The tomahawk weapon was, formally, used in a vertical/forward blow. No, this is not a tomahawk serve, and I've seen it as early as the 70's (eg. Dean Doyle, Oregon/Washington). The only top players using a tomahawk serve are Ding Ning and Kenta Matsudaira. Ovtcharov has something closer, but that isn't a tomahawk either.

That is how he does the serve. How I do the tomahawk serve is I stand with my chest facing the table and chop sideways and downwards on the ball, creating sidespin and a little backspin. But that's his variation, standing sideways and brushing the ball way faster and harder, creating much more sidespin, but little to no backspin. There are different variations and my coach teaches the variation that I use today. Note: I am not a pro player. I practice and learn new things in ping pong every week.

Teo Mitchell it's not called a tomahawk serve (what kenta or ding ning do). this is something else but i don't think there's a name for it in eng so far. technically, wang hao was one of the first to use it. it's just that shakehand players haven't used it much until zjk popularized reverse pendulum and not everyone can do it. this is so much easier and one of the most annoying serves for righties to return. my coach is ex 1st string CNT.

The classic defining characteristic of the tomahawk serve is the reason for the near-vertical plane of the racquet around the time of contact: a very deceptive choice between forehand or backhand surface for contact. It's not a semantic quibble: It's: the way the tomahawk weapon was moved, and it's the optimum way to visually deceive the TT opponent
