Ferreting, a Record Day

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Rabbits are a resourceful species. If they have a pocket of land on which to build a warren and there’s a consistent food source, then before you have time to turn into Mr McGregor, they quickly become self-sufficient. Add to that a little disturbance and predation, and bingo, you have the recipe for a flourishing rabbit utopia. These pockets are rare in southern England but every now and then I stumble across one. Last November, one such venue presented itself but it quickly became clear that an operation to remove the rabbits would be physically and mentally testing, involving long hours of hard graft in unforgiving weather and a lack of quality sleep.

Lovely video! Thanks for posting, can I please ask those more experienced than me a question? I've been into hunting for years now grew up around it. Air rifle and shotgun, but I'm thinking of getting a lurcher. I'm a smallish woman and any wounded rabbits (which is very rare thankfully only had a few in mainly with the .410 as I don't like taking anything but headshots with the airgun which is sub 12ft lb) have been dealt with by my shooting partner my dad, who has taught me the since I was 12 now I'm nearing 30! I've been wanting to get a lurcher for a while Ive been told lurchers, a lot of the time bring rabbits back alive ( my experience with dogs is limited to terriers ratting and spaniels flushing and fetching) I've been shown how to dispatch them by breaking the neck, but I'm worried I'll get it wrong, and hurt them not dispatch humanly. Would a 6ft lb air pistol do the job at close range? Or should Iearn to break the neck? Any advice throughout appreciated! And sorry for all the questions! Good luck hunting all!

Hi Bexs, just get someone to teach you how to nech or chin the rabbits. Once you've got the technique sorted, it really doesn't take much strength to do it. That said, not all lurchers retrieve live to hand.. 👍
