Katie does have hearing loss of her own. Katie was diagnosed with Ménière's disease, a degenerative inner ear disorder, the symptoms of which include fluctuating hearing loss and vertigo. She grew up without any knowledge of her disease, and is therefore able to use speech as any hearing person would. She DOES use an accent to emphasize her character's hearing loss.

American Sign Language is not and never will be "English." It has a completely different grammar and syntax, and it doesn't even have a properly representative writing system. Anyone who says that it's any form of English can stand to be properly educated. Now, PSE (Pidgin Signed English) or any form of Manually Coded English is a different matter. Often, on the show "Switched at Birth," people talk as they sign, which is a sure indication that they are using a more English grammar and not "pure" ASL grammar. It is just about impossible in reality to sign ASL and speak English simultaneously while being true to both languages. And now I can get off my soapbox for now.

Lucas... you were doing so well until you said ASL is English. Noooooo! I am sure Sean and Marlee will be happy to explain why it is a totally different language. :) But that being said, I am glad that the cast and crew at SaB are learning ASL. I wish we had more programs that featured sign, and that did it as well as SaB. I like that the sign language is not forced - it is a natural part of the story line and the signed and spoken lines of each character is as one would expect in real life.

I understand what you mean... But what they are learning is English words symbolized (if you get what I'm going at) with your hands. It is another language, just in different circumstances with how its done. Since you speak through your hands and not your voice.
@julia04736
9 жыл бұрын
Taylor Moore I know that I am a bit late, but I still want to clear this up. ASL is not just "English words symbolized"; that is SEE or Signed Exact English. ASL is a fully independent language, with its own syntax and vocabulary. For example ASL does not use words like "is", "be", and "are". Instead those concepts are conveyed using facial expression (i.e., you would just sign "I STUDENT I" while nodding your head to mean "I am a student."). Furthermore the signs don't resemble exact English words. For example the sign for "favorite" can also mean "prefer" as far as I know. It also uses some concepts like directionality, that are specific to sign language and can not be used in phonetic language. Directionality means, that the direction in which you do a sign can determine the subject and the object without the need to actually sign them. So you can sign the sign GIVE starting near your body and ending near the body of your conversation partner to mean "I give you".
@andrew4635
3 жыл бұрын
@Julia Path @Taylor Moore I know I’m even later, but I wanted to second Julia’s words and add that ASL as its own, fully-formed language. For multilingual folks, I’m sure you’ve come across situations where a turn of phrase or idiom in one language really doesn’t translate into the other. An example I can think of from childhood is my parent telling me in French, “Mettre les bas dans les pieds” (though in a more slang-y way that is hard to reproduce here). A super direct translation to English would be, “Put the socks in the feet” or “Put your socks in your feet” which doesn’t make any sense. It means, “put your socks on.” Now that I think of it, I’m not sure if this counts as an idiom or not. All that to say: ASL has idioms as well, that don’t translate into spoken language and can’t (and shouldn’t) be boiled down to mean “English-on-the-hands.” [Edited for clarity]

Thank you I was about to comment this! The grammar is completely different in a lot of ways. And signs that don't translate directly like "kissfist" etc. However it's kind of ironic because most of the time they don't use the correct grammar on Switched at Birth, it's more like PSE. (Some deaf people do sign like that though so I guess it's okay...?) ~:~

I'm taking sign language classes at my high school and completely forgot about this show, which revolves around sign language! I just started watching it and I am in love with it! I can actually understand some of the signs and it's pretty cool!
Some deaf people I know adopt a "hearing" voice for social situations, so I was wondering if Katie did the same thing - after research, I now realize this is her natural voice! :)
This is a great storyline and its cast is amazing. I love how it brings light to the deaf culture and its beautiful language. I hope they continue this show and maybe make new ones.
their story is so moving especially that they all want to learn sign language. its not like they are saying " ok done. I don't have to use ASL anymore" and also Katie and sean seem to work really hard to do the show. I think they are all great people. they are definite rolemodles
I miss this series. I wish it would come back.
Oh my gosh it's so crazy to hear Katie's voice and not her Deaf voice. I know she's hard of hearing but man she is amazing!
This show is what started me to help to learn sign language that was almost a year ago and one of my teachers gave up her prep to teach sign language and I signed up right away

Sean is hella fast at signing HOLYYYYY!!!!!!!
My daughter learned ASL for her best friend after learning he was deaf when she was 5. Now at 12, she's completely fluent and lightening fast. 😊
I agree, most people don't see ASL as a language, but it really is. I honestly have to say its the most beautiful language, & I'm taking classes to learn it. Its really fun!

She’s amazing and such an inspiration
I've noticed a lot of comments about ASL verses ESL. Let me just clear something up as a ten plus year signer. When the hearing cast are signing, they are using American Sign Language signs, but speaking and signing English sentence structure, which is also known as English Sign Language or SimCom=Simultaneous Communication, which is a combination between ASL and English. When the deaf cast are talking, they use ASL. All of the deaf cast members sign in ASL, regardless of who else is in their scene. Especially as the show has progressed. No ASL and English (ESL) are not the same. But both methods are used in the show.

It is more like a gray area for the hearing and deaf actors. The hearing are able to learn quickly and communicate with the deaf actors, and the deaf are able to understand what is being said to them. I am a 2+yr signer, and though I don't like ESL in the show, it is still a good story and everyone is on board with everything. Good job ABCfamily!
Shocked me too! ASL is most definitely a completely different language. But...baby steps I guess. Teach them to sign English, and then slowly introduce them to the grammar when they've got a stronger grasp on the vocabulary.
I love this show!!
Me and my family started watching this (soon after stopping because the fighting and drama was getting on our last nerves and putting us in bad moods like they always were) but the sign language was really interesting and made me want to learn.☺😊
I miss 2000 tv shows
I know some sign language. My son who's nearly nonverbal uses it to talk. He's on the autism spectrum so he doesn't speak much and has articulating issues. I came up with the idea of signing because I wanted to communicate and thought it would help. He's so smart now!!
Holy crap I miss this show. I wish another would come on like it. They covered so many important topics and now with where the internet is at with more people putting text of what they’re saying.. it would be a great time. Freeform where you at!!???
I LOVE THIS SHOW!!! I'm going to start taking ASL classes because of this show!!!
I'm an NZSL student, but I've also studied German, Spanish, and Japanese. I found NZSL was easy to learn because I already had the English concepts to "add" the signs to so it was like adding something extra to something I already knew, then as my NZSL studies got deeper it was easier to learn signed concepts that were foreign to my spoken English. Whereas learning a new verbal language you're learning entirely new concepts to replace ones you've known your whole life.
Omg I loved this show!!
i love this show and i love learning sigh language .
I love that they use at least ONE deaf actor (Sean Berdy aka Emmett)

5th time watching the series. I can’t get enough!!
I use sign language to talk with my friends during class, but the only problem is I had to teach them sign language
i love signing and i think it is so cool.
It's really interesting how after my sister and I watch the show, we already know some sign language, we start signing to each other what we're saying without even thinking about it! And you do just pick up on their signing, even words we didn't know before. I think it's a great way to learn because you get to watch an awsome show and learn a new language at the same time.
i just finished the series like two mins ago i swear. I totally forgot about the signing thing and actually learned a bit while watching!
I love watching this show so fun love Emmet and bay together :)

I'm an 11yr old trying to learn BSL (I'm from England) and the way I learn is to learn my favourite songs lyrics and how to sign the words from them and use them when I'm speaking (so in a song if it says 'I am' or something I can sign it when I'm speaking normally, I don't just go round signing songs lol). I don't even know anyone who is deaf I just feel like it's a handy skill to have.
I have really LOVED the show ever since it first started. Sometimes I think and really wish hard that I could meet the cast just for a day or maybe 2 days. I know sign language so I could probably be able to talk in sign with them but I would also need an interpreter because I am vision impaired and it's hard to follow along to what they sign back to me.

To be honest, I first started to watch their show few weeks ago and I thought it was interesting. But I did not know that Sean was deaf. Nor did Katie had Meniere's Disease. I thought they were all hearing. I find this very cool! :)
While that's true, a lot of the actors who play hearing characters are actually using Signed English on the show, meaning (for those who don't know) that they sign the words they are saying as they are saying them, regardless of ASL's grammar. For some of them, it is just like English. And they're learning. That's the important part.

@ericas46 They use both ASL and Pidgin signed English. I've seen Sean Berdy use a lot of ASL in his scenes and then the other characters are more toward PSE/Contact signing on the continuum from ASL to signed English. I haven't seen anyone actually using SEE 1 or SEE 2 as those have added signs that aren't in ASL and some are completely different (CAR+PET=carpet while in ASL that would mean you had a pet car or you were petting your car).
