Ferreting, the importance of getting your ferret back

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Using the Ferret Finder.
To start off with, I ensure all of my collars are fitted with extra holes. They will then fit every ferrets' neck. These change between ferrets and their physiological state at differing times of the year. I also carry a battery tester so I can see what charge is in the batteries as this will effect it's calibration and it's 16ft range. Although the MK1 still has many admirers, the differences between the Mk1 and the MK3 are sizable. The MK1 was terrible for picking up interference, especially metallic. The MK3's internal anti-interference capabilities along with its accurate LED readings make it the set to use but it does have a sound that a lot of ferreters don’t like. To deal with this, a later addition of a pitch finder on the receiver acts like a volume control but I feel that the pitch of the tone is the secret to location. The main difference when working it is the LED meter rather than a wheel like the MK1 had. It is either 4ft or 5ft not in between, unlike the adjustable wheel.
The fitting of the collar is also important. The transmitter must be under the chin as it's signal is egg shaped thus effects accuracy, also, this must be taken into account as many ferrets are on their side when scrabbling at a rabbit in order to try and make it turn and bolt.
To state the obvious, to use this device correctly the ferret must first be stationary, as trying to locate a moving ferret, unless aufait with this set is hard. Switch the finder on, place on search and hold outright like a pistol. It's just like playing hot or cold and follow the signal until it is 8ft or under. Switch the device to locate, change stance to upright like a cup and pin point the location in the same manner, hot and cold pretending to place the finder on the corners of an imaginary two ft box. The signal and pitch will tell you when you have gone too far and you need to this until wherever you place the finder the signal is the same, it should be a 1ft box now. Once the signal is the same in the corners you have the sweet spot to dig.

The first time my grandfather went ferreting in the 1930's, he tied one end of a ball of string to the ferrets collar and let the ball of string play out. Then he tugged on it. No ferret. After wondering what to do, he decided to walk back to his bicycle. When he got back to his bicycle, the ferret was waiting, still attached to the unravelled ball of string.

The title proves the compassion and ethics of this ferreter: 'The importance of getting your ferret back'. He's not concerned about 5 quid to buy a replacement animal. He wants to keep his ferret business going strong. Good on him!

Brilliant video as always simon I hate people that dont use a ferret finder locator and I hate it even more when people just say fuck it its only a ferret only costs a 5er for a new 1 and just walk off home and leave the ferret in the wild alone because it didn't return back out the holes after laying up

Pre-digitised technology, we used a lined dog ferret on deep burrows, or a bar on shallow ones. The big dog ferret held onto the dead rabbit and was pulled out, while the other ferret tagged along. In shallow burrows, putting an ear to a bar stuck in the ground, it was possible to hear the activity of the ferret. Having located it, we dug it out - carefully. If ferret-finders had been available, we would possibly have used them, assuming they were cheap enough and worked properly. Obviously, poachers would prefer a low-intensity flashing light, rather than the beeping. The only ferret we ever lost was one killed by a fox.

I have both the mk1 15ft and the mk3 ferret finder but get on a lot better with the mk1 as its what I have always used. I do use the mk3 collars with the mk1. I have found that over the years the finder has payed for its self with the amount of extra rabbits it has got me and the amount of ferrets I have not lost IE none.

If I buy the mk3 it only comes with the one collar with the receiver on it can the one finder mk3 work on more than one collar at once ? So if one rabbit and the other one is far apart on a rabbit can the finder work or the both or more ?

I want to start ferrreting. However, I live in South Texas where Copper Heads and Rattle Snakes are common among other venomous snakes. My question is... How much of a problem would that present for me? Can the Ferret hold its own or is it a risk one would have to accept?

Ferrets often encounter European adders but rattle snakes are possibly much more dangerous and strike more frequently. I think if you want to start ferreting, go to colder climates to do so. However there are ferreters in Australia who possibly have the same difficulties but they may carry antivenom for their ferrets and dogs.

all this for one rabbit? surely this has to be more efficient that it looks right? this is the first time i've heard of this hunting method and honestly my dog and gun could have 3 rabbits before he even dug the hole. its a cool method but i don't get it

Jessica Horner ferrets don't always get stuck if I understand correctly. They are used to flush rabbits out of holes then the rabbits run in to a net.
