Unless they are ill, I don’t think it’s ever too late to teach an animal something new. I once taught my 17 year old cat to sit on command. I regret never getting it on video. I miss her so much

Thank you so much!!! After using your method my cat now presses her buttons successfully. We had them since April 2021 and she ignored them whatever I did. Now she is pestering me day and night, already starts combining them after only using them for about three weeks. Without you, I'd never had the joy of hearing "I love you" on Valentines Day while having coffee in the morning. So thank you from the bottom of my heart!

I am going to have to try again with her method! Have had my buttons for over a year and my cat just ignores them. She understands what they mean (it was a food button, and she comes running when i press it lol), but she has never pressed it herself. I have the larger buttons, I may try getting these smaller ones instead

@@Aryiea.x Maybe she would respond to another word, like play or her favourite toy or any other activity she is keen on like bird watching. I mean she knows you are feeding her anyway, so why bother, but being able to tell you to play with her could do the trick. Good luck!

Wish I had known about these sooner but it's too late now. He was the world's most intelligent cat. I would have loved to know exactly what he was thinking &/or trying to tell me but I believe our bond was strong enough that communication between us was on a telepathic level. @jemima222 You have my deepest condolences for the death of your cat. I wish so much that they could have more time with us, they just don't get long enough. I'm not sure I'll ever get another cat cause that's all it would be......just a cat. Vader was a once in a lifetime cat that taught himself how to hop-up on my shoulders when he was about 4 or 5 years old without any training by me or coaxing him with treats. He did it on his own because that's how much he loved me. What I would give/do to have 1 last "Hop-up" to feel his hair & whiskers on my face & feel his wet nose on my cheek & maybe even one last suckle on my earlobe like he did since a baby right up to the day he had to leave🖤 I don't think I'll ever know a greater love as long as I live😭

When I was a kid, we had 4 cats. Always wanted to communicate with my first friendsat this level. The future is so wonderful. Thanks for helping people bridge this communication gap.

Honest: first 10 seconds of the video, I was thinking "oh boy this is gonna be dumb". I'm sorry I jumped to that conclusion. This was actually extremely well done, very interesting to watch, and you have a good presentation style. Liked and subscribed!

I have had many cats all throughout my life and rescued them for 25+ years. I can tell exactly what they are thinking and even predict what they will do and what they want the great majority of the time. I would still love to have the buttons to know and understand them better and they can tell me if they are hurting, or need something I don't understand. Plus, I would like and enjoy having a two way conversation more clearly. I love everything about cats and so does my son, who has never lived a day in his 16 years without one in his life. We are a family. 😊 I love ALL animals, but just love cats the most.

I've had cats my whole life and grew up around lots of them, too - my parents treated them like they were my siblings, LOL. I believe cats are insanely intelligent and I just stumbled across BilliSpeaks and I'm just finding it hard to grasp how anyone is sure they are able to translate emotions with their pets? I just find that such a leap. I believe pets have them, I just find it really hard to believe we can train them to express them via buttons is all.

We’ve had two buttons about a week. He hit one a couple times last night but intermittent of my pressing it. Thanks so much for the paw target reminder. And that it could take a couple months. He’s a dog and seems to be a little wary of them since they talk. Also check out the talking guinea pigs!! I was astounded!

I'm thrilled with the your videos - you do such a great job both training Justin and sharing tips and techniques! Thank you! I've had the same problem trying to motivate a cat that isn't food motivated, but I found a solution and want to share in case it helps someone else get creative! I truly had to think about what IZZY values. She is highly motivated to lay on my shoulder and be solidly patted, like when you're burping a baby. We call it a Thump because "pat" sounds too much like "pet". She is crazy about this and begs any way she can think of for me to "thump" her. (That sounds awful, doesn't it? Lol!) We had already associated the sound (a sing-song repetition of thump, thump, thump, thump) during the many hours I've previously spent thumping her to her heart's content. I could call her and sing it, and she would come running. With her hanging over my shoulder, it was a challenge to figure out how to put the button within reach and provide stability on the back so it could be depressed. I ended up just holding it securely in my hand to the side of my shoulder. Every time she pawed at it (to explore it), I modeled the behavior and patted her back for 30-60 seconds. Every time she tried to lick my nose or face to beg for more, I redirected her to the button. She immediately recognized the sing-song sound, and she is SO motivated to get thumps that she associated them with the button right away. At the beginning, she activated the button by rubbing her cheeks on it, pulling it with her claws, or head bumping it. I rewarded all of them and modeled pushing the button. I had to gently pull her head back a few times and encourage the paw. She got it the same evening that we started! Thinking that it might be a fluke, I waited until she had solidly repeated the behavior for about 4 days before declaring success. She very much knows that pushing that button gets more thumps, and literally continues pushing it over and over. One evening, after 2 hours of thumping her and stopping every minute or so, I finally said, "All done!" and put the button away. She already knew all done from treat time. Previously, she insisted on being on my shoulder and would cling to me hysterically if I tried to move her to my lap. (She's a bit of a drama queen.) She is motivated enough to push the button that I've been able to reposition her down to my lap by moving it down. I am now limiting thumping sessions to about an hour at a time - typically while watching TV. Since I stop every minute or so, she gets lots of repetition to help her remember. She really wants to chew the hex tile and the buttons, so I gently put my hand between her mouth and the button or tile and every once in a while we have to take a break. I have put the "brush" button on the tile, and she randomly presses it. I just model/reward whichever button she hits. She likes both, but I don't think she has figured out yet that each button is eliciting the different responses.

This is helping me so much!! I suddenly had the opportunity of a lifetime to get a second hand FP soundboard. That was a dream most likely not to come true and suddenly I find myself setting up a board!!! I have big future thought about this for over a year now and now I have 6 buttons and I want to be as efficient as I can! I'm teaching the cat hand signs and speech, and show me what you want. It's working, outside is by the door, food is cupping your hand into a beak and pointing to your mouth, water is making your fingers into a walking person but only using one finger and wiggling it pointing downward. So if I'm getting something for her I go to her water bowl before i pick it up and do the hand sign, say the word, and pick what I am getting it for her. It seems to work.

Awh, wish i had known about this earlier.😅 We had such a smart cat in the family. Started in his last year (17) trying to test out if I could make him sit and give paw. My parents were so suprised when he learned to do it. I bet he would have loved this! Oh btw, he got deaf as he got so old, so to try to make him sit and give paw I did hand gestures together with saying it. But hey it worked. He was the most loud and talkative cat we ever had. So I wonder if this would have helped him express himself even more. Or maybe it would even tone down his meows haha Prob gonna try this on the next cat I get

Amazing information. I have just ordered the fluentpet buttons and I am going to try this out with my 4-month old Siberian kitty. I am also doing clicker training with him which he is responding well to so I think this would be a step up for him to help us understand what he is feeling.

Thanks for your recommendation on fluentpet! I just got a baby chihuahua mix and was struggling to find buttons that were small enough

I had taught my last cat more than half a dozen tricks using similar association tactics by using vocal cues as well as hand signals, so he learned the distance between shake, fist bump, and high five while giving him treats as rewards. What's similar in this video is his first trick took about 2 months, and during that time you feel really silly trying to teach a cat, most people don't look at them as trainable. I kept working at it and the day he put his paw up to shake and learned his first trick felt so amazing. Eventually we had sit, shake, high five, fist bump, and up high. He also knew food, treats, outside, etc. All in all he knew 10 or 15 words. But what is fascinating is those words worked by having me ask him and trying to gauge the enthusiasm in his response. This system is eye opening that there are tools out there that would let your cats communicate back to you. What I'd love to know sometime and maybe you have another video on it is how you associated advanced words and feelings like sad. I think it's fairly straightforward to associate behaviors, i.e. a dog or cat who will shake for a treat, but I'm totally lost on how to get a pet to indicate feelings and really reach a depth most people don't realize pets can actually have. This is fascinating stuff and while cats can't speak words, the buttons really seem to be briding the gap.

Well here is your first negative. I have tried paw training with treats, tuna, chicken and meat baby food. My cats are not interested in any of it. One of my cats is laser crazy but won't go near a button. They respond when I say the words they know but I can not get either of them interested in buttons. What would you suggest?

I started paw target training with my cat today and it works very well. Though little bits at a time is key cause I noticed her getting really frustrated so after she touched the target just a few times she got food and pets and it calmed her down. She's a smart cat though it only took a few minutes for her to catch on.

Just found your channel and very impressed! Really appreciate the resources and the advice on working with our feline family. Have been thinking about getting buttons for our cat but have been undecided because I’m worried what she might say to me 😂. She is definitely a daddy’s girl. I will probably end up getting them for her. Like someone else said, it will be great to know how they are feeling health wise.

I am considering trying to begin to teach my kitten tricks. He just doesn't enjoy your average ordinary treats - although a food button can help with stopping the free feeding and let him tell me when he is hungry; plus an outside button is the perfect chance to try out those cat backpacks to try out local nature trails. It could be an intriguing video documentation series, considering Hobbes is less than one year old; I only seen videos and websites of older cats using the buttons - so perhaps I have a new project for the new year to include ourselves with this recent pop science trend. It's pretty clear to me what my cat wants almost all the time. I'm not sure how buttons would help. But maybe not all cats are as direct? Or all humans as observant. But if he wants to play, he sits by the toy cupboard, or brings me a ball, or "bops" me and runs away. If he wants me to find him, he hides and chirrups. If he wants out or upstairs he sits by the door and maybe meows if I'm slow. If the litter box needs cleaning, he looks at me as he walks past and squeaks. If he really wants me to look at him and pay attention, he uses a particular vocalisation that goes "ee-oo" (I joke that's my name now). If he wants cuddles he comes for them, or sits on my keyboard until I pick him up. If I'm working too long he will sit on my keyboard until I go and sit down. (He doesn't want my attention, he will usually sit elsewhere. I'm just not "allowed" to work). If he's hungry he'll grab my leg and then lead me to the kitchen, maybe meows if he's really hungry. Or starts obviously hunting for food. If he wants me to pet him he'll look super cute, maybe show his belly (he actually likes belly rubs) gently grab my hand until I stroke him, keep grabbing it back if he wants more, pushes it away when he's had enough. Or moves away and curls up. If it's time to get up, it's a gentle pat on the face. There's probably more, but it's all easy. He knows a good few words and some tricks. He's an outdoor born cat that just randomly showed up starving in my hedge when he was about 9 weeks old. I guess all the "cleverness" to make a human take you in and look after you is a real survival skill! He took 3 days to learn most tricks.

Looking forward to your videos! I’ve enjoyed following Justin on Instagram. I’ve been thinking about trying buttons with my 13 year old cats and 11 year old dog, at least things like “water” and “outside” to start - we have two young kids so sometimes it takes us a while to notice someone sitting patiently by the water bowl. 😅 But also because of the young kids I’ve been concerned about my ability to be consistent with the teaching. All the “talking pets” I see on Instagram seem to belong to people without kids in the house, which has made me wonder about time/energy investment to see success. Either way, I’ll enjoy watching your next ones. :)

Thank you!! Justin reminds me to feed him all the time hah. You’re right, the only parent I can think of on social media is The Chatty Lab, although her daughter is a bit older! Since I’m not a parent it’s hard to say, but I think if your goal is just a few words it would be worth a try, especially with your dog - the parts that required the most consistency in my experience were getting Justin to physically press the button (cats tend to be harder), and encouraging him to make more advanced presses (sentences, answering questions, etc). But teaching a dog to press a button to go outside, for example, is pretty similar to teaching them to ring a bell to go out, if that sounds more doable!

Your cat understands, hit buttons, get positive reinforcement. That's it. We haven't even been able to teach other apes how to use simple sentences.

Great video! I have a couple of questions: 1) How many buttons do you recommend getting to start out with? 2) Could you teach a cat and a dog to use the same set of buttons? My dog loves to play and will keep bringing me toys until I have a little pile of them beside my chair. One of my cats also loves to play, and has a unique meow when she finds a toy she wants to play with. If she’s farther away I’ll call back “Here I am,” when I hear that meow, but if she knows she’ll use it as she runs up with the toy in her mouth and drops it at my feet. Because of the similarity in their behaviors, I feel like they could both learn to use a “play” button pretty quickly. (They also like each other a lot, and I can’t help wondering if they would start using the button to bridge the interspecies communication gap with each other, too. I’m imagining them standing on either side of the button taking turns asking the other to “play.”) The only problem is her favorite toys aren’t durable enough to survive being chewed by a puppy. It would be cool if I could teach him to be more gentle with them so they could play together. Thanks!
