Tawny makes her ferreting debut
Спорт
When the time was right I decided Tawny would make her ferreting debut. We went to Norfolk, because I wanted to see her work in the kind of environment that will become her bread and butter: long-nets, plenty of ferrets and deep, expansive warrens. Obedience wasn’t the only facet of her upbringing that would be put to the test on the day. Her concentration, patience, determination, excitement and luck would be tested, too - and how would she react to rabbit-coloured ferrets running about with rabbits? Would she become bored and start to wander, both physically and mentally? Would she run through the long-nets after a rabbit? How would she react to the gallery watching her working?
I was also conscious of the fact that my new ferreting companion would not mature until well into her second season - sadly, many people heap too much expectation and pressure too soon on their young dogs. For this reason, I would pay scant attention to her rawness and naivety, because there would be plenty of time to polish her in the coming months.
The first mark
Connected to her leash, Tawny remained wholly focused while I scooped up a handful of ferrets. The octagon of long-netting awaited. Once I had slipped the leash off, Tawny was independent for the first time. Her angular stance gave away her strong collie ancestry. She searched around the holes and mounds of rabbit droppings and then her demeanour changed, signalling the occupancy of our bounty underground. The mark was given; it was now my job to honour this and produce the goods. Because Tawny sees rabbits every day, she knows when they are at home. Her strong marking had now reached a level where I wanted to reward her mark with the production of rabbits. This would show her that when she marks, I enter a ferret and out comes the rabbit.
Marking the open warren, Tawny constantly looked at me for reassurance. I entered the four ferrets at each of the far corners, and I stood back. It would take time for the ferrets to stamp their authority on the rabbits, so the novice dog must exhibit a degree of patience, not look into the distance or go in search of something more appealing. These bad habits are easily formed yet are hard to eradicate.
I left her to her own devices to see how she would react. The ferrets took their time, even after I added a further brace. Tawny sat beside me, as her large bat-like ears scanned the air for any sounds, her nose twitching and her pupils dilated.
The ferrets raced around, both above and below. What we needed was a lucky break, a bolt or at least a hole-hopping rabbit. Unfortunately, when one did pop its head up - then down - Tawny was inspecting part of a large warren at the opposite side and didn’t see it.
The lack of action didn’t appear to faze her, but I didn’t like the way in which she preferred to sit rather than stand. I gently raised her to a standing position, because this would make it easier for her to accelerate. Fortuitously, a rabbit bolted into the waiting net with Tawny in hot pursuit. But what would she do? Would she follow the rabbit into the net?

Great video Simon, rounded my weekend off perfectly..
Tawny is fantastic. I love her crazy ears - I guess they will stay like that. She had a ball on her first day. Great to see a talented dog performing as she was bred to.
Brilliant simon bet you was chuffed with that for the 1st working the young 1 obviously coming on very well
Great video, thanks so much for making this. My mutt’s starting on rats and it’s good to see all the confusion that goes into their hunting in the beginning, reflected here in a dog bred for it.
Cant stop staring at her...thats one fine dog! 👍 :D
love little Tawney, so gald i had the pleasure to meet her! x
lovely dawg! collie x greyhound - great combo!
Nice job, lovely dog

Beautiful, just beautiful.
You good dog mate she works well wouldn't have thought that was her first time she's a good one
What s beautiful dog.
beautiful
nice one, cheers.
What cross is she? We use greyhound x border collies to hunt woodchucks (bolted by min-dachshounds) or jack rabbits (actually a species of hare) because our cottontail rabbits don't live in warrens or burrows and it is illegal to use ferrets for hunting in America. Great dogs. Great videos.
Tawny is a very special hunting dog.

would have been better if you had taught her to keep her head out of the sets would have saved a lot of digging nice dog though
Wondering where you got Tawny really interested in her!
I’ve got a sprightly Male whippet pup, if I were to bring him ferreting with my cousins in Devon how do you stop the dog from killing the ferrets as they come up?
Great team should be a fruitful few years
There was a stray dog that dug a huge hole in my yard and ate a fat gopher. The hole was just right that I planted a peach tree in it.
okay ..officially in love with your life and Tawny !! lucky duck
Are those dogs a Borsoi (cross) or are they a Saluki cross? Or are they a recognized breed, with collie?
What age did you start her on dead rabbits and what age you started her on the warren ferreting?
clever man
What breed is tawny? I thought she was greyhound
Fantastic lurcher . Is it collie blooded ? Looks like my old stock half cross collie greyhounds .

fieldsport cymru the black and white one possibly, but the red one could have pit in him somewhere
is that hancock bred
So will Tawny make the correction to using her mouth instead of her paws on her own? Or is that something you'll have to train her to do? Also, do you know how ferreters kept track of the ferrets before the collars? Great video!

You could use cord and collars but not advised, we used to lay on the ground and spread yourself out so you could feel any vibrations, you only had issues if the ferret nailed and killed the rabbits below ground, you could normally feel the vibrations with that level of commotion going on, plus the rabbits normally thump the ground with their back legs to try and warn the ferret off.

Friends, I love lurchers! Greyhound mixed with other breeds. I like the aesthetics inherited from greyhounds. LONGYLIUM, CURVILIENT, MUSCULOUS body, short hair, with varied and beautiful colors. But the greyhounds' temperament does not have what I want and I look for it. I want a dog with a territorialist sense, at least, react to the arrival of strangers in my home. Does the greyhound mix German Shepherd dog produce a good watchdog? What do you say ? Or do you know of another mix that produces an animal with the appearance of greyhound but with guard dog temperament? Thank you very much.
✌
What breed is she????
What happens to all the rabbits caught? Source of food?

It’s a berry mate not a warren that’s where a wild rabbits live
