@Cole Johnston where we live, the law requires to release any caught fish less than 20 cm in length. So, people do fish to eat but still have to catch and release a lot.

Awesome video with a great positive message. If there is any little bit of information i can share is that switching out treble hooks is a great idea. I do a lot of bass fishing and i replace my spooks, rattle traps, rooster tails, and crankbaits with inline hooks. Hook up ratio is less but its worth it to be able to lip a bass with out getting hooked myself! Stay safe folks! Tight lines!

When replacing trebles on lures you may need to add weight to replace what you have removed for balance . This can be done by using Storm suspend strips (I think they are called in the states) also remember a sizes in singles are different to trebles. There are charts available out there to make the job easier. We also have a semi- circle hook here in UK, it’s slightly easier to get a worm on. 👍

Treble hooks were a staple in my early years of pier, jetty, and surf fishing. We used treble hooks on float rigs for speckled trout and as a "sneaky pete" hook on king mackerel leaders. Only use them now on mirror lures and sea hawks.

I remember the barbless hooks I used. Those are great to use on catch and release. Very challenging to keep the fish on during the fight. And of course much less pain and damage to the fish when removing the hook. Just use a plier and pinch the barb in to make your own barbless hook.

I'm going to replace the trebles on a bunch of my lures with barbless singles. It's mostly to protect the many undersized pike you catch here, whether you want to or not. For such fierce predators, pike are kind of delicate and their huge mouths are prone to really serious hook extraction problems. Also, I troll a bit in some weedy places, so singles shouldn't harvest so many weeds. I would rather miss a strike than kill a fish.

Trebles are a necessary evil for soft baits like cheese, dough balls and such. Not that I target catfish that often but if I do I'll probably be using treble hooks. Also I use a lot of older lures for bass just because I inherited them, old lipless crankbaits, topwater plugs, old wooden rapalas, I leave the trebles on. For other rigs I do like to switch the lures to an inline hook especially since I got into saltwater fishing, and for surf/pier fishing its usually circle hooks or ringed live bait hooks for live lining.

Thanks to your channel I now use circle hooks which work great with certain fish that are usually hard to catch. So i finally caught a monster Steenbras or Pig nose grunter. Thanks so much for the advice!

I have used a treble hook on spinners and it takes me 15 to 30 sec to remove. With a standard hook I have spent up to 3 minutes removing the hook. I feel that a treble hook is easily removed from the fish.

i feel like that inline hook on the spook tail end, should be turned the other way, so the the hookset would be on the top of the mouth.

I use treble hooks only when the regs allow them and when I intend to keep the fish I catch. They should never be used if your intent is to catch and release.

I've never liked treble hooks for all the reasons you listed I've loved fishing since I was five and you've changed the way I'll fish having the info on how to change out the treble hooks properly instead of trial and error. People who think fishing is simple are terribly misinformed. Vids like this make me fall in love with fishing all over again. Subbed!

Just get pliers for trebles. Trebles don't gut hook & they usually stick right in the lip. If you are new to fishing don't be turned away by "danger" to the fish or yourself using them. I use them with 90% of the time for bass rarely screwing a fishes mouth. J hooks on the other hand have went straight through the eye or skull of many fish ive caught. Choosing hooks is more of an experience/preference & location thing. Like if you're fishing a grassy pond or a high concentration of seaweed trebles wouldn't be ideal.

I didn’t start switching all my trebles until I started fishing saltwater exclusively ... I was pulling up fish in a ball of hooks and line because they seemed to be a lot more aggressive then bass ... the would have one hook in the mouth and one in the tail bent in half ... it was a huge pain ... in lines for me 😬👍🏼👍🏼

@@lendog725 calling me wrong isn't the best route for conversation. I posted this due to my experiences with treble hooks. Only once have i had a smallmouth that caught it's body hooked. I've been using trebles since i started fishing & 9/10 the back treble is hooked in the mouth while the other(s) are loose. So from experience i have had a smooth run with trebles. Your experiences are different which is fine. You don't have to use them.

@@rdo6566 yes, it's a preference & experience type deal. The problem i see when trebles cause unnecessary harm is when someone sets the hook as they would a j hook.
