When you're back from the table you have a few options. If wish to be attacking you can play a topspin against topspin. If wish to be defensive you can play a chop stroke. We have videos on both of these on our website.

@thedoctorthemaster You can do similar things against a fast topspin too. Generally a faster shot will not have as much topspin so you need to vary your stroke to allow for this. Also as the ball is traveling faster you probably don't need to punch the ball as much as you don't need to generate more speed. The counter topspin is also difficult to make because the ball is coming at you faster. So a good option is to use a standard block against a fast topspin.

@salkstap That is difficult to answer. It really depends a lot on your current level. However it does take a long time to learn. Just keep practicing and it will come.

If the ball has a lot of topspin, it can be difficult to chop. And if you are close to the table you can't do this effectively off such a spinny topspin. If you are a defensive player you can certainly chop the ball. We have some lessons on this as well on our website.

Great video Guys! shows three really good options and progressive responses. One thing advanced players my take for granted that could be helpful here would be mentioning how important it is to saying down, not move you head a bunch, or not tensing up or be surprised by the change of pace when receiving this shot. especially for middle lel and beginners. One big reason why slow spiny topspin shots are effective in game play (besides it's heavy spin) is because its a change of pace from a more direct topspin shot. It can break the rhythm of play. Mid lel and beginner myself included really need to stay down and relaxed if the want to have any type of consistency at any of the three options. Pretty basic I know but Still worth mentioning.

OK. To counter the top spin you need to angle your bat forwards. You could try this and attempt to just guide the ball back. Did you take a look on our website at the topspin against topspin video? We film answers to question that have been asked on our website and then voted upon by our premium members. If you'd like you can ask this question on the website and hope that people vote for it.

yes, this is a very good video, so many people at my old club tell me to hold the paddle very firm when blocking or hitting, and it just made matters worse. A soft loose grip i thought was better, and you have just confirmed that. Thank you. A relaxed musscle also moves much quicker then a tense one.

@harry1549 As the long pimples doesn't have much friction, you need to use a different technique using this rubber. Often people try to chop the ball when using long pimples. Try using the Ask the Coach section of our website as we have more room there to answer your questions in detail.

If someone with normal rubber blocks the ball, it will come back with a little bit of topspin on it. If the counter topspin it, it will come back with lots of topspin on it. This means the ball is rotating forwards off your opponents stroke.

Very useful video. I do feel that in a match if the topspin is at the end of table then block should be done passively ie soft hands but if it lands inside the table then should be punched while if heavy topspin trajectory is low then should be counter topspin

Hello from France, i am a very good blocker and i would suggest this for a soft block. Yes the secret is the softness. you can do this with the first part of your arm but i have develloped something easy to do. on a soft block i hold the neck of my paddle only with my thumb and the closest finger and maybe the following. the 2 last fingers are a little opened so they don't really hold the neck. with that technique the grip is very soft, and the block is soft and controlled, thanks regards

Thank you so much for all your videos.... I have improved my techniques over the last one year watching those. One question though, with all the 3 techniques mentioned in this video which would be most effective in blocking/countering the loop which has a lot of acceleration (micro adjusted loop)? One of my friends' loops gets real fast after the bounce making it almost impossible to send it back from close to the table. Please advise...

  • @pingskills

If you are faced with a very fast loop, then I would recommend attempting to simply block the ball back, but try to place it well so the next shot is hard for you opponent.

I don't know if I should thank or curse PingSkills :-) Now I just lineup the table against the wall and hit out all by myself.

Due to the topspin your opponent has put on the ball, you don't need to brush upwards as you would against a backspin ball. You need to angle your bat to counter the spin and while still brushing the ball, swing forward. So think forward rather than lift for this stroke.
