Listening to this podcast while my dog is staring at me and whining

I learned fairly quickly with our new puppy that time taken to “chill” seems to result in a better behaved and calmer dog overall. I think it’s like the advice given to people to take time to meditate during the day for a better sleep at night….just training the brain to find peace.

Boy did I need this podcast. Susan described my relationship with my dog to a "T". I have created a barking monster who expects to be entertained constantly. What a difference implementing her advice has made on the first day. Thank you. I was really at my wits end.

Yup! My boy is only “happy” in his crate if I am in bed with lights off ooooooor if I am not in they house at all. I have inadvertently created a “behavior junkie”. Excited to learn!! Thank you!!!

So I had been convinced that the reason my 7 month old border collie was so amped up was because he had “pent up energy”. This is totally false. We are now only on day 2 of conditioning him with the bed method…. Worked like a charm. No whining, barking, or destructive behavior. I was worried we messed him up too bad to recover at 7 months. If this is you don’t freak out. Put them in a pen and reward them frequently when they are quite and calm. We reserved his food for when he was calm and quite. Now he chooses the bed and is much more peaceful. You can do it too!! Don’t try to “tire out” your herding dog. You won’t be able to. Condition them to be calm in the house.

Oh my gosh…your channel may just be the difference my dog and I need. I am so glad I’ve discovered you. I have a low excitement threshold, intelligent, super sociable 7 month husky pup. I am not new to huskies, but this guy is another world in terms of training. Your tips are already making a world of difference. This one is especially needed as he has NEVER been able to relax without encouragement . Thank you so, so much for helping point out where I’m making mistakes and what I need to do to help fix them 😀👍😊

Oh what a spot on podcast! I am a subscriber here, which led me to enrol with 'Home School the Dog'. What a fabulous programme! I have had all sorts of dogs all my life and trained them all and did things with them 24/7, I loved my dogs, but this is something else that takes communication with my dog to a whole other level. It is so interesting and so much fun to see her working things out for herself. we are becoming a closer and closer team, a continuously developing relationship I'm so happy! My (adopted) dog was always full of life and confident generally but has become even more so and has improved in areas where she wasn't so confident, it's so great to see.

Thank you for a great video. I just found your channel. I like your way of training dogs. It's what I try to do at home with my goldendoodle. She's a hyperspeed, happy and crazy girl that loves to say hello to all people. Instead of several dog beds, we use "rug". She has her own small blanket, we bring when we visit others. Any mat, rug or blanket will do. She knows that all four paws has to stay on any square, on the floor, I point at and say "rug". What she does on the rug is her choice. I normally offer some kind of toy or a snack when we're out. One time we went to a restaurant where dogs are allowed, and I put her blanket under the table. She just went to sleep. Before rug training she would have been like fireworks at the end of a leash 😂

Super great advice… Susan, I really appreciate the clear “How to’s” step by step, with variations. ♥️ Over the past few podcasts and your program, i learned that what I thought used to be “the dog”, was actually MY miscommunication and lack of clear, consistent training. Marrow bones were responsible for my old dog breaking her top molars. One when she essentially was 3 or 4 and then I decided to try again at 11 or 12 to see if she Mayne had gotten some wisdom. Nope. She used the floor to set her bottom jaw against for leverage and leaned hard down on the bone as she bit down. The tooth gave way before the bone. So that cost some money for the dental plus extraction and antibiotics...sigh. Yes, rawhide is also dangerous. It can cause gastric blockages. Idk about uncut antlers but I got cut antlers lengthwise...and they are mostly safe until they get too small.

My house is SO small! The Dog bed is on the couch🙄 I step on a dog bed beside my bed in order to get up! There simply isn't enough room. It's good that my dog is small but I can't do anything about the space or the boxy layout of this rental. My new rescue is learning that I will be coming back and I do see progress in the 3 weeks she's been mine. She does chill while I am at work but busts a move when I get home. And every time I leave the room for the first few hours 🙄 but I make a point to come and go often for short intervals. And we have a snuggle time. She was SO alone for most of her life so I get it. TIME is on our side and she's not my first neglected rescue 💖

This has been hard for us, our dog is a year old, we adopted her 2.5 months ago and we’re trying to work on her schedule. She has a set eating, potty and bed schedule. And my husband has a set playtime with her after dinner. But I need a sliding schedule outside of that, I’d been keeping things so tight and specific that I haven’t been able to do anything else. It was very much like what you gave as an example lol. I was also always sitting with her on the floor. It was incredibly stressful for me. So I’m watching this video. Hope it helps us out lol

I hear so many positive trainers saying toys are only for you and your dog to interact with together so they associate all good things with you and are super excited to see you and i always felt uncomfortable with that mentality. I want my pup to also be able to entertain herself sometimes. I interact with her a lot and we have a schedule with napping and interaction but I'm also trying to teach her that while she hopefully thinks I'm super awesome great but also it's okay for me to be doing something without her and she can play with her toys on her own or hang out with a chewy or just relaxing.

Thanks for another great podcast. Your fantastic, model-canine, homeschool student Ethel is working on layers of learning-- focused on holding a down today.. Epiphany of the day, I am learning in layers too. I just listen and re-listen.

Hi Susan. I bought Crate Games the other day based off this vid. Absolute witchcraft. My 6.75 m/o pup just went into his crate of his own volition. He's sleeping in there right now with the door open. Why? Because I bought crate games and played a few on Monday. It's Saturday. I'm now doing the same as stage 1, 2 & 3 with the car door to get him more confident in the car so I can take him to cool places with me. I also pulled out a doggy bed of his from a cupboard where it had been living since Eddie the JRT decided to chew his way inside to get to that sweet, sweet stuffing! Having sewn it up, now it lives in the living room. So Eddie has 2 beds and a crate in the living room to chill on. He nearly had it in his mouth but he saved it by lying down like a good boy and giving me the cute eyes. He was so close to losing his new bed. You're an absolute gem. Thanks for what you do! Seeing Border Collies chill brings home how effective these methods are. My trainer loves your program too. Anxiety level just dropped, too.

I have no room for crates or beds.. live on a boat 🤔

My dog is used to chill - but only when I'm chilling. I can get up and get something in another room and come back and she'll stay chill, but the moment I get doing something more active like cleaning up, my dog follows me around, brings me her favorite toy, brings me stuff until I pay with her. I've started to tie her to the sofa where she lays down because I got tired of telling her to go back, but as soon as I untie her, she gets excited again. Also even when I'm chill, when the cat stops chilling or just goes for water, my dog wants to play with him. I've had her for two years (she was 9 months and my first dog so obviously i had a bad start) and it does not seem to get any better.

This is my issue... My days are just how Susan described with my 9 month old Aussie Shepherd - Service Dog In Training. I live in a tiny apartment (small bedroom and living area/kitchen combo) and he prefers the floor to his 2 beds. I only have room for his kennel aside from the two dog beds - no room for a pen. He whines for attention when not napping... he only naps 2x a day - but by 6-7PM he is asleep for the night. I need help getting him to chill more during the day.

Thanks for the video. I have a problem if I reward my dog while chilling, he things it is training time so he stands up imidiatly and starts following me. Same in bars, when he finally relaxes and I want to reward him I actually make him unrelax in a second by giving him a treat. Any tips on how to reward him without distracting his zen state?

My girls actually know how to chill. A border collie, husky mix, border collie lab mix and of course my mini dachshund that hangs out by me. But the three medium know how to chill and nap a couple times a day or more. But not when they’re excited, have to work on that. But I’m kinda chill too so. We chill together

Could I know where to get that blue bed, just love it !

I’m so thankful to find you’re channel. I have a quick question we just got a boy Rottweiler he’s 2 months and 24days but the only thing is I don’t understand is when we try to love on him or pick him up to put into kennel he turns really quick and will start growing and flop his head back and will try attacking us in the face .Usually most of the puppies I’ve seen are lovers we walk him and play with him in yard a lot but when he gets out of control he will start running through house and banging his head into walls

Hi Susan. I have a few questions about raw bones in the house. How long do you typically let your dogs chew them (ie 10 minutes)? Where do you store them in between “chew sessions”? Do you ever experience issues of bad smells from the bones? I have only given my dogs raw bones outside and never indoors. But I’m looking for great long lasting chew options that aren’t plastic, or harmful.

Hey there! Around 14:30, you mention that you release the dog from one bed, and reward when they get in the next b bed. My question is.... How does a release work if the dog went into the bed by choice, rather than on cue? Historically, when I've done shaping, the dog may get rewarded for a behavior that I like that they did without a cue, but if I didn't cue them, then technically they don't need to hear "break" to be released. How do you differentiate or not for that? Does that make sense? Thank you!!! Love this video!

Hi Jamie, if there is a cue for the bed (verbal, visual, context), then the release word is used, but if our dogs are on "their time" they can come and go from the bed as they please.

My 10 mth old border collie has suddenly become very hyperactive, barking at butterflies (amongst everything else) Im working on all your relaxation techniques which are working ( we are building the layers!) . However tug toy playing has become awkward as she now growls and thrashes the toy around as though she wants to kill it....and becomes manic again...I feel as though its building aggression. Have you any advice please?

Susan help! My puppy (8month golden retriever) is crazy for food. I can’t just set a bowl down for dinner and let him eat he eats so fast then throws up. Currently I am using dinner(just kibble)as training rewards, breakfast is mixed with raw and I don’t have an issue with him throwing up but he still eats it fast. How can I slow him down? He does this with treats too, I want to give him bones but I’m afraid he’ll try to eat the whole thing and choke
