The Middle-Class British Man That Founded Modern Witchcraft | Britain's Wicca Man | Timeline

Britain’s Wicca Man tells the extraordinary story of Britain's fastest growing religious group - Wicca - and of its creator, an eccentric Englishman called Gerald Gardner.
Historian and leading expert in Pagan studies, Professor Ronald Hutton, explores the unlikely origins of modern pagan witchcraft and experiences first hand its growing influence throughout Britain today.
Gardner’s story and the story of Wicca itself is a bizarre one. The film tells of a peculiar man who saw that the world was ready for a new religion based on magic, sex, nature and ritual - and gave it to us. Documentary first broadcast in 2011.

This video is not true just by the title. a man never created witchcraft. But historically Men take credit for things they didn’t make or create- but rather saw someone else do. Shakespeare stole all of his stories from a black woman who would tell stories to children in a neighboring area. Witchcraft is started by women. do some research and see the history of divination and witchcraft and everything started in Africa. It started in Africa by WOMEN.

My grandma was a Wiccan. I didn't know until now that the practices that she performed was considered witchcraft. As a child I witnessed her success in healing myself and other people. She was not an evil person . She was a loving giving lady. She helped people who lived in her town. A doctor was not always around. She delivered so many babies. She died in 1964. I miss her every day. Thank you for sharing this program!

It starts waaay back before king Solomon, it’s called occult because it’s secret but we can see in the uk that magick has been here before we ever knew anything about any gods, it comes from djin, those djin where later made into demons and angel by the west as magic evolved. Today modern practitioners can take a long old ceremony and refine it down to something modern and useful out of it, that’s what this doc is about. Hope I helped

I met my beloved husband 30 years ago. He was practicing Wicca and had an altar in his second bedroom. I asked about it and he just told me not to touch it, that it was religious. I ended up asking him 3 times before he handed me Raymond Buckland's Complete Book of Witchcraft (or, as several call it "Uncle Bucky's Big Blue Book.) I went through it and did all the exercises in a week, came back and asked for more. We did my dedication the night of Samhain (Halloween) we were handfasted (married by a priestess) and a year and a day later we did my initiation. I had a coven that worked through to third degree before we hived them off. I was a representative and assistant director of the biggest Pagan organization in Texas. I've pretty much stopped doing ritual because the exercise of the energies tires me out due to disability. But, I still do rituals in my head and heart, still honoring the God and Goddess and the Elements.

Caroline Barnes As a Wiccan high priestess, I felt that "...this one says this is how you can feel divine" was the most inaccurate statement I heard during the entire program. It really puzzled and saddened me why Dr. Hutton said it, because it just doesn't represent how Wiccans feel or what we're up to. We are actually very humble people who never aspire to becoming divine or usurping the gods in any way. We look for Flow. We make ourselves available to serve. We listen and watch for portends in Nature. We honor and venerate All that makes life on this planet possible. To allude that we seek to have power over people or events outside of our own lives is a gross misrepresentation of our intents and goals, and anyone detected behaving so would be talked to or shunned. I am really disappointed in that closing of this documentary... it was sensational, it was a sound byte, it sounded spooky, but it was not the truth.

Thank you for your comments, Leananshae. I totally understand where you are coming from and am in complete sympathy with it. There is a lot of confusion around this issue of human divinity and what it means. I practice kundalini yoga as taught by yogi Bhajan and a mantra that was given as an Aquarian age mantra is 'God and me, me and God are one.' I have seen that this can often create a reaction similar to what you expressed, that this is a statement about power and its uses and misuses, and as such people feel very uncomfortable with it. When I teach this in my classes I explain my understanding of this which is to do with energy fields. We all exist within a field of consciousness which traditionally we have called god, imagining the old man with the beard in the sky judging us. According to the shamans the body exists within the mind, and similarly we exist within the mind or energy field of god. We cannot be separated from infinity, we exist within it. For the last few millenia human beings have been suffering a delusion of separation to greater of lesser extents, and this has spawned other delusions such as power and its uses, projecting this out onto 'God' or 'gods' which are actually just projections of our own fears within this delusion of separation. I have not studied or practiced Wicca but I have always understood it as a benign method of staying in the flow of the divine or infinite energies whilst living in a finite system.

Anything NOT God AUTOMATICALLY = anti God = Satan, if it isn't in the bible from God it isn't of God. Also Having another religion in an area that is mostly populated by another religion threatens the areas original religion because it might sway the minds of other people causing numbers to dwindle and control of ideals to crumble. that't just my thought of it anyway..

Today, we're talking about preachers like Pastor Steven Anderson. These hate preachers try to revive Christianity in the West and promote its sense of religious supremacy. So, in order to achieve that they tell you all sorts of twisted stories to demonise Wicca and Wiccans.

Lilac exactly why do you think the main stream glorifies witchcraft? You are not “woke” as a witch or a star worshiper “zodiac “ look at every Netflix show IT GLORIFIES WITCHCRAFT. What do they do about Christ they stay keeping his name in their mouths in vein, it’s disgusting honestly. You are not woke because some false witch reads your zodiac symbols of the day. You are woke as soon as you see Jesus Christ died for you sin and walking in HIS WAY , THE NARROW PATH is the path to safety and light. Wide is the door to destruction. You want to go that way? By all means you have the free will to choose. But if you really think woke is witchcraft you’re really mistaken. Jesus name still reigns across nations like its meant too because he is the savior. God bless you and may you find Christ before its too late

Bethany Horvatin I know you mean well, but good intentions are not an excuse for shoving your religion on others. "Help that is not asked for or agreed to, by definition, is interference." It doesn't matter whether you're eloquent or not... being rude is being rude. How would you feel if I came onto these comments and "eloquently" started espousing the veneration of The Horned One and spoke of The Great Rite? You'd freak before you ever bothered to go look it up and probably feel pretty offended. If you aren't already seeking Wicca, I would never confront you with why you should want to be Wiccan. It's unethical. Listen: If your god wants me, he'll find a way to make me convert. Have a little faith in what you espouse. In the meantime, please go away and take care of the state of your own soul and leave people alone with theirs. Blessed Be!

As a Catholic girl and as a person of part British ancestry, i initially found this somewhat "confronting & even scary". Why? Bec i know not enough about it, although i have tried to educate myself in the past. My Father did own a very interesting book about "white witches" & that, was my first introduction relating to this broader topic. I remember flicking through the many pages & was so intrigued, interested, albeit, somewhat shocked & wanted to keep reading, but unfort, i didn't. I don't even know, if he still possesses this book anymore. I've found this documentary both interesting & enlightening. It's an important part of English history and who knows......Perhaps one or more of my British ancestors, may have even dabbled in &/or formally practiced witchcraft. I'm still doing deep research on my NW European ancestry, so let's see what i can find out. Thanks for sharing this documentary. My best wishes sent to all.

What we need to understand is that the conflation of Wicca and witchcraft is erroneous at best, and disingenuous at worst. It's true that Gardner referred to his tradition as "Witchcraft," but the fact of the matter is, they are two different things - Wicca is a religion, witchcraft is a practice that transcends religion. There are tons of witches out there who do not at all appreciate being equated with Wiccans. Therefore, no, Gerald Gardner did not invent witchcraft; he invented Wicca. Anyone who wishes to learn more about these things need to learn the difference between the two as early as possible in order to avoid confusion.

Very interesting this is. As an open minded but strong in my Faith different type of Christian. I never judge any type of religion or practice of faith. I love to learn and soak up knowledge. It's a type of common respect for ALL that I always give to my fellow humans, cryptids, beasts of the field, and birds of the air. The kicker here with me is my great grandmother from Portugal in the late 1800s was a legit medium and sweet. I get loads of paranormal in my 53 years of life that has and still does happen. Even have witnesses of ravens and crows flying within feet of me and cawing at me. Get why I'm a UN judgemental open but faithful Christian. I didn't really ask for all the paranormal I endure and encounter. But I accept it whole heartly. Again great video. Thank you. With love. God bless.

Scientists have recently discovered 'Dark Matter', so now I'm connecting the dots. Dark Matter isn't necessarily good or bad. It is something that has always been in existence in the Universe. The intention of a particular person is different than the energy or resource of 'Dark Matter.' It is like asking the question if a knife is good or bad. It all depends on what are you going to use the knife for. So, in casting spells; people use it for good or bad, and in either case the energy will ultimately return to the original person who sent that energy. It is called the Law of Karma, Cause and Effect, Sow and You Shall Reap, Law of Attraction, etc. People make evil deeds, and they don't realize that they will pay the prize in triple form; in this life time or in a future life time. It is like trying to escape our own shadow. The payment method or payback isn't necessarily in the same way of how the evil deed was done. People wish ill or evil to others, but then they lose one of their relatives or they get into some kind of accident. Nobody gets away with anything; even if we think nobody is watching us. The universe doesn't take sides or has any favorites.

If we were not religious we would stay in the dorms and clean. He then asked if any of us were Wiccans. One odd looking fellow raised his hand. Our Drill Sergeant leaned over to is counterpart and said "There's always one.” and giggled. He told the young man out loud "Well Sunday morning we'll put you in a room room by yourself and you can cut up a mattress or what ever you guys do". It was a good laugh before things got rough.

I really like the guy who's presenting the programme. He seems very considerate and respectful of their religion. He seems to reserve any skepticism. I found this programme fascinating and extremely informative. It helped me to assuage some of my suspicions. I will not at any time subscribe to their religion but I think there should be many more shows like this that address different peoples' thought processes and beliefs. Just my 2c.

You’ve expressed a very important idea, Imran! I wholeheartedly agree with you that the world needs more sharing-across ALL media-of the countless approaches to “Belief” that our fellow humans ascribe to... Documentaries are a great way to do such sharing, as we learn holistically, not just through language. We will never achieve World Peace without understanding one another, and there is more FEAR than understanding in the world-along with too many life-ending weapons. Open-minded people like you give me hope, and that’s my 2 cents!

@@nanwilder2853 Thank you Nan. Yes, you’re right; more sharing across all media is definitely required. Your point about weapons of mass destruction, including guns, is valid. I think you’re right in saying there’s too much misunderstanding in the world. It’s a terrible concoction. I feel like there are more people in this world willing to be open-minded than not.

Trade unions called Monday for the European Commission to impose maximum temperature limits for outdoor workers, after three people died while on shift in Madrid during last week's withering heatwave. While a handful of member states have legislation limiting working hours in excessive heat, the thresholds vary and many nations have no nationwide heat limits. According to research by the polling agency Eurofound, 23 percent of all workers across the EU were being exposed to high temperatures a quarter of the time. That figure rises to 36 percent in agriculture and industry and to 38 percent for construction workers. Previous research has linked high temperatures to a number of chronic conditions and an elevated risk of workplace injury. "Workers are on the frontline of the climate crisis every day and they need protections to match the ever-increasing danger from extreme temperatures," said Claes-Mikael Stahl, deputy secretary general of the European Trade Union Confederation. The ETUC said that most EU nations have no maximum temperature legislation for workplaces, although Belgium, Hungary and Latvia all have some curbs on activity. In France, where there are currently no working temperature limits, 12 workers died due to heat exposure in 2020 alone, the union said. Spain, where three workers died in extreme heat last week, does have temperature limits in place, but only for certain professions. A 60-year-old street cleaner on a one-month contract died in Madrid on Saturday, after he collapsed in the street from heatstroke while working the previous day. While a handful of member states have legislation limiting working hours in excessive heat, the thresholds vary and many nations have now nationwide heat limits

Fantastic documentary. Ronald Hutton has devoted his entire professional career to Wicca and Paganism. He is an authority on it and I wouldnt be a bit surprised if he was also a practitioner as well.

I was introduced to wiccanism by my mother in law and wife, and it resonates with me. Though just like any religion, it has subsections and I dont agree with everything, but thats okay. You're free to practice.

Wiccan's are "notoriously secretive"? Sure if you don't count social medial, public parks and gardens, coffee shops, book shops, candle shops, parades, clubs, bars, colleges/university's and every community billboard in almost every employer breakroom. We don't recruit , but we are out and proud almost everywhere!

Lineaged, initiatory traditions of Wicca (such as Gardnerian Wicca) do still remain secretive to a large degree. Neo Wicca is a lot more open, depending on the person, or persons practicing.

Targaryan GOT Thank You♡ Thing is, we don't make the mistake of personalising our gods. We give them pictures and idols so we can feel more connected to them, but know that they're of course no real persons. They are forces of nature, even within ourselves. And that is, why paganism sooner or later will win this fight.
