Seems like we need a clicker for them to perfect it and make it easier I’m guessing over time the clicker fades away ?

Hi, I was excited to see this advice because I hadn't seen these techniques before, but I'm still getting no further with Kitty. I've taught him plenty of other tricks and he learns fast, but we've hit a wall with this. I quite easily taught him to lie down, even though it's not a natural thing for him to do, even before seeing the technique with the arch of the leg, but the problem is that he will only go down to what I think you would call "the sphinx position". Even luring him under a very low leg he still won't go onto his side, so I really don't know how I will get him to "relax his hip". I've tried moving the treat towards his back leg, but that just makes him sit up again and turn around. Also, even though he's very amenable, he is not at all interested in me trying to 'manually' put him into a certain position, which is what other people advise to do (i.e. push him down, push him onto his side - that stuff is no good). Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Will he relax on his side if you brush or pat him? Try that out of the context of training but have your clicker handy. Make sure you are practicing on something very soft. Also, try with a lickable treat, like Churu Purée; as he licks the treat, he may relax into the position. If these suggestions don't work, please consider posting a video in our online class so I can see your hand position.

@@CatSchool Yes he will do that sometimes. I'm trying to picture it now. If he just happens to be sat in his 'sphinx' pose then patting/stroking might not often make him relax onto his side. If he's already on his side then the same thing will make him stretch out and roll over and all sorts... I know what you're thinking now - wait for him to be lying on his side and then turn that into a training session... like it!

@@Trippitaka2 i don’t know if you read this, but how did it work out? I’ve got the same Sphinxiness. Mine will either lay down straight or curved, there’s no change in between.

@@devriesheidi Hi Heidi. Yes we got there in the end, but it was just really really slow going. This was very much the toughest trick. One thing that had some success is just waiting until a point until he was laying on his side anyway and then rushing to give him a treat. Eventually he got there. It took tiny bits of coaxing to get him to roll over. Even when he knew exactly what he was doing he still wasn't keen on that, haha.

  • @LivingTheMusicLife

From what I've read about clicker training cats it's advised to start by doing short (about 5min) sessions every day. Once your cat has learned that the clicker means a reward they may be more motivated to train longer. If your cat doesn't want to continue after you've trained for a couple minutes that's okay. It should be fun for both you and the cat so if your cat gets bored after a while you shouldn't try to force it to continue because it will no longer be fun for them.

What tips do you have for helping teach my cat to use a soft mouth when taking treats? My boy (a black cat, just like Jones!) has a tendency to bite-and hard!!-when I feed him directly from my fingers, which makes it difficult to teach luring tricks this one.

Hi! I have been trying to teach my kitten tricks for so long, but she does NOT care about the food. If it’s too hard for her to figure out, she just gives up. Even when trying to teach her how to sit, she just wouldn’t follow the food above her head. When teaching her to fist bump, the food wasn’t easy to figure out how to get so she gave up. PLEASE help! I don’t know if she just doesn’t care that much about food or what.
