    As an incoming junior in college who is involved in more community work where my public speaking skills are more utilized as compared to volunteering in the hospital and such, this really set my heart at ease. It definitely gave me the reminder I needed that the work i'm doing is relevant to my journey. I know that may not have been your priority or first intention when you made this video, BUT THANK YOU!!! Wishin you the best of luck in everything :)

    Realize you are looking at your future selves. Don't set them apart. Also realize that "geriatric psychology' is often the same as end of life issues for anyone younger. Anxiety and depression are fairly normal reactions to anyone with shortening horizons.

    I'm starting medical school in August, and one thing I'm really scared of is getting emotional or emotionally invested with my patients. I'm normally a pretty strong person but something about hospitals and having lost a few family members while being there has made me become somewhat sensitive (not sure if this is the right word) about being there. I'm scared I'll have to give a family or patient some hard news and will start crying while doing so. Any advice on how to overcome this?

    I hope Jenny will make a video on this, it's a great topic. My two cents you'll learn to put distance between you and your patients, because otherwise you will burn yourself out. Also, you probably won't have to give anyone any hard news until you're a resident and by then, you'd have had 2 years of training, watching other people deal with tough moments.

    Again ... Very informative vlog! Thank you... Can you please do vlog on how you interact with patients like what helps you easily communicate with them and gain their trust? Also, if you are presenting how do you handle a question that you don't know answer to? Love your vlogs... Moving on to next one.

  • @drjennale

    +Freshnesss I think this just takes practice. I honestly still feel awkward at times but everyday and with every patient, you get better. I don't think there is a right or wrong way to communicate with patients. You just need to figure out what works for you. When asked questions you don't know, be honest. Say "I don't know but I will look that up and get back to you." Or you can talk out your thought process of what you do know. Most of the time preceptors ask you questions so they can determine where your knowledge gap is in order to teach you more effectively.

    My mom had alzheimers and passed away two years ago. My mom was healthy other then the alzheimers and I put her in hospice on May 6th and she passed on May 20th. when I went on the 6th for her care plan meeting my jaw dropped to the floor when they asked me about hospice. Something wasn't right with my mom though because her bottom lip was extremely swelled and bloody and I asked them if she had thrush. When I saw her on the 6th I cried because she no longer could open her eyes or talk.

    A great book on this topic is Being Mortal by Atul Gawande. It's always important to ask the patient what is most important to them when it comes to geriatric/palliative care. Seems like a simple thing but we sometimes forget to ask.

    After picking your speciality in the 3rd year of med school, say you pick surgery. Then how will you decide or get to experience on what type of surgeon you want to be. I really want to be a surgeon but I'm not exactly sure what kind. I'm thinking pediatric surgeon but how will I know for sure.

  • @drjennale

    @drjennale

    +Cassidy Collart To become a pediatric surgeon you need to do a fellowship after surgery residency. So I would presume you would figure it out during your 5 years of residency.
