Foreigners Living in Japan: What's Everyday life like for us in the Tokyo Suburbs?

What's it like living in suburban Japan as a foreigner? How do local people react when they hear a foreign language? The answer is: a bit surprised sometimes depending on the situation, but life has been good here for my roommates and I. Recently I changed my attitude about being looked at funny sometimes and decided to have a little fun with the whole thing. This has made my experience here even more fun and helped me gain a lot of friends... not to mention it has made for some pretty cool videos. I hope everyone enjoys Japan as much as my Chinese roommates and I.

    It is absolutely amazing how well the customers are being treated in Japan! They treat them like royalties, 1:51!!! I was blown away by how many times they apologized for making you wait for your cake!! I always admire their ultimate level of hospitality! This is a good representation of customer service in Japan. The customer is treated like a king or queen.

  • @Pattoe

    @Pattoe

    I'm fascinated by how different cultures show different ideals when it comes to customer service. In the UK its important to break through the formality and create a very informal relationship with customers (obviously, depending on businesses this is different). But in a bakery the staff would try to speak to you like you're a good friend, not a customer. All the bowing and apologising and manners would likely upset a customer in the UK. I, however, think its very sweet.

  • @sighfive9677

    @sighfive9677

    Actually they are not really apologizing. "Omatase shimashita" is a patterned phrase when making a customer wait ("Sorry to keep you waiting" is not the accurate translation, it's like "Here you are" in a nice way) and a little bowing is just an usual manner when seeing the customer off(so it's not really a big thing). And those Japanese people working at shops are like hotel clerks or waiters/waitresses at a nice restaurant(those people universally treat customers nicely as a professional, don't they). Also if you go to a small shop where the owners themselves treat customers or go to the same shop number of times and get acquainted with them, and if you like to have a little chat, they'll probably treat you more like a friend.

    Curious, have you ever caught out Chinese people in Japan speaking about you ? I also speak Chinese, although barely pushing intermediate, and it happened to me. I stepped into an elevator and there were 3 or 4 students in there and when they saw me they stopped their convo, and one of them said to the others "外国人" (in Chinese), and they were looking me up and down. I then said in Chinese "actually you're also foreigners here" - and they almost fell over in embrassment. We all then laughed it off and they threw the usual "how do you know Chinese" etc. questions at me, but it was a rather interesting experience (actually one of them was a Japanese guy who knew Chinese). Obviously it would have happened to you in China, but how about here ?

    @@OrientalPearl Very much different from the mid-1970s to 1980s. My humble experience and thoughts: Japan has a distinct, fascinating culture that is unlike any other countries, and will leave a lasting impression with you! This is part of what makes it such a captivating country to visit and it is certainly one of the most unique countries in the world! Japanese culture has many different uniquely interesting aspects, both modern and traditional, such as: cuisine (I love the food!), architecture, performing arts, fashion, anime, manga and Geisha. On the one hand Japanese culture is immersed in a rich history and deep traditions dating back thousands of years; on the other Japanese society is one that is in a continual state of rapid change, and is continuously evolving with new trends in fashion, technology and pushes the boundaries of what is possible. At present, the culture of Japan stands out as one of the leading and most prominent cultures around the world, mainly due to the global reach of its popular culture. If you are looking for something different and a culture like no other you’ll certainly find that in Japan!
