T55 taking advantage of the outstanding tank terrain at The Muckleburgh Collection.
Whatever praise was heaped on the T34, probably even more should go on the T54/55 series.
Design started in 1943, based on a pre-war T34 experimental development and resulted in the T44, which had many novel features. However, its big drawback was a small turret which precluded anything larger than an 85mm gun. With a new turret and a 100mm gun, the tank was accepted as the T54 in mid 1945.
Mechanically, the tank was very interesting. The engine was mounted transversally, and the Russians finally moved from the Christie suspension to a torsion bar system. The engine was a totally new diesel V12 delivering 520 bhp.
The turret was a heavily curved, cast structure, reminiscent of the turret style of the IS heavy tank, and the armour significantly thicker than its T34 predecessor.
From then the T54/55 (the T55 was essentially a much modified T54) has been continually upgraded in virtually all departments, proving the soundness of the initial design. Armour, armament, new fire control systems have all been introduced, with the result that the T55 became a sort of ‘budget’ MBT for armies short of cash. Latterly upgrade packages have even been offered by US manufacturers, such as Textron and General Dynamics.
In a similar way to the Centurion and the M60, the T55 soldiered on and still soldiers on around the world. It has seen extensive active service in the Middle East conflicts, Africa and Asia. It has spawned engineer derivatives also and looks set to continue into the future.

this T55 is how tanks looked like in the soviet union during the 1950s and also used as one of the soviet tanks in 1961 berlin crisis stand off at checkpoint charlie

Yes indeed this type of battletank are still in the active service today, with some other countries around the world, all because of its great durability, reliability and easy handling, that explain why some of them still want to extend the life of this amazing fighting beast.

It’s also a good tank to give away to pretty much any third world country that can’t produce their own tanks. The T-55 is so dangerous but because it’s hard to destroy but because you could get it practically anywhere no matter how portly trained our equipped your army is.

For me the T-55 is the best battletank ever, the peoples weapon of choice, in almost every military forces around the world.
Tank T55 although it is outdated. From 1979 to 1989 we fought with it to great effect. Make the enemy very afraid.

APFSDS fodder on the battlefield. Cool tank with alot of history (and the star in "The Beast" - a great film). The Enigma was the coolest T-55 version. In the top 10 IMHO.

Still used in Peru, 350 tank's t- 55 they can have still have a chance vs the chilean leopard 2a-4 , but we need a ugrade like the Tifon A - 4 design in Perú and made in Ucrane , still no results ,other option is new coreanpanther's, peruvian army must urgent take a desicion, we hope good news in the future.

The invading army considers Tank T55 to be ancient. When holding water, it will be a steel fortress. Tactics in war are very diverse. You guys are not a match for the classic Tank yet.

Leopard 1A1 is shit compared to T-54 or T-55. It's side armour can be pierced by higher-calibre machineguns.T-55 is much more reliable and balanced in all terms.
