Japan Culture Shock: My Top 5 Shocks Living in Japan

What's it like to move to Japan? I first visited Japan in 2015 from China when I was living there. I decided to move to Japan after that and have lived here for 2 years so far. Despite having lived in Asia for many years, Japan remains unique to me. There have been many adjustments and culture shocks since moving here and I want to share them with you. Whether you want to move here or visit Japan for a trip, I hope this helps you prepare.

Yeah ghosting is kind of a thing here in Japan because people don’t like direct confrontation, and for the same reason, people on the receiving end also kind of accept it in some cases. But that thing (not showing up after hours of train ride) happened to you in this video is whole on another level! That is so disrespectful and unacceptable even in Japanese standards! (because wasting someone’s time is viewed as one of the biggest sins in Japan) Probably that person is just a scumbag.

  • @DragakuRandom

The ghosting issue is a problem here in America as well. Especially in the dating scene. At least he told you he wasn't showing up instead of just not showing up, leaving you wondering if something happened to him.

Thanks Greg. I was pretty bummed out about the whole thing, but like we talked about on Instagram, it's not the first time I has trouble with that person. I'm really hesitant to do videos with people I met on the internet and KZreadrs. I've had some disappointing encounters. Some of them wasted my time doing interviews with me or having me make a video with language learning advice and never posted it. It's not cool to waste people's time like that.

I've been disappointed by mostly everyone in my life. So, I've just learned that being my best self is all the friendship I need. I'll always be kind, but I won't seek that feeling of yearning for a friend anymore. People sometimes just simply don't know how to be honest. I'm very blunt and I see things for what they are, one can articulate that without hiding the truth and making someone feel worthless or "less-than". Sorry you had to experience this. You helped me recently on some Kanji, you have a good heart. Don't let others bad hearts stain yours. - A fellow supporter of your channel and all your endeavors.

Being “polite” or “shy” or “non confrontational” is bull crap. If u decide u want to unfriend someone for whatever reason, tell him. Arranging a meet up then no showing & ignoring all texts & phone calls is cowardly at best, evil at worse. I mean u know u are not planning to show up so why arrange a meet up? Jerk probably will leave his/her spouse standing alone at the altar too 🙄

Oh, I could hear the disappointment in your voice when your friend didn't show up.😕I had a trip back to Japan planned for this month (I had to cancel it) and my friend wanted me to get an international drivers license to drive one of their family cars. When I lived in Japan, I didn't drive at all so I was a bit worried about it. I'm used to wide roads over here, and pulling forward into parking spots. People here can also spend a lot on their fur babies. As far as crowded trains, I once got on a train after a fireworks show in Yokohama and it was so packed that I could not move at all!

Then the mini series cemented my belief that I had to visit. I visited most of sites of William Adams life and journeys in Japan, and as a result experienced most of the issues you highlighted in this video. I have driven in many countries but except for the highways in Japan, I'm afraid of many of the town roads, because a two way road isn't wide enough for one vehicle and a bicycle. Thank god for the efficient train/subway/tram system. I look forward to your future adventures.

Another great vid Anming. Soo interesting. Still firmly believe it would make a good film/ TV documentary, or at least a travel blog for Japanese Tourist/ Culture Board!! Thought you could have explored the food a lot more. Prob justifies a 1 hour special on food alone (yes please ! ) Thought the voice over towards the end was really good. How about a trip to the smaller towns? Or did you do that already? ( not seen all your vids ) Keep them coming !

I lived in Japan for a few years, mainly in Yokohama near Chinatown. Spent most of my time working and going to meetings all over place. My view was great, I lived on the 30th floor and could see the whole harbor with Rainbow bridge off to the right. And on the other side of the my place you can see Fuji-san off in the distance. When I could get a day off, a lot of the time I'd go down to Chinatown area and hangout around the harbor area. Since I don't speak Japanese very well it. Really didn't matter because Japanese in the city can speak english, but they're too scared to talk. Thanks for the video 🇺🇸🗻

One uncomfortable thing I noticed about my time in Tokyo was people moving away from me and my French, German, and British colleagues when we entered the subway. We noticed sometimes when we took a seat (alone or with eachother), people next to us would get up and chose a new seat away from us. We were all mostly based out of Shanghai, and it was never the case there nor our respective hometowns. Not something necessarily bad, but I'd be lying if I said it didn't make us feel unwelcome. Any insight on this?

You're right. That happens to me sometimes. If you were talking on the train it may have been because of that. But I ride alone and I'm silent, yet people still avoid me sometimes. I think it just throws people off to see a foreigner sometimes even in Tokyo. In those cases I just have a little extra room on the train.

Living in a place where Tohsaka is projected in public places (see 4:38) would be a dream come true :) Back to serious matter, great video! Positive about japan is also the cleaness of public spaces and the very high standard of professionalism in customer service! I was also pretty surprised during my holidays in Tokyo that cashless payment is pretty much nowhere accepted. Kind of awkward for a country that is stereotipized as being super-technological and futuristic.
