In a few years, we'll be watching videos of this bridge being imploded.

I remember my grandfather calling this the "new" bridge in the 60s. He was fascinated with it.

Crazy how the old bridge costed only 60 million to construct and the new one is costing 3.9 billion.

Right now There bulding a replacement bridge for the the Tappan Zee Bridge. The work started in 2013 and it's supposed to be completed in 2018. I drive across that bridge every day in the summer and so far the construction is looking great.

I haven't been across this bridge since 1997 and last Sunday I went across it .I was amazed to see the new bridge that was being built and the repairs to the existing bridge guard rails. I guess they don't want another truck lost in the river. Did they ever find the truck that went over the side ?

Great vintage video. I drove over that same "super" highway and the Tap the other day and it is a mess now. Strange to think that here in America that almost 60 years ago we had better bridges and roads than we do now. Guess we spent too much money building stuff in other countries. I say fix OUR roads and bridges FIRST. Thanks for sharing this.

They should've built a suspension bridge instead. It would've been one of the longest & would last longer.

They couldn't make a suspension bridge because there was no anchor in the ground so the only bridge that they could've made was a cantilever bridge and that's what they did

You can see the bridge from my window (live in tarrytown) and it's going to be a pain in the ass when they start the new one but it's necessary.

@CircleCityEric "Government funded"? As opposed to what? Church bake sales? When it is replaced you can be sure it will be "government funded" . Of course "government" actually has no money of its own so it will have to use a large chunk of our tax money for the project.
