Hell, a few weeks ago executives at WBD said that through all platforms available, dynamite got over 2 million viewers live. It’s time wrestling fans move on from live cable ratings when we have soooooo many ways to watch tv without paying outrageous monthly bills for tv. That viewership talk should have stopped as soon as the first ever wrestling fan mentioned wwe went from weekly 9 million on Monday nights in the early 00s to barely scratching 2 mill now. It could be said wwe has also failed to beat the wwe they used to be. That says a lot about their quality of content now more than aew still pumping out spectacles and making more money from tv contracts and finally moving on to doing more ppvs (breaking news: they will be starting to run 12 ppvs a year now very soon). That says A LOT about the state of the company. Almost 5 years in and they’re still making moves that aren’t costing them major losses. That’s more that could be said for a company like TNA that started falling off badly around year 3-4. They scratched A SURFACE… aew BROKE that ceiling for an American promotion and still hasn’t slowed down when it comes to building the business internally.

    What I love about these interviews of guys that worked at the company for a long time, is that Vince just isn't what so many fans believe he is. He was totally cool and nice to Jericho out the door. Even had him on Broken Skull Sessions and he openly discussed AEW there. I think anyone that comes in and does good work for Vince, he personally cares about as a friend or even family, even if he's the one feeling like he has to let them go. Which is why he has let people go, and then brings them back later. He always leaves the door open.

    I don't think the real question should be can AEW surpass WWE. WWE is Disney, they're a full fledged global media company. All AEW needs to do is focus on the US, Canada and Western Europe... This is the part some people who don't like the WWE product anymore don't understand. When WWE is breaking ground on a new market, they're not concerned whether or not we like the segment with Jinder Mahal, and we all know damn well the Punjabi Prison Match VS Orton will be garbage with a sprinkle of Khali run-in... But the Indian market doesn't know that... That's billions of people exposed to WWE watching THEIR guy win the title... AEW can take 30% of the US/Canada market, which is more than enough to be a money making, profitable business, be where WWE was about 25 years ago size-wise and still make a LOT of wrestlers a LOT of money... They're playing on two different levels which is EXACTLY why Tony Khan keeps saying "We're not competing with WWE." Because they're not on the same economy of scale as WWE.

  • @ArcaneAzmadi

    @ArcaneAzmadi

    10 ай бұрын

    ...not a great example. While Great Khali is a national hero in India, Jinder didn't even manage to get over there because they know damn well he's a Canadian. His World Championship run was a deliberate attempt by WWE to expand into India, and it _flopped._ They even had to cut down the number of shows they did on their tour there because it simply wasn't selling. Regardless, it's not like AEW could ever surpass WWE, that's like asking whether any restaurant chain could ever surpass McDonalds. The way capitalism works, once a company establishes themselves as a clear #1 they will remain #1 _forever_ no matter what, because the majority will continue to flock to whatever the majority are already flocking to, like a snake eating its own Big Mac. Although I think if there's one market where AEW could _easily_ overtake WWE if they continue to focus on it, it's the UK.

  • @FloridaManRacer

    @FloridaManRacer

    9 ай бұрын

    @@ArcaneAzmadi I agree with most of what you say, but being #1 isn't forever. Something eventually changes that shakes things up. SEARS Roebuck was the #1 retail store for almost 90 yrs, then Wal Mart came along and they fell way out of 1st place, then Amazon came along and put them clean out of business. Its all about how long it takes to innovate beyond the competition...

    There are elements here of the Chris Jericho that everyone loved, but there's a lot of Hulk Hogan in this interview - you know, the guy Chris Jericho criticized for keeping young guys in WCW like himself down. The difference being that Hulk honestly COULD justify it, just by being Hulk Hogan. Production was often greater than what you had to tolerate (TNA stint notwithstanding). Jericho has never been that dude, and never will be. His ego has been out of control these last few years. Combine that with him being a snake that always latches on to the latest “hot” act and siphons all their heat, and I’ve absolutely come to dislike him lately.

    Jericho has put over pretty much every young wrestler he's worked with. Has he won some matches? Of course. But his name wouldn't have value if all he did was lose. Show me who Hogan put over in WCW besides Goldberg who was already over? Jericho has put over Starks, Action A., MJF, and countless others while elevating people like Sammy and the inner circle (now JAS) along the way. Your argument is based AF and shows you don't watch the product. Honestly you wasn't even worth making this comment for.

    @@gmac673 Err, but it's just not true. Jericho having the main title solidified it as legit and then him having it put Moxley right in the centrepiece of the main event. Although Mox was a draw, the feud with Jericho made it legitimate. His feud with MJF also moved the guy on from his endless dreary Cody feud and then the post Cody confusion he was in. The two Stadium Stampede matches were excellent and the first in particular is one of my favourite matches ever. He was involved with them in a big way. He's kept Jake Hager on telly when it would have been easy to lose him a la Miro or Lance Archer. His labours of Jericho feud was pretty fun. He's stalled a bit since forming the JAS because most of the JAS are pretty terrible and Sammy has far outgrown that angle now, but first half of AEW Jericho was on fire and making stars and angles left right and centre. If anything the JAS is the problem at the moment because they're still trying to book the JAS like the Inner Circle but whereas the IC were cool heels, and then tweeners, the JAS are just dull and full of undeveloped characters. I can't even tell you who's in them to be honest. Jericho is in need of freshening up but people saying he never puts people over or spitting on him are being disingenuous. He doesn't have to be your cup of tea, that's cool, but the online mob mentality against him that's growing is just full of untruths and half remembered nonsense.

    5:15 the originals made AEW safe for CM Punk, Bryan Danielson, Adam Cole. CM Punk: having to endure the Page promo, the locker room broke out from the Elite and mega (the lawyer of AEW) which ended in a brawl, Jericho saying Punk is a cancer, the Elite and Jericho breaking out fake news to Meltzer. Bryan Danielson: Suffering a huge concussion in Anarchy at the Arena (the match stipulation Jericho created and match in which he was part for his concussion) Adam Cole: suffering a huge concussion at Forbidden door. Yeahhhh pretty safe to say Jericho only cares on "cementing his legacy" no matter how much damage he does to AEW actually.

    I get to a degree that there was some legacy risk for established names taking an initial dive on an unproven company like AEW but the risk a lot of them like to sell it as being gets hyped more than it really was. Guys like Jericho or JR, and I don’t fault them whatsoever and would do the same exact thing as them if I had the leverage like they did, locked down huge financial guarantees over multiple years whether the venture was a success or failure and had zero financial risk by taking the gamble knowing that they were financially set whatever the outcome was. And judging by what was said at the time they were paid the most they ever had been to make their move. And if it had flopped how hard would it have been to just say why they took the gamble, point out the difficulty of that succeeding and mentioning that they were being paid the most they ever had been to take the risk so they did? Their legacies were long established and I highly doubt they’d have had any major issues going back considering they gave Vince a chance to match the deals and the deals were so good Vince told them to take the deals. Their biggest risk was realistically bruising their egos with a giant amount of money for doing so and Vince laughing about them bleeding the idiot kid who thought he’d actually have a chance to compete with him. And he points out all the time that what he had available with the WWE wasn’t appealing anyways so what was he truly risking? Respect for taking a gamble but doesn’t seem like it would’ve been a hard decision to make and props to them because they earned what they were offered.

    I don’t know if I agree with the comment that John Moxley is bigger than Dean Ambrose and a viewers standpoint. At this current state, AEW can’t even sell 2000 tickets to their weekly show.

    No, he isn't. This is ridiculous unfounded nonsense and I'm more than fed up of it. Does Jericho always have the main title? Nope. Does Jericho always win his feuds? Nope. Does he habitually lie? Not that other wrestlers say. Does he get hired only his friends? Nope. Does he wrestle the same match and same feud to preserve his legacy? Nope. Jericho isn't anything like Hogan. Jericho DOES believe his own hype but, frankly, he should because he's great. And all the same marks moaning about him how all agreed and moaned that he was held down in WWE by HHH or whoever... now they've turned on him because he dared say anything about the all saving all saintly CM Punk, and stood into locker room leader mode. And got himself over. How dare he be successful. He's only ever any good if he's not pushed and then the moaners can moan about that instead. But frankly, I'm bored with this moaning.
