ONCE?!?! ONLY ONCE?!?!?! good for you.
A few comments: 1. You don’t need a clicker. You need any short sound that is consistent (you’ll make it the same way every time) and distinctive (you’ll never make it in any other context). I trained my cats by making a short high-pitched “boop!” noise. You can use words, but cats are not as good at understanding human languages as people are, so the specific words may not be as distinctive from all of the other words you use in your everyday life. 2. Training cats to come running to you expecting treats at a particular sound (I use “pss pss” for this) is a basic safety measure. If they get outside, or if you really need to find them ASAP because you’re late for the vet appointment, having a way to get them to come when called is super-helpful. 3. Another really important concept from operant conditioning that dog clicker trainers use that I don’t see mentioned here is “variable ratio reinforcement.” Once you get the cat very used to the idea that the sound means that they will get a treat, you can start gradually dropping it back wind *not* giving a treat every single time you make the sound. It works like a slot machine - they never know when it will pay off but it pays off often enough that they keep coming back, and you have less difficulty with satiation. The sound or the petting or the play becomes the stand-in for the treat itself. Variable ratio reinforcement is actually *more* effective than constant reinforcement.

I clickertrained my cat. We both loved it! 💙 Once I took care of some friend's chicken for a week and I clickertrained one hen - I called her Hjördis. It worked really well. We both liked it. The other day I visited the hens and guess who came running, Hjördis! She still remembered one year later and evidently has good vibes about the whole thing. 💕

@@mygirldarby Yes I had pet chickens as a kid, who ignored their coop to roost in the tree it was under! every evening there was a procession as they hopped on the coop, then a low hanging branch, then hopped higher and higher to their preferred branches. And then if you got up early enough you could see them jump out of the tree with their wings spread to help them! I had growing up a piece of paper on my door, "Have you hugged a chicken today?" My brother found it in I think a magazine and cut it out and taped it there! Made me so happy. Wonderful wonderful wonderful creatures. Saw yesterday (and last week) a truck loaded (tightly) with chickens on their way to slaughter :( Clearly there's a chicken farm (an intensive one too) to the north of where I live, and then a slaughterhouse to the south........it's heartbreaking seeing it :( But yeah, I could talk for days and tell stories about my dear little chickie friends. Even my friends from growing up still remember them vividly and fondly (well, fondly for most of them! Cookie didn't like too many people 😅 He actually only liked me, I think because he associated me with his rescue...two kids were hunting him and this other rooster with BB guns, and uh we took them?? He sat on my lap - I was 9 - the entire car ride home and just seemed stunned and stared at me in shock. After the shock wore off, he decided he liked to greet people by erm having a quick fight?? He was a gorgeous fellow though, absolutely huge, I suppose a bantam but not sure his breed as I've never seen his coloring since). eeep I did it, babbled about the chickens 🙈😍🐔🥰

Quarentine is the best time to try out clicker training haha. I taught my cat sit, high five, low five, and 'stop' so she pauses in place. I had roommates confront me about not wanting her in the kitchen, shooing didn't work, but clicker training did. She know's exactly where the perimeter is to not step into the kitchen, now she leaves me alone when I prep her food too.

@@lauravanbakel3853 I have to start reinforcing it again because she tries to push boundaries. Hard to explain but I stood at the edge of the kitchen, she already knew to come when I called her name, but then held up my hand for her to stop and blocked her off. So when she stopped, or sit (which she knew by then) , I click, toss the treat away for her to go run after it. Then I’d call her back again and repeat. Little by little she figures out the gesture/ word meant and then I stepped back and add more distance over time so she saw I was asking her to stop at the same spot, and that’s the line she can’t cross when I say stop with the gesture. Also my cat is suuuuuuper food motivated. So that helps.

@Hal Verde I saw your response to my comment, but can't find it to reply directly there 😂 I bet you are correct on that. They might believe they're giving them a chance to live, but domesticated animals usually don't last long after being abandoned. Most are hit by cars early on because they'll stay near the roadside waiting for their owner to come back. There are also more predators in the countryside. I love how much you care about these abandoned kitties and how you are helping them survive and getting them fixed❣❣❣

omg Samantha's energy is so sweet!!! You can tell how much she truly loves her cats and wants the best for them.
I had a super intelligent Guinea Pig that I trained. When using human language she responded to 2 or 3 note melodies for each trick along with a hand gesture. I miss her every day. My first kitten is on his way.
When I got my kitten my whole family thought it was stupid that I was teaching my cat to sit. This kitty is over a year old, he knows how hard he is allowed to bite during play, he sits and waits for food instead of just taking it off my plate, he comes when I call him, and he knows what 'leave it' means. Is he perfectly obedient? NO. Cats are even more stubborn than dogs and where a well-loved dog will do anything to please their pet parent, a cat can be like a toddler, they know the rules but sometimes they just want to throw the ball in the house when mom isn't looking. Clicker training is awesome and my cat loves knowing how to communicate with me.
I already had a clicker so I decided to give it a try with my two cats. Ivan, the older cat, learned how to sit in less than five minutes. Freya is an older kitten who is easily distracted but she caught on soon after Ivan. I can’t wait until tomorrow’s session with my brilliant fuzz friends!

I really liked teaching my cat a different kind of clicker training. We did regular clicker training (mouth sounds) but then I had a different click that I used as a kind of "Marco Polo" where I'd click lighter and repeatedly. Faster and louder when she gets close to the Macguffin, and a high pitched "Nope" if she went the wrong direction. She'd start scanning left to right to get the right clicks before going. Eventually I could hide treats around the house and clicker her around to the hidden treats and loud click when she got it. She *loved* it, vibrating tails, falling on the ground for some floor cuddles.

I love clicker training! My George is kind of stuck on coming to a particular spot when asked. He does it but gets easily bored, so I was thinking of mixing it up but was not sure what else to try. This gave me a ton of fun ideas! And I can’t recommend this enough for safety reasons. If your cat will come when called in an emergency, think of the peace of mind you will have!
In dog agility "through the cones" is called "slalom"!
Wow, you literally uploaded this on my first day clicker training my cat.
I have just started clicker training with my big boy. I've been daily sitting with him and getting him to understand clickeans treat. I laughed when she said call her cat to come by calling him because I actually meow at mine like he does when he's hungry and he comes running lol
Been doing sit clicker training with my cat but he's still so food obsessed that it's hard to get him to calm down for a lot of the further stuff. He does sit, mostly but only if I do with food (hasn't resonated beyond to sit on command any other time). Picture tasmanian devil any time food is around, especially something he knows. I actually spent the 1st month with him having to eat my meals standing in the middle of the kitchen bcuz he'd dive to any surface it was & steal it & get all bent out of shape cuz it's present. Still has starving kitty mindset even tho he's been well fed since I took him in.
Interesting wall color. It's like Burgundy Mist from Fender Musical Instruments.
thank you for your time, this was very inspiring and your are so cute and precious and beautiful.
The cone walking - I've had cats that would do this with legs instead of cones. You have to walk a certain way, and they weave in and out as you walk.
I've never been an animal person until I got my cat Freddie, so I was completely brand new to training and had no clue what I was doing, but this method works! My cat Freddie now Sits, sits up pretty, high fives, does "touch" (where I say touch and he runs up and touches his nose to my hand, it's a really good recall tool if I need him to come to me quickly and I need to grab him, I learned that from Cats Vs Dogs!) He does "Spin" And right now we're working on "Stay"! Freddie is so smart and giving him more complex tasks than just chasing a feather wand has been so stimulating for him!!
Great timing, thanks!
I'm going to try this. I used to have a death cat and we had hand singmals. When I wanted her attention, I would gently stomp on the floor.
I live in a small apartment with 2 rescue kittens that are about 6 months old, now. Just bought a clicker but I wasn't sure how to use it. Thank you for this posting. It really helps. 😺
Thanks for sharing. I'm going to try this. I have your clicker and treats pack.
Her apartment is remarkably clean for a multicat and kitten family. Kudos to her.
One of my cats is a little less play driven and I have a hard time getting him engaged in playtime, but he’s also much more food motivated than his brother. Last night I spent about two minutes teaching him “sit” and he mastered it so quickly. Tonight I tried it again and he didn’t even need a refresher. I’m about to order a clicker for him. I’m sure my other cat will benefit from it too, but my shy guy really seems like a natural.
Thank you so much! 😀
Oh my goodness! I love her so much!!! Assuming that's her house, I absolutely love it too! Cats, crystals and catification perfection!
I've not used a clicker before, but I have been doing training with Charlie for years. He comes when I call him, and does sit and touch for treats. Cats are way more clever than we give them credit for. I definitely have to invest in a clicker now and see if I can take his training to the next level.

A concentrate and crystal clear of all I needed to know. Thanks a lot.
I will try definitely 😊 thanks !!!!
Love it! Thank you! 👏💕💕💕
I taught my cat to shake hands, and now sometimes he tries to initiate a hand shake as sweet sign language for “may I please have a treat?” He also comes when called and sits on command. I didn’t use a clicker-just words and treats. We are working on brushing teeth right now. Sometimes (when in the right mood), he will also fetch-maybe a clicker would help with that one. Thank you for all the helpful info you share with us, Jackson!
Samantha is so cute
Love it! Thank you so much for this video. Can't wait to give it a try tomorrow with my two cuties.
WOO! imma go train the cats at my local shelter ♥️♥️♥️
LOVE your tee Jackson!!
training is so much fun and great for bonding. my old cat could do several things on command and when we walked the dogs he'd follow through the gardens(we live in a huge summerhome area with very few and slow driving cars) and when i'd call him he'd come running, sit with the dogs and get a treat. was always so funny to see ppls faces when he came racing from a bush XD
Wow! Totally awesome!!!!!!
Thank you Jackson! Shall try this with my cat
Very informative! Thank you so much.
Great Tips 👌
Out of skeptical interest I decided to practice the come here command with my 4-5 month old (we weren't super sure on age) but using my mouth as a clicker I got my cat to come to me about 4 times. She got a bit over stimulated and proceeded with zoomies but it goes to show clicker training works even with first timers.
I just loved it. .......... Thank you very much for your advice
You are a real cat god. Yesterday my friends and I were talking about all things cats and I mentioned your name so often. “Butttt Jackson Galaxy said.....”
