Ferreting an old people's home

Спорт

The South Somerset Ferreters - that fun-loving group of ferret owners from Ilminster - have found a new spot. It's an old people's home that wants a vegetable patch. But there will be no veg while Peter Rabbit and his gang own the garden. Jaf and the gang unleash nets, dogs and ferrets on a long brambly bank to see what they can catch.

Why catch rabbits?
Rabbit shooting and ferreting is a legal activity in line with UK animal welfare laws. They are designed to remove rabbits, cute but a major pest, from agricultural land, where they dig up ground causing hazards to livestock and they damage crops. Both ferreting and shooting are more selective than the alternative, poisoning rabbits. It is also social, involving groups of ferret owners who go out at weekends and have little or no representation in other media. Plus rabbit meat is lean, healthy and local sourced. Give it a try.
We’re proud to promote enjoyment of fieldsports and the countryside. There are three guiding principles to everything we do on Fieldsports Channel:
▶ Shoot responsibly
▶ Respect the quarry
▶ Ensure a humane, clean and quick kill

I hunted with ferrets for years here in Australia. We never has ferrets finders (it was the 70s), to get ferrets out who had made a kill and were having a nap, we put a dead rabbit in the mouth of a hole and shake it from side to side so it made a thumping sound similar to a bolting rabbit. They'd wake up and start looking for the prey. Normally they'd find it, latch on, and we could just drag them out with the dead rabbit. If that didn't work, field dress the rabbit and leave the entrails at the mouth of a hole and stamp on the warren, the noise and scent would wake them up and they'd come investigating.

And if that dont work leave the ferret box there over night with some rabbit offal and go back first thing in the morning usually find the ferret curled up asleep in the box if not stick your head down the hole and call it out or waggle a stick down a rabbit hole so it hears it and comes out it does work most of the time. All so ferrets can be lost too. Which is sad . As its always your best worker too.

I am in sixth form and was talking to a teacher today about rabbiting. She said it was cruel. In y opinion, farming is crueler because when livestock are shipped for miles and then get killed in slaughterhouses, they are scared etc. For a rabbit to be hunted, its an everyday occurrence for them so they don't panic as much and its organic and its lived freely.

@@alfieclayton3418 I think just by making it more public to raise awareness in anyway. Our countryside here in Northern Ireland is already full of buzzards and foxes with little to no small game left. Any ban on fox hunting is going to increase numbers in an environment that doesn't have enough resources to sustain them. This ban is aimed at hunting any mammals with a dog. That will include ratting, ferreting. I believe the last time a bill like this was put together was 2010 and parts of that bill also aimed at some bans on angling which is why it did not succeed. People want it banned with no insight into the repercussions on the environment. Thank you for you're reply 👍
