Tank Driving in Finland: Piglet and the T55

Cool Forgotten Weapons merch! shop.forgottenweapons.com
We were going to have a couple serious military vehicles as range props for Finnish Brutality back in February, but with the match postponed because of covid restrictions that didn't come to pass. However, Jari (CEO of Varusteleka) and I were not going to let that stop us from having a bit of fun! So we headed out to Mil-Safarit.com in Pornainen (about 50km northeast of Helsinki) to get some driving lessons.
First up, the "Nasu". That is an abbreviation for Nauha-Sisu, but it also translates as "Piglet" (just like the Winnie the Pooh character) and that's what it is called by troops in service. It's a light tracked utility vehicle with a really neat steering system. The vehicle consists of a front driver's compartment and a rear cargo section, each in an independent set of tracks. A flexible drive shaft connects the two, along with a pair of hydraulic cylinders that bend the two sections side to side. That is how it steers; by being the vehicle in the middle - the tracks are always turning at equal speeds. It's a very effective and reliable vehicle, used to haul pretty much anything, as well as towing trains of infantry on skis.
Jari had experience driving these in the service, but it was a pretty neat new experience for me. The steering definitely took some getting used to, but it will pretty much go anywhere.
Next up was the real star, a Polish T55 (the Finnish military used Soviet T55s for a while). This beast weighs in at about 40 tons, powered by a 39-liter V12 Diesel engine. It has a 5-speed manual transmission, and hydraulic-assisted steering levers. It was intimidating at first (and still at the end, if I am to be honest), but actually not that hard to drive once I squeezed myself into the driver's compartment. And a tremendous amount of fun!
We will have either these vehicles or something comparable at the rescheduled Finnish Brutality: Continuation War match in October 2021. Thanks to Varusteleka for setting this little excursion up, and to Mil-Safarit.com for not sending me straight to the gulag after I drove their tank into a ditch!

It still happened couple times when you are stuck and only one in front and one in back tracks are actually spinning. But for compensation of missing locks Nasu(Piglet) can literally wiggle those wagons around and gain grip unlike typical tracked vehicle. + Those are supposed to be Amphibious but we never tested that.

I belie the articulated vehicle was a Swedish invention with the Volvo Bv 202. In the 1950's Sweden had a big winter exercise in northern Sweden and the conclusion after that exercise was that wheeled transport sucked in the far north in winter. So a cheap vehicle was sought that could operate in the terrain and the all terrain carrier with it's rubber tracks and articulated steering was the answer.

Nasu is essentially a cousin to the Bv202s later development Bv206. Finnish Army bought a few 206s back in the 70s and later in the 80s Sisu Auto was commissioned to make a vehicle like the Bv206, but with some modifications, which led to Nasu.

True. And some 10 years later Hägglund & Söner (now BAE Systems Hägglunds) developed their version the military then called BV 206 and BV 208, which Finland also uses. This one is a completely Finnish design based on that idea. Don't know how it is in other countries but here in Sweden these vehicles are also used for ambulance services, and by electricity companies and such to gain access to remote and inaccessible areas.

awesome, reminded me of my days at Foreign vehicle school while in the military. while all the Army guys were sitting under a shade tree waiting for a turn to drive the T72M tank, I ( the only Marine) yelled at instructor what about all those vehicles inside that fence there. he told me you start you can drive it. I jumped up and ran off inside the fence with my notes from class. I got to drive all over base all the vehicles they had while the Army waited for their turn. I drove T55, T62, T64, Brt 60, Brt80, ZSU23, trucks with rocket launchers on back, a missile launcher rig, i fixed tires and found batteries so that anything i wanted to drive i could start. Come Graduation the Army Unit commander came up and said where is my crazy Marine that drove the ZSU-23 thru Base housing and made everyone think we were being invaded for a week. He thanked me for using all their vehicles for once, they had been sitting for far too long.

The Piglet is so named because the official name for it is Nauha-Sisu, or "Thread Sisu" (Sisu being the manufacturer), abbreviated to Nasu, which is the Finnish name for Piglet. I served with a chief warrant officer who had done vehicle testing for the army before coming to our unit, and he said that a driver of a Nasu runs out of courage before the Nasu runs out of terrain it can cross. It has amazingly low ground pressure, making it an exceptional all-terrain vehicle.

This illustrates how much the season affects the mobility. When it is winter in those areas - the only way forward is the light armoured vehicle: A 40 ton tank will slew through the lack of tracktion. Due to the mulititude of trees and ditches it is more than a little difficult to get through narrow forrest paths. The lighter weight of the SIsu makes meandering in the snow - in frost conditions manageable. It does not have the protection tanks have - but then again: Tanks won't get you that far. I have for a long, long time been an avid proponent of having a double set of vehicles for the light troops: One set on wheeled vehicles and another on tracks. I am also a proponent of keeping some of the older tanks for some roles.

It is possible. My grandparents where around 10 years old when the war started, so they would have entered military service around 1960, when Finland started replacing T-34's with T-54's and T-55's. But it would be more likely that my parents generation, would have driven T-55, since they where in service up until 90's. My parents are grandparents, so ye... It's possible. During my service in 2000, those T-55's where retired. I think I saw 2 in simwars, but it was probably the same one. We where using T-72's, witch got replaced by Leobards, BMP-2's witch got replaced by CV90's and BMP-1's witch got replaced by BMP-2's. So I guess tourists will be driving T-72's and BMP-1's next.

Women's service started in late 1990s, so perhaps someone's granny did drive one. The Army scrapped most the T-72s, refusing to sell to private companies or individuals. This might have been because they are full of asbestos. The tank museum in Parola got some of course.

Brought back some memories Ian...I served in the Rhodesian Army as a crewman on the 8 T55's we received from South Africa in 1979 - only difference was we didn't get snow very often in that country! 😊

That quote "Death is knocking." is from finnish NCO Einar Schadewitz in wintern war. Story goes that he stood on a tank banging turret with hand grenade and shouting "Avvoo Iivana kuolema kolkuttaa!" (open it up Ivan. Death is knocking!) and then blow that think up. He was one of those forgotten heroes of finnish wars and a veteran of that unit where i get my basic traning.

The Finns bought their T-55s and T-72s from the Soviets. The relationship between Finland and the USSR wasn’t as antagonistic (after WW2) as a lot of people think.

Nice. I drive one of their T55:s a few years ago, maybe even the same one. We also drowe a Swedish Bandwagen which is very similar to Nasu. The tank drive pretty much like an old caterpillar and the Bandwagen was very similar to an articulated dump truck so kind of familiar for me as I've been driving earth moving equipment for a living In the past.
