I am always impressed with people that can actually catch fish. I got all kinds of artificial lures. Natural bait including worms, catopa tree catapilers, crickets, grasshoppers, chicken entrails, stinkbait for catfish. Nibblet corn, cat food mixed with cornflakes, marshmellos, You name it, I tried it. Nothing works. Many times fished using the same bait others are using, just 10" away from where the hook lines are set. They get fish. I feed the fish. Same with hunting. All I see on the day of the hunt is mosquitoes. If anything is caught is some bluegill that is 3" long, mouth to tip of tail. Not even worth while to skin and clean. Fifteen minutes to get the dame aomunt of fish meat as a single peanut. I hope there will never be an apocalypse. I'll starve to death. When I go to my favorite fishing hole. I'll see fish jumping out of the water catching bugs. The moment I set out a fishing rod. It's complete silence. Thus the reason I don't fish and hunt anymore. I can be much more sussessful by going to Micky Dee's for a McFish sandwich, light on the tarter sauce. No cheese please. I quit that Frontier thing a long time ago.

eagle claw colapsible rod with a spinning reel on it has caught alot of fish for me. I leave it in the truck with a tackle box similar to yours with hooks, sinkers, rooster tails bobbers and beetle spins. A little pack of trout magnets work well too. panfish love them as much as rainbows do.

I have been using Daiwas since the 80's and they have always been doing a great job. They are pretty affordable too. Really enjoy your fishing vids because it is pretty evident fishing brings out the kid in you. I know your time is pretty filled up, if you ever wonder what to do as far as youtube summer vids go for a fishing series. Your happiness during this activity is contagious.

Talked to a older Asian ex boat fisherman. Guy was using a folding box cutter for bait, line cutting etc… started up a convo about it. Said he had been using that style knife for decades. Easy to replace, always razor sharp, can withstand commercial fishing abuse , and doesn’t matter if lost or damaged . Can easily replace it. Very interesting approach, any thoughts? I might follow his lead.

I have to agree with you. As being a fireman, you have to be a jack of all trades. EMS, extrication‘s for vehicles, building construction, plumbing, wiring,. I think being well-rounded is a good thing, as opposed to being a specialist at one specific thing, and not good at anything else. But! Having that one special skill set brings value to the team.

I was so interested in everything you were saying tell you just all of a sudden went off without saying what you usually say. I have an old Zebco that I've had for 13 years since we moved here and that thing has been excellent I also bought my grandson a Zebco when he thought he was too old for his Spider-Man rod so I took his Spider-Man rod and made me a cat fishing rod out of it and honestly I don't know how many catfish I have caught on that thing I've lost count but when they are too big to reel in with that little rod then I grab that line and Pull It in by hand. The plastic one you said y'all used to sell I hope y'all do get those back I love that one. I saw Shawn one time he had a piece of cane pole and I like that so much till I made me one and it works pretty good it doesn't hang up and the reason for that is you have to smooth out that little rib that's on the cane and probably like the plastic one you used to sell the one I made out of a cane pole floats also. I wish I could find some of that large cane pole and I'll probably run across some at some point and I'll definitely get me some of that. That one that you showed that had a little pouch to go in that one was awesome also but I believe I like the one that you sell the best, besides the one I made of course. This is been a great video and you made a lot of sense, there's all kind of different ways to fish and all kind of different tackle to use. When I lived in Oregon I learned how to fly fish and I really did like that I just never did continue it when I came back. Anyway thanks for the video enjoy these kinds like this actually enjoy all you put out so on that note stay vigilant.

Daiwa mini is good but i prefer the dock runner ugly stik or the dock demon. Hand reels are great for portability ease but i have better luck with a rod with larger fish. A good dip net can also get you some lunch in a pinch. A makeshift minnow trap is an underappreciated food source, too. Last week fishing the grand river i pulled out my minnow trap baited with only a pinch of bread and hauled up a water snake, a few large creek chubs, 2 dozen minnows, and a crayfish. It made me pause and rethink survival food gathering for a moment lol Im also a big fan of trot lines when it comes to filling my belly. Float fishing is a close second. Spring poles too. Passive fishing is the way to go for survival, akin to trapping. A gig head or the makings of one is always a must carry for me as well. Justy two cents and a few extra nickels.

I like the Cuban fishing reels, (thats what they are called in Florida). Its just a ring about 6 or 8 inches in diameter. You can grip them very well and can pull in some monster sized fish. It's mostly used for salt water, but if you use smaller line and tackle it works just fine for fresh water. Ive caught lots of bass and catfish on mine. I keep it in a small bag, the extra tackle stores in a coupleof little tins (Altoid tins) and nest in the middle of the reel inside the pouch.

We used to fish the overgrown creeks with children's rods, you know, the ones made by zebco with mickey mouse or Donald duck on them. We just carried hooks and split shot and would dig worms or catch grasshoppers or minnows, and we would bring home 60 or 80 brem and bass and warmouth. We would cut palmetto fronds with We long stems for stringers. We would run the stem through the gills and push the stem into the mud at the bank to keep the fish fresh and in the water.

Thats a nice fish. I went fishing prob 40-50 times in my life, and I only caught something bigger once. It was a 20lb carp, and I accidentally hooked his tail playing with a line and bare hook at the dock our dads were fishing. They netted it and made me take the pics of them holding it LOL. I had found a four leaf wood sorrel a few mins before and i thought if I ate it, I would have good luck. Not with fishing, but with anything in general. 9 yr old girls are whimsical types and I thought the wood sorrel was a four leaf clover. Neither, of course, give you any type of 'luck'.

I tend to keep a smaller tackle box than Dave had with various sized hooks up to 2/0 and some bank line and a spool of pline

Great video Dave! Fishing videos are always good. May I suggest trying an ice fishing spinning rod and reel to your arsenal. They range from 24 to 30 inches, ultra light to medium action, and the reels usually have a very good drag. A piece of PVC pipe of appropriate size and a couple of end caps keep them safe.
