About 35 years ago I was fishing the South Jettie at Ponce Inlet and got. 2 oz. Pyramid sinker stuck in some rock about 50 feet out. I pulled on the line to break it off but it came loose and that sinker came launching outta the water like a Polaris Missle going about 200 MPH and it and it hit me right square in my right knee cap. Yeah..... That hurt.

Yeah I never pull straight up for that reason I always want the water to absorb the energy from whatever is on that line or even the line itself I had that happen too if there is tall grass, bushes or a tree definitely stand behind that. Some people don’t want to be looked at weird but you will be looked at a lot more weird with an eye missing

I use something in moving streams called a flex-o-drop sinker. It has a swivel at one end, you run it like a fish finder with a small jig or some bait. Its essentially a pipe cleaner filled with shot so it undulates like a snake. It almost never hangs up unless you pause and it drops into a snag. Otherwise it scoots over them. Which is where the fish are.

I thought that was the point of the sinker to begging with? To get the line to sink, but mot enough that it touches the bottom. Hard part for me is knowing what weight will do. lol i fished maybe twice in my life. And bobbers are kinda the same except they float and give visual feed back to the fisher, and from above instead of below. To help, understand my dumb ass… i think of them as pulleys lol no matter, bait has to stay at eye level of fish. So if they seek bugs on surface, bobber? If they eat at floor a sinker? Reminder, I’m no fisher lol

What he's failing to explain is that you need a 10'-12' rod to get a 3'-4' leader for this to work. If you have a 7'-8' rod, your leader won't be long enough to get to the bottom.

  • @thegreatoutdoors3366

It works just fine, we use a 7 foot rod and any leader length you want, a shorter leader will make it easy to see when the fish bites. The advantage of a slip float is you can set it whatever depth you want, I’ve even fished 40 feet deep with a slip bobber.

@@1BigMistakeeI should make a video about my slip bobber setup for fishing jetties. You get a string bobber stop that can be tightened anywhere on the line to the depth you want to fish. I usually fish lingcod and rockfish with a slip bobber. If the water is dirty I use a short leader (less than a foot) and fish very close to the bottom, and if the water is clear I use a longer leader (2 to 3 feet) and keep the lead weight further off the bottom. Good luck!

I avoid where the current is strongest, my best catches are at the edge of the current spill. Carolina rigged live shrimp is my go to. Avoid current that is pulling the bait towards you. I try to target where the bait might be pooling. Rarely get snagged but it will happen eventually. if you're using a bobber in current make sure you have some type of weight holding the bait straight(jig head/splitshot)
