Fantastic tutorial. I am 63 and just learning. Find this to be of immense use.
I am so grateful for TTEdge and the information that you provide. There are zero places near Kansas City to get coaching that I know of at this point. I heard about your site in a podcast by Expert Table Tennis, Ben Larcombe. Looking forward to learning as much as I can through your coaching. Thanks!
yes ahmed the long tennis style backhand is good for show and after trying to keep it all tight with minimum motion in matches all the time it feels great to just let one rip every now and then without a care where your arm or hand ends up, love it!
really a best video regarding explanation of back hand topsipn i have ever seen on youtube. well done guys
what I like about these videos' from other videos', is that mistakes are shown, rather than just how to do the shot.
Best damn video on teaching how to hit the backhand...and there are some good ones out there. This one has given me so much insight and excitement on trying the techniques right away. Thanks.
Best tutorial video i have seen. Simple and straight forward information qhich you can start to use straight away in your practice. Looking forward to more videos - mike
very detailed. I also love the slo-mo shots as they add even more to the instruction :)
Excellent video. Thank you very much, some very good points covered.
WoW..what a comfort and satisfaction while playing the shot.. Its simply peaceful,,!!:)
Very nice material. Thanks!
Excellent video. Thank you!
this pro makes it look easy. fantastic! I cant wait to try it for myself
this is amazing. Kudos!
excellent explanation of the technique. video is informative, yet ez to watch...kudos
though my english isn't good, I could understand most of your explaination. thanks dude! support ttEDGE from south korea :-)
It’s interesting how backhand techniques have changed from this video. We learn to do much more compact strokes on backhand now
Very good tips..I have everything up to scratch but my backhand so hopefully after using these techniques it will help me in my first tournament =)
Thanks, really great video that helped me loads :)
Nice! Helped me a lot thank you
wow....this is fire!
Really good videos
Nicely explained
Excelent video,
Maybe the best backhand style, it seems to be working well for me and I am improving my level.
Thank you! Because of this, I have one of the best back-hands in my club. xD
This is the best videos I've seen on KZread describing how to to do a backhand. My only query is what to you do if you want to do a slow or heavy topspin backhand loop. Cheers
THIS IS SO TRUE. I WAS EXPERIMENT WITH THIS WRIST ACTION. CONSEQUENLY MY BACKHAND BECAME MY DOMINATE SIDE. i got some slack about it for a while. "PEOPLE SAID IT WOULD MAKE MY shot inconsistent, i just ignored everyone at the club, cause the just made no sense to me. IF THAT BALL IS SPINNING IT WILL GO IN. IT WAS DIFFICULT TO TIME ON MY FOREHAND, BUT IM STILL TRYING IT.
Possibly the most instructive backhand training video I've seen yet. I imagine stroking even further forward would produce more power, si? Thanks
Good Job. Thanks
Best backhand tutorial on youtube
O_O... amazing video!!! Fantastic work... subscribing....
amazing
Its been 5 months since i posted that comment. Thanks for the feedback, and i agree with you, i am learning the shorter technique backhand to add to my arsenal as i have noticed the recovery is to long, especially if the opponent topspins back at close range. But still the tennis style is good for show xD
Learn a lot thx
Nice video thanks
Very nice to see pro TT players taking some time for TT fanatics (on youtube) Hoped to find a training vid from the pro himsel about the forehand topspin. And to be more precise a vid were I can find an answer to opponents who block my topspin back to my body (turning point) al the time. Don't really know how to deal with that problem. Maybe you have some advice? Thx in advance!
william, basically your just starting with your racket and wrist below the table height and come upward butjust before u make contact with the ball, u close the racket face(this is what i do i asked just to make sure whether i got the stroke right. if imwrong please suggest changes.) excellent points about the down the line topspin
An incoming backspun ball would be curling downwards, so that to seize it would require meeting it at a very slightly dipped location, just as a topspun ball would be slightly arc-ed upward and would require meeting it at a slightly arc-ed location. In both cases, however, upon being 'seized', the ball is aggressively topspun horizontally, as level as possible, just over the top of the net.
@anvimi It's a technique. The fundamentals are there. Liam Pitchford's style is just that, a different style. Choose the one that you prefer. I watched William in live matches many times and his BH was rarely in trouble even against players far higher ranked.
@ahsancomsats yeah you have to add more wrist the higher up you play i actually figured out this stroke on my own
Nice dance moves. 3:31
@zakc01 Timing and practice! As the video mentioned, you won't always get the same shot so you need to work on how to adjust timing to different shots, which will make you more consistent. Also you should generally be hitting the ball in the center toward the outer part of the racquet for backhands.
Can i make a response video to my backhand technique? Its actually quite different from the traditional table tennis styles as i use the Lawn Tennis style one hand backhand setup and follow through! It doesn't bother me as i can hit it consistently but i want to know if it has limitations compared to your method (fan of roger federer lol)
quá hay!
This is a very difficult backhand topspin as at 50 seconds the wrist is turned like a hook. I am fine with topspin and now I should practice more to get that broken wrist and this should be a killer so long that I get the ball back on the opponent side. I believe this technique is only for block return ( and deadball). For backspin the racket angle should be around 70 to 90 degree to the floor. Is that correct?
I'm thinking it pays off always to stroke forward, horizontally and level with the table surface as much as possible in order to counteract either the downward (of a backspin) or upward (topspin) trajectory of the incoming ball - by seizing the ball as quickly and aggressively as possible on contact right off the bounce. It looks to me that this is how Zhang Jike and D. Ovtcharov are able to attack almost any ball no matter the spin.
William, It's tough to tell from the video, but it looks like you take the ball a little bit closer to the tip of the racket, instead of in the middle. I'm guessing this is done to get more racket speed at contact and therefore more spin? Or maybe I'm just imagining things?
Thank you so much. Really helpful. Much better than PingSkills' tutorial.

I agree
Is the best
@BeatRider44 thanks man
Bagus kang
Henzell's backhand was effective during the match with WLQ in 2008
Đánh trái tay có bắt buôc phải dung cổ tay không nhỉ? Không dung cổ tay có được không?
could a similar technique also be applied to the Reverse Penhold Backhand?
@tabletennisedge By stroking further forward I mean a slightly more lunging effort in the direction of your intended precise target on the other side. It would probably result in your right shoulder pointed more forward in that same direction at the final phase of the stroke, rather than it remaining stationary and EVEN with the other shoulder or square to the table. Might that not give more forward uumph! to the ball?
when i play my backhand sometimes its really fast and sounds good but most of the time it doesnt . how do i get it to hit the sweet spot more
against backspin it's the same stroke but start lower and more vertical?
speed spin and contol all are equally important
well I started off following the same but eventually came to know out by myself that this technique works well if you have specific grip as he is holding the bat with thumb pointing up . If you see Ma Long , he has same standard grip for both forehand and backhand ,if you can adjust with your grips then this technique will suit your game.

Malong uses different grips aswell, and puts his thumb onto the rubber as well.

Its all about adjustment you see , every player has developed muscle memory according to his/her feelings.
looks a hell lot like jorgen perssons technique!!
against backspin it's same stroke but more vertical?
For a lefty, this is something that should be go to killshot. You can do a half block/half topspin for a couple of volleys, then really crank on it if the opposition (usually a rightie) refuses to go up the line.
william has one of the best backhand technique and uses it as his main weapon against top players in the world. his world ranking is 96 in the world .what is your current ranking krismdts98..?.Show us your video if you have better technique.
NICE !!!! william henzell #1
@Ivan0v93 i play in the 2.bundesliga ;)
super, thanks vm for sharing.
advanced skill is fixed(do not moved, even a bit!) when holding the racket. That will make you much faster.
technic seems very much with the Jörgen Persson's one
Wrist moving too much.. looks unstable

Making it stiff will make recovery difficult. Whip action is the key.
wth is this William Henzell?
@ChZuli U reckon his technique is ugly?! do u even know who he is, William Henzell, professional table tennis player with one of the best backhands ever!
Win a couple sets off Wang liQin, then I'll believe you
@ChZuli I bet you cant do any better so show some respect!!
@ChZuli and you think your good...huh pafetic....
Must say the video has some dead wrong info., for example, holding racket. You can't hold that loosely(the video says relaxed), because when you turn to forehand, you have no time and your motion will not be complete. Don't play like that especially for the kids. that's not professional at all.

You are completely wrong "Activities With Elva And Will"...William Henzell is an internationally recognized professional held in extremely high regard. Relaxed grip is absolutely crucial to generate racket head speed and therefore spin. Perhaps before commenting further you may wish to google/you tube some of William's performances, for example against Timo Boll or Wang Liqin...
Sorry but that technique looks really bad...
