T-55 - Tank History and Review

The T-34 was a massive leap forward in Soviet tank design, setting the mold for how Soviet medium tanks would be created for decades to come. The effort to replace the T-34 would eventually result in the T-44 medium tank, which was not quite as groundbreaking as its predecessor. In an effort to produce a better medium tank for Soviet armored forces, the T-54 would emerge as essentially a heavily modified and improved T-44. The T-54 / T-55 would go on to become the most produced tank in history.

There's only so much you can really do. The more modern gear you install inside, the less room the crew has. Keep in mind the crew compartment on these tanks is already extremely cramped. The USSR had a height limit of 5' 6" for their tankers. They were great tanks in their day, but their time has come and gone, especially considering how prevalent RPG's and similar anti tank weapons are. Up armouring them again can only go so far. I say this as a diehard fan of the T-54/55, such a good looking vehicle.

Dude we need the m55, a Slovenian t55 with a 105mm smoothbore, era and thermals. We also need the T55AD, and T55MV, as you can tell i love the t55. The t55AD would be great to be a test bed for active protection as it was the first tank to ever use it and could only protect against slow atgms making it not op in game. The T55MV would be great to add as its basically the T55AM-1 but without the composite armor. It just has gen 1 ERA blocks that only protects against heatfs and atgms giving people another option who don't want to pay for a premium modernised T55. The m55 should be a premium to help pay for the other t55s added to the game. The M55 is a 2000s modernised Slovenian T55 with a 105mm smoothbore L7 cannon, era, laser warning systems and thermals. Its basically a glass cannon that could be added to 8.7 helping russia face against all the damn leos at 9.0. It also wouldn't be hard to add as the Chinese premium at 8.7 the t69 would pretty much be exactly the same

IIRC there were also weird problems with the T-44 and how well, or not well, the hull armor was welded together. I remember seeing this on the WOT forums back in like 2011 or 2012 and I haven't been able to find it since, but someone posted pictures of T-44's used as live fire targets for 122mm guns [either an IS-2 or ISU-122S] and the T-44's looked like they got hit by nuclear bombs. All the welds holding the armor plates together failed and the whole vehicles fell apart like a cartoon car.

You seems to exclude the economic side of tanks. T-34, aside for all its good and bad traits, was extremely cheap and easy to produce. Also, T-44 didn't enter production because of an abundance of T-34s. It wasn't compelling to produce a new, entirely different tank at the end of the war.

Knowing that the M4 Sherman had a hand in the making of the T-54/T-55 is not only super ironic (considering it’s A) an American tank, and B) we used Soviet titanium to make the SR-71 Blackbird), but also kinda cool. It’s nice to know that the Sherman had such an impact on later tank designs, an impact that can still be felt today.

Some might not be obsessed with military aircraft and tank history, but I sure am! I think it’s healthy specifically because it’s allowed me to be such a more aware person of the present, let me explain. Years ago I was extremely up close with the F-117 Nighthawk evolution into the craft it is today which is a air/spacecraft that has no tail or wings, it has a teardrop shaped body and uses electromagneticgravitic propulsion, I’ve also been up close with the triangle shaped anti gravity craft using the same type of propulsion system, you can actually google that one “triangle spacecraft patent” to see more yourself. And that was around 15 years ago now, they’ve been around for awhile, we’ve been lied to for far too long. My grandfather was also a fighter pilot in the Korean War, so I’ve always been following both publicly aerospace technological developments over the years as well as the black world. So I study it all, both the technologies we used back then and even now on the surface of the planet, and also try as much as possible to peer more into the shadowy true world of military technology which is so far past what people think is possible that if people heard what the military has they would think you’re talking science fiction technology. Nope, if you can imagine it from Star Wars or Star Trek they’ve got that tech or even better than what has been portrayed through sci fi films underneath the desert and off planet. That’s a fact, I can promise you.

I like to fantasize that all these cool incremental tanks got used or were developed earlier. I thought the T-43 in WoT was pretty good after the 100mm gun was dropped in favor of the improved 85mm gun. It has good enough soft stats to handle the 85mm well. If they had the resources to just switch production over and start making the T-43, it was an easy Panther equivalent. Imagine if instead of T-34-85s they had started producing T-43s or T-44s instead. Likewise the American T32 was far beefier than the Pershing that eventually came out of the program. It even had a gun more similar to the Super Pershing's very long 90mm instead of the base M3 90mm. We had actually decided to adopt and manufacture the T32 but the shipping weight and logistics to get it overseas ended up being a big issue. So we lopped a set of road wheels off and lightened up the armor. The Pershing, and the subsequent Patton series that followed, were a compromised design. Imagine a T32 based M46 Patton. Suddenly not quite as outclassed by the T-54/55. Likewise the T29 and its many brothers were all built and thoroughly tested. They performed well, had good armor and armament for the time. Not quite a King Tiger equivalent but easily a capable Tiger Hunter. With a solid 105mm they would be a threat to a T-54.

I really appreciate these well-researched videos. I would like to offer my only criticism: please slow down you speech just a little. Sometimes it sounds like you're tripping over your words or pushing them together when they need some space. Your sentences have good pauses between them, but give each word a tiny bit of room to breathe :)

Technically the T-54A is in a fashion. The Type 59 in the Chinese tree is a copy of the T-54A built off of Soviet supplied blueprints. The quality control apparently sucked, though.

The T-55 is basically a tank equivalent of the Kalashnikov rifle. Simple, relatively crude design that may not be the sexiest or the most advanced, but is so cheap and primitive anyone can use it and it can be produced in massive quantities.
