I feel like one of the reasons you couldn't control the kids was cuz you're so empathetic and easy-going, they seemed to see you more as a loving friend rather than just a teacher :3

Well when I look back, the teachers who had the biggest impact on me, in terms of life lessons, we’re the teachers who were nice to me and respected me in a friendly manner.

Those kids adore you. They'll always remember you.

Your vids are so much more tolerable than most of the "foreigners abroad in asia" genre. Most are weirdly arrogant, or social outcasts in their home country and running from something etc You're pretty normal and your perspective is refreshing compared to the usual (usually a male) obdervstions of life abroad in asia which often degenerate into some axe grinding about the new culture

The very 1st person I started watching speak mandarin was Moses aka Laoshu. He became a reeeeaaallll piece of work imo. Lost a lot of his viewers due to making titles like "black man fingers asian womans mind with amazing mouth skills" and things of the like. It really made a lot of people cringe. And in one particular video where he was harassing a small asian woman in a library, he KEPT asking her about if she was married and if she was still happy in her marriage. TOTALLY UNCALLED FOR AND RUDE. Yes, she couldve just ignored him or walked away, but if you're a woman like I am, you have most likely dealt with this same behavior personally and you know the man will start to be nasty and rude if you ignore the harrassment. So that's probably why she sat there and tried to be nice. In any case, I definitely had to unsubscribe from his channel after those nasty titles kept flooding my feed.

Idk but watching you with those kids around I felt like you are a natural at this and teaching is your true calling. Maybe you're conflicted by people telling you to "get a real job" but honestly teachers, doctors and law enforcement workers are the most vital of all professions and the pandemic only drove that further home.

Thanks you. I didn't change schools so many times because of any particular reason. I just wanted to try living in different cities across China. The English teaching contracts are only 1 year.

@Oriental Pearl-when I taught in China in the mid-1980s you weren’t allowed to teach more than two years at any given school. The government feared that you would have too much influence over your students corrupting them with your western ideas if you stayed longer.

It's unfortunate that a lot of KZreadrs like to create their own narratives. Thank you for sharing your experiences (genuinely). Learning from each other's experiences is important to the development of society and totally underrated these days.

Yeah, I felt like a lot of the videos about teaching English on KZread were a little dramatic.

You're so mature for your age. Being in many different countries would've made you learn a lot more about the world. Your parents must be proud of you. I hope they are. I feel inspired. I'd love to go to Japan (and America) someday. Beautiful countries.

I totally agree: If you currently feel stuck doing something you don't like in your life: You always have options for a happy future if you make the change! You don't even have to move half-way around the world for a positive life change experience, sometimes it's just about changing jobs or making new friends!

I really love how honest you are in your videos. Really looking forward to future content like this. As a fellow expat, I like to see other people's genuine experiences in diferrent countries. And I agree with you on how hard it is being a teacher. Tried that out myself and gained a new respect for school teachers (and my mom, who has been a primary school teacher for over 30 years now).

I wouldn't consider my self a professional in teaching but one of the reasons to loose control is the number.... But i think to teach kids English as a foreign language while you have advanced Chinese skills is very useful at least you can communicate and understand their needs properly, and remember there is no experience meaningless in your life so enjoy every moment, build your personality and don't look only to the negative side of it 😊😊😊

Oriental Pearl Another Michigander here, too. (Traverse City.) I speak a few languages, and lived in Spain for a semester when I was going to the University of Michigan. It was an amazing experience, and one that I’ll never forget. Living abroad and learning new languages and all that goes with culture is such a huge eye-opener. I’m now thinking about learning Mandarin, because it’s absolutely fascinating to me; all my other languages are Germanic and Romance languages. Anyway, love your videos, great content!

My wife went to Western Michigan University to be an English teacher, she taught at Battle Creek, Michigan High school, a real challenge in an inner-city school. Even with impeccable classroom management skills, she quit, returned to school to study ASL/interpreting which is what she does now in colleges, hospitals, etc...She had to cut her own path which is what seems to be what you are doing. I enjoy you channel...great job!

Wow, so many names of places in Michigan. That takes me back lol. Sorry it was a hard experience for her. One of my friends also taught in the inner city for "Teach for America". She cried everyday when she came home. You have to be made from iron to handle being a teacher.

These are my favorite types of videos, the real talk. i appreciate your content, so i watch. There are only so many hours in the day, and there is only so much time one can dedicate to watching KZread, so we have to choose wisely. Oriental Pearl - I lived in the Irish Hills ☘️ and then Lansing during college. Of course :) I dont know people in Cincinnati definitely have a Kentucky-ish accent they also drag out their O’s. I think in Michigan the word dollar was pronounced, “dahler” but here in Cincinnati it’s pronounced, “DOLLer”. I just notice some words are different from Michigan. I think it’s funny when people think you have a Russian accent :)

@@OrientalPearl Let me ask you a question. I know that most Asian country require a Bachelor's to teach English. I am curious to find out if someone who has a Degree in let's say Culinary Art, if that will be accepted.

Absolutely love your videos!! I left a complimentary comment on your last video and wanted to expound a bit more. So many videos are "in your face" with a lot of phony preening, lots of annoying edits and cuts, and just coming across as shallow. I know xiaomanyc has brought you many new viewers. There is something refreshingly different about you, and the authenticity is a major part of it. Your speaking mannerisms and your style is so enjoyable, you have a certain grace about you. Superficial phoniness is found everywhere on social media, you come across as authentic and a human being of good character. You're definitely a throwback. I'd love to know how you got this way. I'm guessing you have good parents with a good value system.

Loved this video, especially seeing how happy you made those kids, that's what it's all about. As for your "real talk" I totally agree you should do YOU, don't worry about other KZreadrs and whatever content they are putting out there. Yes, on KZread a lot of people go for the "shock" factor and it will get them views and subs, but so will great videos & stories like this. Waiting for you to hit 10k subs...so happy I was here when you just passed 1k! Keep up the good content.

@@OrientalPearl I said the same thing with my channel. While everyone else does covers of other artists and blew up a bit from that, I kept it original. Covers aren't for me, so I stuck with my guns and happy I did, so you do the same!

I lived in Michigan for 3 years. So many people like you who have never left the state, they go Up North for every vacation, and to Grand Rapids when they want culture. Very nice to see someone who actually left.

@@OrientalPearl haha It's nice in the fall. I saw you said you were having trouble doing subtitles somewhere else. I wanted to recommend this process: -Finish editing your video -Build a subtitle file in the .srt or some other standardized format. Basically just type a time and subtitles as you go through watching your edited video. -Hard embed the subtitles into the video using something like virtualdub. Maybe it'll be easier than your current method

Oriental Pearl I totally agree with u. And what's more, teacher's status has been changed a lot. When we were young, we respected our teachers a lot. But now.... Thanks to lots of irresponsible parents and school leaders, it's stressful to teach. Hmmm For me, Teaching in Thailand is harder than in china because of no nap time😪, no break time 🚽between classes. What's more, the salary is not higher than in China. But Living in Thailand is cool🏝

I'm also an English teacher in Asia, in Taiwan to be exact. I also learned Chinese in a classroom environment and I can't tell you how jealous I am when I observe my Chinese teacher never needing to shout at us to get back at our seat, to focus, don't kick, don't run, don't do this, don't do that, etc. I thought, yes, teaching adults would be a lot more relaxing, but I'm the same as you. When I'm done with this teaching job next year, I'm never going back to teaching. Teaching is just not for me.

I feel you on that one. Many of my colleagues lost their voice at the end of the day. I know two that taught for years and did permanent damage to their vocal cords. Tough job!

I made it home after the magic three years (four in my case) in Japan! In pursuit of a creer, of all things. Now I have the dreaded office job in my home country and unrealistic dreams of retiring very early. I'll probably end up quitting in a couple years and go teach English again. Paid way less (especially in Japan like you said), but it was a better life. I'd love trying to teach in China actually, though I don't think my (Japanese) fiance would appreciate that idea very much. Thanks for sharing these. Wish I was as open as you interacting with people. What do you do now?

I understand what you mean! I didn't mention that I went back to the US after the first year, did marketing again and quit again. It's hard to be torn between two places. I am a grad student at Waseda now doing a semester exchange, but the semester is over and I can't go back to China because of the Coronavirus.

This is very motivating, I have an older cousin currently teaching english in south korea and here you were teaching in both china and japan. I understand there are pros and cons of the teaching job but I want to look into a career like that too. Taiwan would be my country of choice since i did study abroad there for 3 months

A warm video with love and kindness

"I felt a bit anxious driving my car in America, I had a few car crashes so I decided to leave and go to China on my own", said no woman feeling anxious ever, HA !. You are a bit of a trailblazer young lady. You already have more exciting storys to tell when older in just a few years of living than most have in a lifetime, and all because of travel . Wondeful watching you and the children interacting so warmly, you might not like teaching much as a profession, but those children would never know. Your like a beautiful kind chamelion, you blend in perfectly with your surroundings and become one with anyone around you . Girl power never came from a pop group it has always existed, and you are proof of this. You are very inspirational to girls/women, although i can imagine many parents not unlike yours thinking I'm not sure about that, my child living in a foreign country, well they're different to us aren't they?. Although you once again prove that basically we are actually quite similar, much more than we think anyway.

redtesta Michigan. And every single accident happened in the winter because of ice, snow, and messed up roads. I got hit when waiting at a red light multiple times because the car behind me slipped on ice. Yes, many of the other China/Japan vloggers out there don’t sit well with me. For many reasons, And the big youtubers doing that have gotten really comfortable in their position and are posting many “day at home” and “supermarket” videos. To be honest there is not a big difference between doing that in China/Japan and back in your home country.

@@OrientalPearl omg how miserable i understand. Yes, i was going to make the same statement, " comfortable" . Well, you're vids are refreshing and you explain a lot. You went in depth why you aren't teaching and the ramifications that affected the situation and why you aren't back in China. The one question i do have and it's in regards to the ' red envelopes" and i do know how that happens, since it's a no no to do that when you are teaching and you mentioned teaching on the side, could you accept that same situation but teaching on the side? I have traveled and sure, i enjoyed it but besides that (and i understand you are younger) what would be your plans say having a comfortable amount of money saved in your account, what would you like to do ultimately? Thank you for the response.

redtesta The school rules were that we could not accept red envelopes. Most of the parents would expect their kid’s grades to improve dramatically after you accept a red envelope. If you are a private tutor and are not giving out grades, I say go ahead and accept that envelope as your payment for tutoring. Nothing is free, you will have to help the kid a lot, but as a tutor you don’t have control over grades, so there are not any ethical issue there.

I taught in Japan for 13 years, mostly adults and adult volunteers (Peace Corps type) so it was easier. Also taught in Thailand, Kenya and Honduras, so I understand your frustration.

You didn't appear to have trouble controlling them but then again we only saw bits. Here in America, parents would fire a teacher the second they placed a hand on them. Like that video where you were teaching Charlie and he was trying to grab at your face so you grabbed his hand and moved it away from your face...some Americans (actually an annoyingly large amount of Americans...) would get upset and be like OMG HOW DARE YOU TOUCH MY CHILD 😂😂 I legit dont even feel okay taking pictures of my son when hes in a public space where other kids are, such as a park, because GOD FORBID their kid is in the background in the photo! I was hassled by a sickly paranoid badly mannered etc approx 20 year old Australian school teacher etc, also threatening to call the police, who was supervising her students in a public park, just because they were in the fairly distant background of my camera shooting of the park's playground and/or green grass. No doubt if I hung around to wait for the notoriously disgusting pigs, then I would have had no support, even though I was probably entirely legally allowed to photograph in a public place. Other similar incidents have happened, once with an Australian policewoman at a car accident, her being antagonistic and provocative, as usual. Similar also was somebody else in a public park wine festival in NZ where photos or videos were shot.

@rolf wow that had to be extremely annoying -_- yep that's the exact reason I dont even feel "safe" taking my son's photo at a public park. Someone's kid will be in the background and next thing ya know I'm gonna be forced to list as a predator 😂😂😂 I tell my husband "you take the pictures, please. If I do it, cops will be leaping from the trees with their damn jet packs to come get me".

Its 100% legal to take photos in any public area UNLESS that area has been bought out for the day by some specific party AND theyve placed signs to make everyone aware. I looked it up after Hilary Duff went off on some guy for taking photos during a kids soccer game. I mean...I get theres creeps out there...but your kids arent out here nude....and it's a public space...go somewhere private if u dont want anyone to see your them 😆😅🙃

My family doesn't really like the fact that I love learning Korean and love the culture and they don't really want to saport me with learning about it so when I watch your videos they make me so so happy. I went to Malaysia last year to see my Chinese friend from college that lives there. I loved it! I want to go back there and make a Speaking Chinese video there one day. I have some video footage from the trip last year, but I haven't made it into a movie yet.

I agree with you about a lot of videos being arrogant! Whenever my boyfriend puts on a J-Vlogger I tell him to turn it off, hahaha. It's nice to hear you talk positively and welcoming about your experiences :)

I'm so glad people are enjoying these non-prank related Chinese videos too. I want to show everyone real life here.

When I started class in New York, around 11-12 grade, some American kids are so disrespectful. I mean like my math teacher cares about my classmate sitting in front of me and she always asking why didn't he do his homework. Instead of saying sorry or I can't do it because I didn't understand it in a humble way, he just straight shout some nonsense (I'm not good picking up English at that time yet. So, I'll just call it nonsense) or sometimes she'll just ignore her. I mean he is not a kid anymore he is a teen already and if he needs help why not just go to after class free tutoring? I mean I'm not a native English speaker but I manage to go to math tutoring every Monday to Thursday. Lots of students here keep saying that the class was so hard but they never really think I feel the same way as they do. They've got an advantage here cause they have a free lunch here in New York, native English speaker, no need to have a uniform just to go get in public school, free public transportation and most of all the tutoring are free. So, if you messed up in a particular class you can made it up with your teacher. There's no need for them to say that the school is a crap because this they've got everything that most students around the world most probably don't. There is lots of thing I hate about the Philippines schooling system and Filipino personality of course but nonetheless I only met few that had no interest in school but if they were asked by a teacher to do as they've said they will still do it. No questions, they must. It's like what they've said is true? That there's always an Asian better than you? So, when I look back at my classmates who doesn't care about the class or teacher and disrespect them, I would just say it in my thoughts "dude, you have all the opportunities that other kids doesn't. It's not for the teachers sake, it's for your own benefits!". I really want to say that words to them but my English skills aren't that quite good. So, I just let it slide but now I had more knowledge about the language I might be able to say it in college if I got a chance to getting into one. Your scenario it's because you're teaching children and no matter where you go they're gonna be spoiled at a point. Children are fragile. So, you'll gonna take care of them as if you were holding your brand new phone. Be patient, I know you're doing your best and loved your job. Children is still exploring the ethics of life and you can't force it to them but an alternative you can inspire them. -Best luck of you Ms. (Name) Oriental Pearl! Sorry, I'm new to the channel😅

I think teaching is a challenge in China too. Kids misbehave a lot as you can see in the video. I can imagine that there are a lot of challenges for teachers in America too. I'm glad that you found this channel! I'm new to KZread.

@@OrientalPearl yes, there's no doubt that teaching in Asia will be quite difficult. Most Asian parents are strict especially in China and this attributes trough their kids personality. But come to think of it, the more they behave like an annoying little brats means you have a great relations with them because they act like you're their second home and they wanted to be comfortable with you. If you're a strict teacher the entire class would probably behave as you wish but there's still some won't. I myself is a clown class when I was in Elementary. I noticed when a strict teacher is coming into class, everybody behaves and doesn't not talk but of course I'm a class clown and joining in with my cousin who also a class clown we're always get yield out 😂 and she let us stand in a corner till the end of her class. Well this based on my experience, I can't argue enough because I'm not a teacher and haven't been to China. So, you just probably got worsed😁. Sorry! I am 1/3 Chinese and my Mom enrolled me in a Chinese preschool when I was a kid. I didn't like it because when my classmate is stabbing with a pencil to the other kids they report in to the school home room teacher but the teacher doesn't even bother. I got curious so they push me towards that stabbing kid and the teacher who doesn't even talk in my language does not care a bit. Since, she can't understand me when I told her that there's a kid stabbing with pencil and me and the other victims shows our wounds to her, she just called my grandmother to let her deal with me since she is a total crap. After I told my grandmother what happened, I moved into another school and ended up with me cousin who I mentioned earlier. You're actually better because you've care enough about them and give them the proper love they've need. So, always remember to don't give up! You're probably the best teacher in the school😁

How long did it take to learn Chinese/Japanese? Had you been learning it before you left the US. So 8 years or more

The key is to immerse yourself in the culture/country. You are hearing, reading, and writing that language 24/7. If you study in a school outside the culture/country, you have limited exposure to it. By the time you get back to it, you would have already forgotten most of what you learned last week.

Oriental Pearl You did a great job learning Mandarin. I know it’s not easy to acquire a new language in a new country without having a solid foundation first.

I have been watching more and more of your videos for the last week or two. They are remarkable, and so are you. (I’ve heard you make only one observation that I can’t quiet agree with. No matter, not a big deal.) The content of your videos, the production, your personality, all first rate. You are fantastic! You make me laugh, too, which is no small thing.

What are your thoughts on focusing on a language as one of your main aspects? Like for example I just submitted my applications for University and my focus was Chinese studies as honestly I am not a really good person when it comes to studying and education so I had to stop pursuing my other choices. Now obviously the 2 main career paths are teaching and translating, for me I just couldn't be a teacher and I don't enjoy translating but at the same time i want to use my multiple languages as an advantage :/ Also keep going with your channel the content and quality gets better each video! 加油 :D

Thanks, I'm improving slowly. I considered translating too, but it doesn't pay as well as I thought. If you have some other skills like computer skills or business knowledge you can work for any kind of company that does business with China. You don't have to limit yourself.

Another lovely young lady with a angel type nature,hopefully you will find the right man and have your own kids to pine and care for you. 😁👍🤣

Ugh why do I relate to your story so much. One year in corporate world (business development) and I am sick of how pointless my days felt. I quit my job and I am studying Chinese full time. So tempted to just fly there and try a new life.

Wow, we are like the same person lol. What's stopping you from coming over? Also, if you do come expect challenges that will make you doubt your decision, but stick through it. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Kids are kids everywhere... fun watching these kids enjoy life,, and you must be a wonderful teacher, they loved you so much. Great positive influence. I hope their experience with you lasts a lifetime.

I went back 2 years later unannounced and walked into their classroom. They went nuts. Those are the moments I kick myself for not bringing a camera.

That's why I work with security! People HAVE to do as I say regardless of their social status or make me company all the way to the EXIT! Comfortably if necessary! I'm just an invisible part of the decor in the side of the property and pays better xD maybe I'm not a people person... Nah maybe I've just met the wrong ones xD

I’ m from Japan and got a private license of teaching Japanese. In China, there are a lot of Japanese teaching jobs and I want to live there for one or two year to learn and experience the completely different culture. But if I do it, my career will be over and I don’t think teaching Japanese to foreigners is a proper career even though I found a job in a national university over there.

I know many Japanese teachers in China. They used to teach me Japanese in China lol. Some have been there for 20 years. Usually they have some frustrations with the school they work for though.

Michigan set the standard for English? Not England? LOL. It's alright. Most Americans think this way. I threw most Americans for a loop when I told them people can tell them they are Americans by their accent.

@@OrientalPearl There are only a few words that would give a Canadian away. Word like "about" is pronounced "aboat", not "aboot" like in the movies.

@@bbkmm1 it is true though. The American Standard Pronunciation (like what you hear in CNN) is the standard accent for business english. The British maybe the original one but it is harder to learn for most non native speakers. There's also the media. American media is surely more widely consumed than British media so the exposure to it is more. Americans maybe known for their arrogance in a lot of things but their general accent is really the standard (in BE).

I've thought about teaching English abroad to be able to travel but I don't think I'd do well controlling kids either. About the content, just make the videos you want to make.

That's because the lower Peninsula accent of Michigan (especially Detroit) and Chicago (as well as Buffalo, Syracuse and some other Inland American cities) are basically the same, because they've all gone through the same vowel shift called the Northern Cities Vowel Shift 😜

This is an inspiring video. I'm just in Tokyo one year for work at university since february, I was not interested to learn japanese or stay more but after few months I'm really enjoying to discover this culture (despite the virus thing). You make me really think about staying more. And discover other Asian countries. Thank you for this kind of video.

Thank you so much! I did debate and competitive speaking for 4 years in college. I was one of the lower people on the team, but I learned a things or two from doing it.

I heard that teaching Chinese kids is difficult because they have a "little prince" entitlement mentality.

Our experience was very similar to yours and I do believe it’s Mid West nature to be so down to earth. We just get it.
