What really struck me was he was ACTUALLY playing down his struggles he endured with those two accidents. Very humble guy

Wow, I was a fan of Manfred since 1991 (his first WSM), and after watching this interview and realizing how humble of a man is he, I'm even more of a fan now. He has so much wisdom and honesty to his words. Live in and appreciate the moment and stop chasing a dream that you will never be happy with or fulfilled by. Thank you Manfred. You're a good soul.

@@stu73ke I would say i agree with this. I get where the comment is coming from but I don't tend to agree with statements that go with the idea that the gold all lays in the past. I hear a lot of these comments be it concerning athletes, movies, music etc etc..the gold is all still here..just look at strongman current day..we got Loz, Shaw, Z, Mateusz, Martins, Novikov, the Stoltmans, the characters and legends are amoungst us competing and putting it out there..i love the sport and these are good times to be a strongman fan..don't get me wrong guys like Manfred and Magnus ver are legends..but the legends continue..what impressed me about this interview was Manfred's story and attitude, this guy was at the top of his game then had it all taken away from him but found a silver lining..truly greatness..thats a strongman right there..

Gary Taylor-an absolute legend! Still can't believe a human being able to overhead press 600 lbs... what a terrific pressure it has to be for the wrists and shoulders. Most of the average guys can't even deadlift this weight.

Hey Loz, thanks for interviewing Manfred. He was my favourite Strongman of the early 90s and is great knowing how he's getting on.

He still have that charming, totally enchanting smile and he is happy despite all he has been through. It warms my heart. Truly inspirational. Much love from Sweden, Manfred!

My wife and I named our dog after Manfred Hoeberl, for his energy and how much fun he was to watch. Probably my favourite strongman of all time. Great work getting him on, Loz.

That's a really impressive interview. What he mentioned there about inner strength and satisfaction is true, and it makes sense that he has developped that attitude after surviving those terrible accidents. I think it's actually quite a miracle that he even survived.

Chance are he wouldn't have survived either of his accidents if he weren't so massive. He really had some serious ups and downs in his life. He was so close to beating Magnus back in '94.

The first strongman show I ever saw was WSM 1994. I was ten years old and Manfred was my favourite with his He-Man look. A true legend!

Strongman and bodybuilding aside, I needed to hear this message. What a guy!

Big Loz, you are a legend for inviting Manfred! Manfred was my favorite strongman when I started watching it in my teen years on Eurosport back in the 90's!! So much so, I chose 'Manfred' as my third name at my confirmation (which is ceremony in catolic church) when I was 15ish. Since 'Manfred' is completly exotic name here in Poland (let alone 25 years ago), you could imagine bishop's and everybody's around look on their faces, when bishop was saying to me "Dear Manfred, blah blah blah" during that ceremony :D Anyway, I can remember Manfred having the most outgoing and cheerful personality out of his peers and on top of that, he was one of the strongest guys and fan's favorite and if it wasnt for Magnus (and car crash obviously), he would surely win more titles and even WSM :)

good to see he found a path for fullfilement in life after his strogman career dwindled down in the aftermath of the accident and further injuries. Back in the 90's with no Internet, I could only know so much what happened. I was really rooting for him to get back to his former glory, when he appeared back in the competition 2 years after car crash and it was such such a disappoitment to see him getting seriously injured again before he could accomplish that goal. I suppose he chose wisely not to further pursuit the goal that slipped away from his hand by such a narrow margin.

He was one of my favorites in the days. Nice to hear from him again.

So nice that you interviewed Manfred! I still have his book 10 minutes to massive arms and use the training principles. I should even have an old video tape of a strongman show in Germany where I briefly met Manfred...those were amazing times!! 💪🏻

Glad to see Manfred so happy and positive after all he has been through. That’s a testament to the inner strength that made him such a great strongman. And again, so pumped that things in Strongman is possible veering back towards the all around athleticism that made the sport so great.

it shows how different strongman today is all these guys where doing Highland games 1 weekend strongman the next. most of the guys now are just doing a handful of shows a year and using months to prepare. says alot about the worth ethic of the older generation

It's the nature of sport. First it's pioneers, then enthusiastic amateurs, then pros, then it becomes about who can do the most extreme work in the run up to peaking for only a couple of events a year for freak performances

Absolutely brilliant character of WSM in the early to mid 90s where there was a real magic about the shows and the venues. Unlucky to not win it in 1994 but came up 2nd to one of the best. Great to see some humility in the world of strength and aesthetics.

Yeha, he don't seam happy tho. I can tell. That's the smile I make when I go thru rough times in some way. Words fool you thos micro expressions don't.

Manfred seems to be very happy at this point of his life 😊 For me this is very impressive, if you know about his huge accidents. A lot of people would have given up - but not him! I know Manfred is from Austria but as a german strongman fan you had two favorites in the 90s: Heinz Ollesch and of course Manfred 😉 So for me it's pretty cool to see him again and to listen to all the things he's talking with you. It's some kind of "feel good moment" at this saturday evening - so thanks, Loz! PS: At some points he sounds like Arnold Schwarzenegger when he's speaking because of his german accent 😜

When watch him back in the day l always thought he looked a bit lie a pirate with his head scarf on , we need more pirate strongmen like him!

Man this broght back some memories I was 10 years old back in 1994 watching my first strongest man ( with vague memories of Gary Taylors win the year before) . His battle with Magnus this year was epic. So nice to see him well. This brings back some memories, thanks Loz! Manfred was bigger than life, both physically and in his personality. I remember seeing those arms in magazines first, then WSM. His triceps reminded me of frozen turkeys you buy for Thanksgiving. Just massive. Get him in a pulling (rope pull, etc) event and they doubled in size. Good to see him happy and smiling. Thanks again for bringing him to us, Loz!

Got to love Manfred's philosophy post his strongman career, where he can look back on what he did with great fondness, but at the same time appreciate life to its fullest without all the pressure and expectations you live with daily when lifting and competing with yourself, especially to the world class standards that he did. It's quite refreshing... He seems chill and happy. And even though he mentioned not having picked up a weight in many years since his second accident, you can still tell from what you can see of him here that he's not exactly a small man! Genetics is the best foundation!

I´m sorry, but that wasn´t Manfred Hoeberl. That was the german powerlifter Michael Bruegger, who unfortunately died some years ago. Hoeberl also appeared in "Wetten dass"-TV show in 1991. with a bet that he could turn over ten cars in a certain time span and he won that bet. That was so to say his first offical appearance as a strong man.

Thats the interview I've been waiting for. Hoeberl was a beast back then. I remember him being the runner up at WSM 94 or 95 just 1 point behind the great Magnus ver Magnusson.

What an amazing, smart guy. Really appreciate you reaching out and organising this interview. Top notch stuff and learnt some important life lessons.

In 1991 I wanted to be as big as Manfred was. In 2004 I achieved my goal being bigger then the Manfred version of 2004. The lesson - never give up on your dreams!

Tanks for that great Interview with Manfred! I am also Austrian and I met him long ago in Essen at the Fibo. And as a Fan of him I followed his life and the tough Times he hat to go through. 1985-1995 is the golden age of strongman in my opinion. The characters, the charisma, the contrast of body types, personality, events etc..incredible athletes. Comparing the weight of today’s guys to this era is kinda silly. Those athletes competed hundreds of times in their careers, nowadays, some of the guys compete 5-6 times a year. Add the technology, the nutrition, recovery etc... to someone like Manfred and he probably would be 350lbs and still move really well. Nothing taking away from the strongmen of today’s era- both are/were incredible in their own way. Very interesting interview, Manfred still has that glowing personality.

This is the one I've been waiting for, thanks Loz.

I will watch the entire strong man competitions from 1977 to present. Manfred was one of my absolute favorites. Down to earth and great attitude.

Cheers for the interview, I really enjoyed it, as Manfred is one of my favourite SM as he always had a great attitude towards other competitors and the competition he was competing in. I had read in Magazines and on internet and watched TV shows about Manfred, his feats, and, more importantly, how he recovered from two near fatalities. The inspiration here is looking at his transition to and from SM competition with his underlining message; don't chase the same illusions attached or unattached to the shadows everyone else is, just to focus and be grounded in what you do to see these illusions and shadows that are given and in front of you that are meant to hinder you and your life for what they are, as that is the real challenge to obtain balance. Cheers :-)

He was a true personality and a true spectacle with those gigantic arms. He was an undeniable asset to the sport's growth and popularity. His auto accident was a tragedy for him and strongman. Glad to see today he is happy and healthy, though much reduced in bodyweight...

I loved to watch the shows when i was young. Was a great motivation for me to start lifting. I also were a big marvel fan at that times and seeing you lifting these monster weights. That was like superheroes coming to life. Thanks for these great times and i wish you all the best for everything you still want to achive or learn to be content whith being not wanting to achieve ;) And great respect for standing tall with a smile on your face after all these hits in your life.
