway trained dog. No heel for her, she just gets out and trots in the gutter ahead of me. Gentle, sweet and loveable she's Aussie and Husky mix. These are great training videos and my youngster Tizzy who just turned one, is learning much from them, thanks to Larry putting out these videos. Can you review hand signals or direct me to a site with hand signals? Thanks!

    Larry or anyone. I understand why Larry uses “yes” as the marker followed by the food reward, however I do not understand the use of the word “good”. I’d think it would confused the dog. Doesn’t it just act as an additional marker or reward. Why is it necessary?

  • @trainwright7023

    @trainwright7023

    4 жыл бұрын

    Steve C good is praise, it’s part of building up the dog and your relationship with the dog. You phase out food and YOU want to be the REWARD and “good” is part of the praise that you want to give the dog. The marker word “Yes” means it did the command correctly, a treat is coming and the dog is also free to do what it wants after yes. When not using the marker word the dog is expected to stay in command until given the “free dog” command. Praise Is important for the dog to want to please you and for you to convey your happiness that the dog is happy and compliant- dogs enjoy that kind of praise the most. If your dog doesn’t like praise you’ve got to work on your relationship so the dog wants to hear and see your praise

    Hi Larry, I've bene watching your videos for a while and I have big doubt that I want to share with you! First of all, I'm not writing this message to criticize the use of the e-collar. What I don't understand though is the benefit in using it. For example in this video you train some basic obbedience commands both with the use of e-collar and without ! When you use the e-collar for the sit, down (or whatever) Is It a form of negative reinforcement because you turn It off as soon as the dog does what you asked ? Or the training theory behind that Is different? I don't know I managed to explain myself enough but the main question Is: what benefit brings the use of e-collar in that precise moment when you use It ( The dogs have "double" reinforcement because the e collar goes off and food reward ? Or Is It for increase speed?) Looking foward for your answer Hope you understand It was not my intention to criticize your work PS: I'm a trainer too but I've never used the e collar and a trainer never stops to learn new technics or methods

  • @lklencho

    @lklencho

    4 жыл бұрын

    Yes it is negative reinforcement paired with positive reinforcement in the training phases. I use the behaviors the dog knows to teach the language of the e collar. The main reason for the e collar is to later provide off leash freedom safely fir the dog so the dog gets to live its best life

  • @ctvwrest

    Wow that sounds terrifying. I hope you get an educated response to your question. Unfortunately there's a lot of follow up questions that will need to be answered like the dynamics in the household and the existing relationships between the dog and the members of the family. Bully breeds can definitely require a certain level of care that a lot of people don't understand.

  • @genesaguy1523

    @genesaguy1523

    shawn n yea I started to add all the dynamics but then i was like I’ll just wait for exact questions so I’m not writing a book lol. It’s my grown daughters dog and she moved in with us when the dog was prob about 6 months old full time. We already have a female pitbull who is very patient with all of the kids (kids are 6 kids ranging from 15 years to 6 months old). She has not trained her dog the way we have trained our dog and so he is more hmmm “carefree”. Not aware of the kids being close jumps runs etc. The two year old does not bother him because he does not like how crazy and wild the dog is. I have asked her to take him to a behaviorist to have him evaluated but I’m still uneasy about him being here
