140,000 cars per day. 5 bucks each. 700,000$ per day. 250,000,000$ a year. It'll be paid off in 16 years. Lifespan of 100 years. A good investment.

Only possible because of low interest rates. Otherwise normally the toll would have to be twice as much.

It's a joke, as an upstate New Yorker, they will never take down the tolls. They keep them up and pay the fines and still rape us with tolls 20 years later. That's how NYS works

It's a waste of money. The freeway system doesn't have this many lanes so lots of it will go unused and cause bottlenecks on mergers. And commuters have to foot the bill in sky high tolls.

@EpiDemic117 The naming rights should be leased out to companies so that we can lessen the tax burden on the citizens. We would also avoid situations like this where bridges are named for politicians who swindled their way into office. This is New York State's Imperial bridge named after our ruling family, the Cuomos. Really gross stuff that could be avoided with a solution which would help pay for a significant portion of the bridge.

I drove past the construction of the new Bridge 2x a week for 6 months while I was commuting from PA to Andover, MA for consulting work. Sitting in traffic on Friday afternoons watching them lift these massive spans was a sight I would never forget, but as I sat on the old, swaying and shaking TappanZee, holding my breath in hopes that I could make it to the Otherside so that someday I could drive on the new bridge. I finished my working gig in Andover, Mass in Sept of 2015, then I set up email alerts on the progress for the new bridge opening and I made it a point to make sure I could drive across it on day one. So I got up that morning and made my way to NY, 2 hours from my home, and stayed overnight at a local hotel just so I could be ready to cross the new span. The night before I crossed using the original span and then the next new day I was using the new bridge. it was amazing, beautiful to look at and a memory I will have for life. As a native of Bridgeport, CT with family still in the area of Bridgeport I utilize this bridge on every visit to see my family and even in 2020 I look in awe at this bridge and smile knowing America can still build great things. If you have never driven across the old Tappan Zee bridge you never knew the fear you would have wondering if this was the day it was going to break apart and collapse into the Hudson, it was exciting and scary at the same time and known by the NY locals as the Hold Your Breath bridge. The best part of my history of using the old Tappan Zee is having a shirt I bought in 2018 once both spans of the new bridge were finally opened was this shirt that says I drove on and survived the original Tappan Zee bridge.

The new bridge is awful. It has none of the unique charm the old one had. And why the tall fencing on both sides of the bridge? It ruins the magnificent view. They also seemed to flatten out the roadway. Part of the charm of the old bridge was the extreme difference in elevation from one end to the other. They of course did away with that, too, taking all the quirks and unique features of the old Tappan Zee and putting a huge boring lump of concrete in its place

Say what you like about Cuomo. I personally think he's a real piece of work and do not agree with his political views. This bridge would not have been completed without him, which alleviates thousands of traffic hours and time wasted trying to cross the archaic Tappan Zee Bridge. Even if the overall lifetime costs of this bridge double, it will have been more than worth it in commerce that it supports throughout it's lifetime. Infrastructure is generally always money well spent. It baffles me that it took them this long to even start this stupid bridge. Thank you Cuomo!

I'm sorry, but I prefer the original bridge over the new one. If the old bridge had problems, why couldn't they temporarily close off the bridge and make repairs to the infrastructure? The new one is, in my opinion, similar to the new World Trade Center in New York City. And, speaking of which, I prefer the original World Trade Center (before 9/11/2001). I'm very sentimental, nostalgic, and emotional. Old Tappan Zee Bridge > New Tappan Zee Bridge Old World Trade Center > New World Trade Center Where's a time machine when I need one? I would definitely take it back to the past again. Back when the Twin Towers were still standing in NYC and back when the Tappan Zee Bridge was still in operation.

There are plenty of other positive stories about building projects in the United States. The problem is that nobody wants to report on successful projects. New York and Los Angeles media companies don't bother with the fly over and corner States. Seattle has more construction cranes in operation than any other city in North America. Stuff is happening, and has been for many years. Get out of the glass bubbles you media people live in and you might actually see folks working hard to make this country a better place.

Leaving aside the digs at the corrupt governments there are practical reasons. The Hudson River is pretty wide at that point, it is subject to tidal currents, plus there is a lot of traffic on the river. In addition the bridge has to carry a lot of vehicular traffic... that's what it's for after all. They might have been able to build a cheaper bridge, but not that much cheaper, and certainly not for 1/10 the cost.

WTF is this BS. They build a bridge that costs the citizens ~4 billion and than they want to charge a toll to commute on the bridge. They also never said whether or not the toll would ever go away after they paid the debt off. Of course you would need sufficient reservoir funds for repairs. This is what happens when the state makes a deal to build a bridge with a private company, they're going to such the money out of the citizens and if they decide they want to raise the tolls who's going to stop them? Again I say WTF this is BS.
