I liked the scavenger video too. If you only have line and hooks you can scavenge for plastic bag that makes a good lively looking tail pinned with the hook and 2 inches or so of drinking straw slid down to the hook. Stripped through the water with a piece of stick for cast weight and or float. The purpose made stuff definitely works best though if you're canny enough to put it in your kit... I love fishing/hunting. Good to see you enjoying yourself Andrew. Time out for ourselves by ourselves is healthy, especially in such beautiful surroundings. Tell no-one buddy! Cheers. 💜👍 Universal Sovereign Citizen

Suggestions for the survival fishing kit: 1) Downsize the reel and rod. Get a small reel that will fit in your hand and load it with either number 6 or 8 pound test line. 2) Get a telescoping rod that is only 5 to 6 feet n length when fully extended. The smaller reel and rod will easily fit onto your backpack. 3) Do not camouflage float bobbers; they are designed to do two things: a) hold the bait at a specified depth and b) serve as a strike (bite) indicator. If it is camouflaged, you may not see the bite.

A great backpacking kit I've found is a 2-piece ice fishing rod and a small size 50 spinning reel. They take up suck little space in the pack and can be much easier to cast when you're surrounded by trees. Obviously you're not going to be bombing any casts to the middle of the lake but, a lot of the time there is plenty of action right by the shore as we saw in this video.

One thing I have in my PSK is a small Blue Fox Wiglstik. It is basically a shaped piece of plastic with a hole in it to feed the line through to the hook. It comes with a treble, but that could be changed. Although no longer made, one can see it as vintage on eBay to get the idea. Durable, does not take much room, or weigh much. I mention it as I always wondered if one could craft one's own from shaping a piece of toothbrush handle. I don't know why it was discontinued since it caught fish; perhaps it did not catch fishermen or fisherwomen. I also have some Gremlin Green removable split shot made of tin. They avoid the possibility of lead contamination to your kit, yourself, and the environment. They also will make a mark on paper so that adds another use.

One fishing kit item I’ve used for years when fishing with worms is a worm threader, which is a long metal tube beveled to a a point like a hypodermic needle but not sharp with a wood or plastic handle on the other end. You thread the tube through the worm and place the hooks into the beveled end and pull the leader taunt slipping the worm over the hook and up the leader leaving the end of the worm hanging off. Because the majority of your bait is secure on the leader and hook and your tackle is not visible. The other plus is that your bait will hold up to many more casts, and any body who has been fishing with kids knows they like to cast a lot. Whether this is a must for an emergency kit is up to the user. But if you haven’t tried one with the family fishing trip you should. I know they were originally made for plastic worms but I’ve used them on night crawlers for over 30 years 👍

Sir, T Y for the banjo video. I am wondering if the water body is a slough, pond, old riverbed, river lake, etc. You are an expert fisherman and teacher, your kids are lucky. I prefer stouter tackle as a rule, but those lures look like winners. I might mention that very heavy sinkers (in the many ounces) make effective self-defense objects that may not be readily vulnerable to arbitrary confiscation.

Andrew have you heard of worm jerkey? Cut up worms, put them on a variety of smaller hooks, then let them dry out. Pack them in your fishing kit and save a huge amount of time finding bait, or use when colder weather makes it impossible to find live bait. I've been doing it for years and fish bite worm jerkey as much as fresh worms. In my experience anyway.

I have a rather heretical notion about fishing gear in survival kits. When "survival" became a topic was post-WWII. That was the first time that city folk actually outnumbered farmers, so for city folk who never spent time in the field prior to the military, this was new. They packed based on military manuals meant for aviators, and mostly those in the Pacific. The Book Says... have a fishing kit. So everyone carried fish hooks, when "country folk" just did it anyway. And because it was enshrined by The Book as blessed by GI, it got stuck there. But for most people who are lost, all it's going to do is keep them near water, which means they have water and are easier to find by air search. But a couple hooks weigh nothing, and are even useful in town- ever gone fishing for keys in a storm drain?
