Talk Is Jericho: Keith Lee’s Last Days At WWE

Ойын-сауық

Listen to the full podcast at talkisjericho.com
AEW Revolution is this Sunday, March 6th and one of AEW’s newest signings, Keith Lee, is an entrant in the Face of The Revolution Ladder Match! It’ll be the first-ever ladder match in his 18-year wrestling career, and he shares exactly how he feels about that! Keith also gets real about his serious battle with COVID and the post-infection complication that nearly forced him to give up wrestling forever. He discusses the circumstances surrounding his release from WWE, the three failed tryouts it took to get there in the first place, his matches with Randy Orton, Roman Reigns, and Brock Lesnar, and the catchphrase inspired directly by the late, great Dusty Rhodes! Keith remembers his time at Ring of Honor and the match with Dominik Dijakovic that changed his wrestling career in an instant, their final indie bout at PWG, and why they didn’t have a bigger feud at NXT. He tells the stories of “Bask In My Glory” and the Bearcat gimmick, and reveals what Vince McMahon said to him in the middle of a live Monday Night RAW.

Great that he's well spoken, but is that going to draw people to caring about him as a wrestler? Plenty of well spoken wrestlers out there who are able to get fans to care about their in ring work due to their engaging promos and ability to get people excited about them. Being thoughtful and well spoken are awesome traits for an office job or a public speaking gig

Vince should have just let him be him. How do you not see the potential in a man whos big like he is, but isn't just a hulking, angry monster? I liked how he was. He was a well spoken but agile, hard hitting big man. Even with the bear cat. Don't just come to him just because you think he needs something. Heck at least plan out the gimmick before hand. What on earth was the "Bearcat" gimmick aside from Lee growling? I felt so bad for Lee not getting what he deserved on the main roster. My favorite guy within NXT. I actually went to NXT Takeover Portland and just thought he had such a prescience. I hope AEW will utilize him properly. He deserves to be on top.

Bearcat was very clearly supposed to be a mindset, a switch that flipped in the mind of Keith Lee. Not an intricate story but a new status quo presentation going forward. Sort like how Mark Henry went from friendly happy-go-lucky Mark Henry to heel Mark Henry in early 2011 to angry, scary, intense Hall of Pain Mark Henry by mid 2011 due to a switch clicking in tje mid of Mark Henry and channeling that anger and aggression full time on camera going forward. No doubt a similar ibte tin was in mind for Keith Lee and no doubt Vince had high hopes for Keith Lee otherwise wouldn't have left gorilla mid broadcast to sit down and communicate his vision for the mindset and presentation of on-camera Keith Lee.

Even adjust his move set so each side of the character shines. Like combining both sides of what the Alpha Academy currently are but in on man because Keith Lee has that range and that much ability

The thing about Vince is that he will rarely be satisfied with a gimmick unless he feels like he played some part in its creation, and the rare times that he does tolerate independently creative wrestlers, it doesn't last for long and they either conform or get released. So you're absolutely right that success in the WWE mostly coming down to being adaptable (or more accurately, malleable) to Vince's whims, and when WWE was the only real game in town, wrestlers were creatively shackled if they wanted the big bucks. However, with AEW that's less of an issue, and many wrestlers can finally flourish with their own gimmicks, and WWE's missed opportunities are no longer complete losses for the fans.
