From Wikipedia:
The Tappan Zee Bridge, officially named the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, is a twin cable-stayed bridge spanning the Hudson River between Tarrytown and Nyack in the U.S. state of New York. It was built to replace the original Tappan Zee Bridge, which was located just to the south. The new bridge's north span carries the northbound and westbound automobile traffic of the New York State Thruway, Interstate 87 (I-87) and I-287; it also carries a shared use path for bicycles and pedestrians. The south span carries southbound and eastbound automobile traffic.
The process to replace the original bridge kicked off in 2012, with construction on the new spans beginning by contractor Tappan Zee Constructors in 2013. The Left Coast Lifter (one of the world's biggest cranes) was instrumental in the construction of the bridge. The north span officially opened to westbound traffic on August 26, 2017, and eastbound traffic temporarily began using the north span on October 6, 2017. Contractors then began demolishing the old bridge. An opening ceremony for the south span was held on September 7, 2018, and traffic started using the new span three days later.
The bridge's official name, commemorating former New York Governor Mario Cuomo, has been controversial since its announcement. A petition and several pieces of proposed legislation have sought to restore the bridge's name to that of its predecessor.

Let us get on the same page considering the name. There are signs calling it both. Great way to confuse incompetent drivers.

Thank you Mileage Mike for keeping the Tappan Zee the Tappan Zee like you did in your last Tappan Zee video! Tappan = indigenous people of the area. Zee = Dutch for Sea or Bay denoting the widest spot on what was once known as the "North River".

The Tappan Zee Bridge in it's new form was built to replace the old one. The toll plaza in Westchester County, NY (east of the Hudson) was replaced with a toll gantry in Rockland County, NY (west of the Hudson) which is a nice improvement overall. I wish they do the same with toll booths linking NYC proper.

You can even walk across the Bridge at any time of the day or night. Off Albany post Rd/Broadway/US-9. Plus bus lanes for Hudson Link. And tolls galore.

The New Tappan Zee Bridge, officially the Governor Mario Cuomo Bridge, is a two-span bridge connecting the village of Tarrytown in Westchester County, NY and the village of Nyack in Rockland County, NY. First opened to Rockland-bound traffic in August 2017, the bridge replaced the previous Governor Malcolm T. Wilson Tappan Zee Bridge, a single-span bridge constructed during the Korean War in generally the same spot as the Westchester-bound span of the new bridge. The New York State Thruway, including Interstate 87 and the co-signed Interstate 287, cross the bridge. The bridge spans the Hudson River at its widest point, due mainly to any crossings of the Hudson further south being under the jurisdiction of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, while the bridge is under the jurisdiction of the New York State Thruway Authority. The bridge has faced some controversy since it opened, including criticism of then-Governor Andrew Cuomo opting to drop “Tappan Zee” from the name when the bridge first opened (Tappan being the name of a Native American tribe originally from the area and Zee being the Dutch word for sea, the area had long used the moniker) as well as the decision to open the Rockland-bound span of the bridge prematurely so as to be usable prior to the 2018 New York State Gubernatorial Democratic Primary Election in an attempt to win political points. Shortly after the rushed opening, engineering flaws were discovered in the construction, including wind screens being improperly installed and leading to multiple trucks overturning and blocking the bridge within weeks of opening as well as flaws in the bolts used to construct the bridge, which forced a temporary emergency closing of the bridge due to the potential for imminent catastrophic failure. Both issues have since been addressed and no known engineering issues exist at this time. The bridge has been generally well-liked by users and locals alike, with many pointing to the design being a significant upgrade aesthetically over the bridge it replaced, as well as the accessibility of the bridge to bike riders and pedestrians with its walkway/bikeway on the north side of the Rockland-bound span. In addition to passenger car and pedestrian traffic, the bridge features a bus land for the Hudson Link bus service. Initial plans had discussed the possibility of a rail link, though those were dropped fairly quickly due largely to budgetary complications and issues connecting to existing Metro North tracks.
