Tanzania's witch trials | Unreported World

The Witch Hunters: This week Unreported World comes from Tanzania, where hundreds of women have been murdered, accused of being witches. More people still believe in the phenomenon here than many other countries in Africa. But some think there's more to these attacks than just fear of the supernatural, as Ade Adepitan found out.

Never have I ever had such a huge respect for the interviewer anywhere. Not because he is in a wheelchair, but because he is such a compassionate human-being who knows what to ask in different circumstances. Not many possess such ability. Many just tend to be neutral, almost distant from the issue they are trying to broadcast.

The first man they interviewed who's wife was killed and burnt... I can't help but imagine her begging and screaming for her husband to help her, and him standing there. She would've known what was coming and every fibre of her being would've wanted her husband to rescue her. Imagine knowing all your life that you have done nothing wrong by anyone and then suddenly you are accused, condemned to death, for something you know within the depths of your soul, you had no part of. Her body burning, a life lost, and all for hearsay... this hurts my heart.

Seeing this channel’s videos makes me so grateful for what I have. My biggest worries are what clothes I’m wearing tomorrow, or when my amazon packages will be delivered. There are people in other countries suffering and yet they are still able to smile and be grateful for all they have. This just made me realize how much I have and how I wish I could help other people. The woman who got her roof repaired was so happy despite all she’s gone through. Seeing her smile really just makes me so happy man. What an evil world we live in.

I witnessed a witch trial once. Back in 2008 when i was 10 years old. Both my parents were born and raised in Tanzania. The accusers were preparing a fire to burn them. I was shocked. I remember being with my father And he hurried to the police station to get help. And he did save the day. I still cannot believe what I saw. And among the accused was a little girl no older than six years old.

Correct. It is the ultimate cause of the suffering and the self-destruction of a people: Superstition led IGNORANCE. This manifests itself in the form of vengeance, malice, and misogyny. I am so relieved to know that many Africans- men and women alike- are examining this age-old ignorance and are fighting to bring all the sources and instigators of this bloodshed to justice, and a well deserved end.

I wanna make a clarification couse I’m a Tanzanian and I want you to get it right. It’s not only wemen that were being killed it’s all the old people with some sorts of red eyes which they believed it was a sign of sorcery. But these killings affected wemen more than men. The government solved this problem ( belief) with the help of sungusungu(local vigilantes)then another killings evoked of old bald men were sacrificed for wealth seeking, this didn’t take much longer, it vanished by sentencing all the witch doctors and every participant in it. Note: This only happened in a certain tribe in Tanzania in one region, this tribe believes so much in witchcraft and also its where the killings of albinism was intense. And Remember Tanzania has more than 26 regions and more than 126 tribes in place 🤔

I am from Tanzania, its a big peaceful country, this documentary was based on lake region, a small portion of the country where people still have strong beliefs on witch-hunting.like many other countries in the world witchcraft was practiced before the introduction of any religion and so does witch hunting. Its a secretive act. The governments and NGOs are acting upon the issue, spreading awareness and education. recent there have been a big change due to increasingly affordable education and religion; as we both know its not easy to change a belief, help is still needed to change the minds of witch hunters especially psychological help. I hope this documentary steer more help to the affected communities.

Governments cannot protect all people all the times, otherwise we wouldn’t have gang crime in the us and territorial stabbing in the UK. If Tanzania was the land where government doesn’t protect people, it wouldn’t rank among the most peaceful countries in the world according to the world peace index. It’s possible to condemn an evil act without using a judgmental generalizing statement.

King Kinjikitile ... what exactly are you referring as "generaling" when the discussion is "labeling WOMEN" as witches, expecially purposefully to "steal" their inheited land or grudgeful purposes. Clear with such attitude you must live in such areas this is condoned. If so... SHUT YOUR DAMNED MOUTH!!!!

Seeing the lady’s joy on the roof built was one of the most beautiful sights ever, it’s scary how such basic necessities are being deprived by so many people yet inspiring , how they continue to live , love and not lose hope

Seems Women are often just being Falsely Accused ... So these so called men can Kill Women . But by your own mother Falsely accusing her own Daughter just to Steel Her Daughter's Inheritance . Kind of gives a person an unwanted Chill . And sleeping with 1 eye open

stefan6888 it’s not Jesus fault that these things happen it’s humanity’s choices .. you get to choose and pick your choices but you can’t blame Jesus .. just have faith and pray don’t stop.. tired of people like you always makin bad choices then yet blame god for all these .. there are consequences in everyone’s choice .. good or bad .. wake up

stefan6888 obviously it’s proof he doesn’t exist! 🤦🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️ DO 👏🏽YOUR 👏🏽RESEARCH!!!!! 👏🏽 if Jesus exists, why do these things happen? I mean, really! Go back in history during the slave days, slaves were told they can’t read anything educational but threw a bible down their throat, I mean, what does that tell you! 🤷🏽‍♀️

Love how this documentary gives you different situations that have been caused by labeling someone a witch. The piece about the mother is classic human greed. I think we need to be more thankful for our privilege. That lovely lady who was nearly hacked to death with a MACHETE was beyond happy for having a roof on her house.
