Family Medicine Resident Doing Surgery Rotations ?!!

Hi everyone! Welcome back. Last week I posted a video on my orthopedic surgery rotation and a lot of you were very confused as to why as a family medicine resident I am still doing surgery or even doing rotation. I explain in the video that this is all part of my training and that there are very valuable things to be learned from a surgeon even as a family medicine physician - like how to do steroid injections for join pain or suturing for when FM works in the ED/urgent care. The scope of family medicine is so broad that I am still able to do all these things. As compared to Internal Medicine - they don't see kids or OB patients, hence they won't rotate through those departments.
I hope this gives you a better understanding of what residency is like. I don't follow Grays Anatomy but I heard they are surgery residents but they act more like internal medicine. Hope you enjoyed the video! If you have any other video suggestions - leave them in the comment section below :)

    I always thought family medicine is just about catching symptoms then sending the patient to a specialist. Didn't really think they are doing more than that. Nicely explained.

    @@drjennale Here in the Philippines some of the Internist/Specialists calls Family Physicians as General Practitioner being "Jack of all trade, Master of None", but looking at the Residency training program of Family Medicine, for me it is very efficient because we will be exposed to all other departments (obgyn,surgery,ortho,ophtha,IM, radio) making us more competent specially that the focus of FaMed is to do Primary Health Care and Ambulatory care catering both adult and pediatric diseases, there are also fellowship programs after the training. I will still pursue Family Medicine even if some of the Internist/Specialist bad-mouth FaMed. I do not dislike IM per se it's just that I am not happy with it; it is very stressful and always requires you to be at the hospital. I am more enthusiastic with FaMed because I like the versatility of it, you have connection with the entire family, you become more compassionate and empathic and the delivery of care is much more holistic.

    Hi dear, I 'm in my third year( almost done with it and about to start my forth year), I have been deciding between family and internal medicine. I'm more interested in the outpatient setting. And I love continuity of care as well. However. with internal medicine, I think you could still become a primary care physician. So, what is the real difference between the two in terms of residency and work after residency. Could you be more specific plz and give more clarifications. I would highly appreciate it.

    Have you done a video on how to select your family medicine residency program? How can you figure out the pros and cons of programs? When is it appropriate to reach out to residents in regards to programs that you are interested in? I think I am interested in being able to do a lot of procedures, urgent care visits, integrative care, manage chronic conditions, and keep my patients out of the hospital/ED. How can I select programs that will prepare me well for this?

    Thank you so much for this video! It really helped to shed some light on the real life world of medicine, haha. I have a question since you briefly mentioned in your video about 3rd/4th year med school vs being a resident... would you say that the 3rd and 4th year of med school really helped to prepare you in with how to approach patients, decide what you can or cannot prescribe, or anything in terms of just feeling closer to being an actual physician? Or did you get better at it through the practice of residency? I ask because I always feel like I have clinical butterflies and it makes me so nervous working in an entirely new setting and then just the thought of having to do things on your own for the most part is also intimidating. Hope this question made sense! Thanks again for all of your guidance! :')

  • @drjennale

    @drjennale

    6 жыл бұрын

    +Anna As a third and fourth year I never had to prescribe really. I was always asked what medications I'd give but never had to prescribe it myself (except maybe in the ER). As a resident I definitely still get those butterflies at times. But I think that should slowly go away the more confident I become and the more experience I get.

Are those fellowships that Family medicine can partake in? & is pathology consider a resident or fellowship? Thank so much for clarifying FM 👩‍⚕️! I read so many negative comments from student doc forums & other websites on FM & why a person shouldn’t go into! I am interested in allergy & immunology due to my personal experience with this field as a teenager though early 20’s (17 yrs to 20 yrs old). I’m definitely not in it for money! Which is what I see with some who only go into speciality such as radiology (I’m still interested in this field tho! But the yrs of residency is so long 😪) thanks again 👋🏽
