I'll say this, in hindsight it was a shitty thing for us fans to do. At the time however it had less to do with Paul himself and more with the fact that we were seeing way too much of him. Big Show and Kane were on tv so god damn much it became nauseating. Especially when both of them were pretty much far far removed from their primes at the time. They sapped the last drops of entertainment you could squeeze from those guys and it just wasn't fun seeing them on tv anymore. I have no desire to watch Paul wrestle anymore but as a commentator, as a guy who can help mentor the younger talent those are perfect roles for him in AEW.

Back then we foolishly assumed Big Show was done. The whole reason we got to chanting "please retire" is exactly the fact that WWE booked him like crap. If André was on TV every single week being humiliated by Hulk Hogan in the 80's, he wouldn't be considered as the greatest big man ever as he is nowadays. Familiarity breeds contempt, and after 20 years of overexposure we no longer saw a giant, we saw a tall slow man who couldn't go anymore. Had he been booked like Brock Lesnar, he would have been a spectacle, he would have been treated with respect by the fans, and he probably still be ready to go (let's just say his knees would have way less wear and tear).

Should they be taking up time on wrestlemania, though? Not talking about Big Show specifically, but other veteran wrestlers. Are they really being treated with respect when they're put in these goofy matches? Every so often, like 1x a yr, I check in on wresting. Every time, I am blown away at how huge swathes of the the industry is still trying to relive the attitude era. Or even worse, they're trying to relive the late 80's/early 90's, and putting 65 yr old wrestlers in the main event. They can't seem to figure out how to pull in new kids as fans, and can't seem to innovate at all. They should be hiring writers from Breaking Bad or some other long form drama, and seriously plot out storylines that actually work. They should be doing Fortnite crossovers. They should be cultivating young talent with fresh ideas. There's so much they could be doing. Instead, they're having Ric Flair fued with Mick Foley, or some other sad, tired idea. I wouldn't call Ric Flair's TNA years to be respectful. You don't do that to someone you respect.

The only threats to kane were taker, Austin and eventually the Rock. Big show I will give you though, although just another face in the nWo he was a legit freak, and Vince criticized WCWs booking of the guy, and proceeded to bring him in to be Austin's whipping boy right off the bat. While wcw couldn't do right by him, I think history will show the WWF didn't know how to either, and in many instances way worse with the comedy crap, the crying etc etc.

Imagine having basically the second coming of Andre the Giant working for you, but he's also athletic, healthy, and can actually talk, and telling him in no uncertain terms "You're a job guy now." People perceive him how they do because of YEARS of mismanagement. When you really think back on it, it's kind of amazing how poorly Paul has been treated his entire career. Imagine if they had used Undertaker the way they used Big Show. That should give you a sense of how silly WWE's treatment of Big Show really was when you think about it. I hope Paul can teach some of AEW's big guys like Lance Archer and Luchasarus how to work big.

  • @Matt-cr4vv

I’ll say again that he could’ve been used a lot better during his time in WWE than he was. But it also isn’t nearly as black and white as “you’re a job guy now”. It was a mix of a lot of things. Multiple people have mentioned that during his initial years in the company they never really went with him because he wasn’t fully invested and working hard. He was out of shape and smoking cigarettes etc. And he was asked to get in shape and wasn’t doing it and eventually it led to them sending him to a development territory to get in shape. You’re not gonna have a guy like that being the standard bearer of the company as your champion. That aspect is on Show. But in the end he was a 5 time world champion in WWE, which is nothing to sniff at. But at the same time he never really had long title runs and was never really viewed as the company’s top guy. So definitely could’ve been better in that aspect. WWE definitely fell short in the sense of how they booked him long term. They always seemed to flip flop him from being a face or heel and killed the credibility of those turns over that time. I think a lot of that could’ve been due to Show being a team player. He seems like a dude who was always willing to do what he was asked story wise and may have benefitted from saying no more often. But coming full circle to being told he’s a job guy deserves more context. By the time that happened by his timeline would’ve been around 2016. So Show was around 43-44. So being told he wasn’t going to be the top star and was going to be used to help build the younger guys reallt isn’t that surprising. It’s the life cycle of wrestling. In this same time period the Dudley’s came back and spent basically the whole time putting new day over. It’s just how it happens barring some exceptions like the really big names.

His time in WWE is interesting to analyze. Hard to say it was a successful one considering he was a five time world champion. And he was a signed wrestler there for around 22 years so he probably made a shit load of money there. But he also is one who could’ve been a lot more I think had they booked him differently during his time there. Show is a guy who sporadically would get booked as a giant but they always seemed to flip flop him from good to bad guy whenever he’d get going. I tend to think the reason they didn’t truly ever anoint him as a top guy and run with him for an extended time is less of an Andre thing and more because he wasn’t committed enough in their eyes for periods of time. JR has told stories about them getting on his ass about getting in shape and such and that he wouldn’t do it. When he did finally go out and do it he was fairly old unfortunately.

It's on Wednesdays at 8pm EST on TNT if you are in the US. Outside of the US, I'm not totally sure, you'd have to google that, but I know for sure they run in some international markets.

Kane got screwed so damn bad,.he went from being the big red machine to a ramdom masked guy hugging another guy while using his YES and a corporate guy who looked like he was both a mayor and general manager at the same time, big show on the other hand was one of those guy they didn't have an idea of what to do with him

Is WWE asking a 45 year old Big Show at the time to give back and put young guys over a bad thing? I agree he was benched the last several years and could have been used much better but putting over younger guys should have been a goal for him

Putting people over is fine but telling him he'll never main event again no matter how over he is isn't. It seemed like WWE would intentionally kill any momentum he had building to avoid being put in that situation.

Giant put over people since day 1 lol. In WCW he put young up and comer hulk hogan over in a match and then a sumo monster truck match. Then when Vince brought him in as a part of the ongoing Steve austin feud he became Steve's crash test dummy. He's not been used as good as he could of been by either company. Now in aew we'll see, he's older but knows he doesn't have to do all the crazy spots the little kids are doing out there. He could just overrun these smaller guys and it would make sense by the spectators view of things easily.

To his point at the end, it's Crazy Kane only ever held the WWE title once...for one day. And then held Heavyweight title for a time in 2010. He deserved better for a run of Kane of more than 20 years.
